Topic: What Nintendo IPs would you want to see in a new genre?

As far as I know, Mario has gone from 2D platforming to 3D platforming and RPG'ing. I don't remember the reactions to those, besides being positive and excited? When Metroid moved from 2D platforming to FPS/platform/action, I believe the reactions were more reluctant and seemed to be considered a huge step/change in the franchise, if memory serves me right. And it is clear that this change paid off. Also, there was the rumored Action RPG version of Star Fox by Retro, right? Which appears to not be the case anymore as Retro is working on a new DKC and basically implied they are pretty much only doing DK stuff at the moment.

Nintendo pretty much as all genres covered, from the obvious platforming to sports to tactics games and so forth. But it seems most franchises seemed to be pigeonholed to a certain genre. DK is platforming, Star Fox is space combat, Zelda is adventure-RPG, Wario is microgames, etc. And even the different IPs can go cross-genre in games like SSB and Mario Kart.

But I ask others, which of the Nintendo franchises would you like to see expand, even change, their genre? Would a 3D Donkey Kong be desirable for anyone? Or a turn-based Star Fox RPG? How about a Zelda puzzle game? Or a Pikmin 2D platformer?

Any 2 cents are appreciated!

I think there could be a lot done with wario , either a RPG (anyone else picture wario like a mob boss?) or a stealth action game where he steals money sorta like thief.

I think Zelda would work well as an RPG...except I hate RPGs so I wouldn't buy it
Another interesting idea would be playing a Mario game as an antagonist rather than a protagonist. Wouldn't exactly be a new IP but that would be cool.

-A 3D Donkey Kong (DK64 revival) would be quite excellent.
-I think Ice Climber in the same vein is deserving of a revival after their appearance in Smash.
-I'd like to see a Wii U Extreme Sports collection of their sports franchises - Wave Race, 1080 Snowboarding, Excitebike, Pilotwings, maybe something new.
-As an ADD-ON multiplayer mode to a FPS Metroid, a fleshed-out multiplayer experience in the same chaotic vein of Kid Icarus: Uprising, with the same "hardcore shooter fan" flavor of Mass Effect/Call of Duty.
-An complex F-Zero racing RPG.
-A sandbox Pokemon game (a la Minecraft).

-Free to Play Custom Robo. Not really a genre change per say but I could see it making alot of money.
-Another Metroid Arena shooter like Hunters would be awesome.
-A gritty Duck Hunt FPS about surviving in the woods with only your gun and a faithful companion.
-A zelda MMO or Monster Hunter style game.
-A animal crossing Grand theft auto like game where you do odd jobs to erase your debt from the Local town Gangster Tom Nook.

Kirby RPG because why not

love that idea. Guess it would only be the right thing to do to have HAL develop it, though I'd love to see AlphaDream (the Mario & Luigi devs) attempt it.

I totally forgot DK already had a 3D game! I feel ashamed - he's one of my favorite Nintendo franchises! >_<

I'd dig all of those. I was thinking of a grand-scale TBS Pikmin...

Earthbound turned into an action RPG for the Wii U. Instead of turn based battles, it would play more like a 3D Zelda game, but with a bigger focus on magic attacks.

Fire Emblem turned into a fighting game on the Wii U. It could still have the overhead, turn based strategy, but when you attack another player it goes into a fighting game style instead of turn based.

A Zelda game where you play as Zelda and it plays like a 3D Zelda game, but with bigger focus on puzzles and magical attacks.

A spin-off of the Metroid series that is a first person shooter for the Wii U. The game would mainly focus on a battle between the galactic federation soldiers and the space pirates. Samus is busy rescuing, or destroying, another planet somewhere else in the universe.

A pikmin game that plays like Lemmings for the 3DS.

A Nintendo RTS. No, really.

Imagine building and upgrading Nintendo units that fight online together. Mario has an army of fighting mushrooms, stars and toadlings. Bowser has an army of koopas, goombas and piranha plants. Mario's units can upgrade to water canons for range or flying for increased movement. Bowser's units can be upgraded to have better armor (turtle shells) and shooting lava. You could borrown from turn-based strategy and allow different bonuses for certain terrain (pipes, sand, water, etc.) Further, you could allow for hero moves (every 10 turns or so) that allows the army leader (Mario, Link, whoever) to provide some kind of special ability that effects all friendly units, ie - star power (invincible for one turn) or ocarina of power (increased strength for one turn).

Other armies could be introduced later from every corner of the Nintendo universe - Pikmin, Zelda, Metroid, et al. each with their own respective advantages and disadvantages. Overall it would be trimmed down from traditional PC RTS in the interest of keeping a smooth, console experience. Honestly, in appearance it could be a kind of elaborate chess board that players can customize (think Settlers of Catan, for example) so each game is fresh and replayability is high. In fact, I think it's the sort of game that might need to be an online excusive.

I love this idea. Maybe because I'm partial towards RTS games, but this is one of the better ideas I've ever heard.

Make this happen Nintendo.

I think a 3D platformer Kirby game would work fantastically. Everyone praises franchises transitions to 3D (Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, and Metroid Prime) well why not do it again? take a franchise that is stuck in 2D and make a revolutionary new game. Also I would love any sort of Pikmin spinoff. Perhaps a First Person game? It would be pretty creepy 0_0

I'd love to see:

  • Samus, Falcon etc.. in Mario Kart (kinda like Smash Bros)
  • Nintendo RTS (like someone else mentioned)
  • Nintendo MOBA game (like DOTA2 or Leage of Legends) I think this would work wonderfully
  • Fat Princess-style game (if you don't know Fat Princess, look it up, would be a perfect fit)
  • Samus Aran / Cpt. Falcon COOP Third Person Shooter Bounty Hunter Game (anyone remember Star Wars Bounty Hunter?)
  • Nintendo MMO - which would basicly be a HUGE Animal Crossing in a persistent world, people gather to do adventure and enter random generated dungeons that would play out as Mario platforming stages with a bossfight at the and and loot to collect

That's it at the top of my head.

AND Nintendo really needs ONE or TWO really mature, gritty franchises no matter what genre. Just think "The Last of Us".

since Nintendo seems to be averse to making gritty/mature games, I've theorized in the past that they should just buy-out an indie developer to bring a mature franchise to Nintendo. Preferably a Western indie dev, to diversify and perhaps increase Western purchases.

Retro is still kind of taking orders from the Japanese offices, right? But if Nintendo were to buy out say Insomniac, CD Projekt Red, or Obsidian, they could just say "ok, do whatever you want to do. ...just do it for the Wii U and 3DS (and PC if you want)!" Kind of like Sega does with Creative Assembly and will for Relic.

An RTS Fire Emblem. Think Age of Empires only FE themed.

Really like @Fingeldor's idea too, which also encompasses my idea as well.

Kirby is an obvious candidate here. RPG and 3d-platformer have both been mentioned already, and I have envisioned a sort of hybrid years ago. Seriously, think The Great Cave Offensive meets Milkyway Wishes on steroids in a 3 dimensional space. The copy abilities are perfectly suited to a leveling up or modification system. Plus, Dreamland and its inhabitants could make for a really zany and varied world to explore! In my head...this comes off sort of like Mega Man 64 (legends).
