Nintendo rarely disappoints me and I really like thier style of gaming. Heck, E3 2014 was just another example why I enjoy Nintendo so much. The Wii U is a pretty cool console with flaws and that's fine.
Nintendo won E3.

I knew I was going to get the system sooner or later because I like Nintendo consoles, so there was no doubt in my mind I would have become a WiiU owner sooner or later. If I had to name one game that really closed the deal and made me get the WiiU sooner rather than later, it was Pikmin 3.
Top-10 games I played in 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - Rogue Legacy (PS3) - Fallout 3 (PS3) - Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Guns of Boom (MP) - Sky Force Reloaded (MP) - ...

Mario Kart 8 - I'd been planning on buying one for a while, because I knew we'd be getting some awesome titles throughout 2014/15, but as soon as I played Mario Kart 8, I just had to get one, simple as.
I suspect that I would have bought the wiiu no matter what. However the e3 presentation of Nintendo Land made it a day one purchase for me. I adore the gamepad and hope to see greater asymmetrical gameplay usage in the future.

I bought it during some crazy sale on.. tiger direct was it? Anyway it was back in February, the Limited edition Wind Waker version and came with Wonderful 101 and Ninja Gaiden 3 RE all for $279.99. Otherwise I probably would have waited for a little while longer because I really only wanted one to play MH3U online. Most of the games I've played on the system are excellent, but it is still dry in the FPS and fighting genre and while there are quality titles in most other genres it surely has some catching up to do. That said, Wonderful 101 is beautiful, albeit some enemy/fight design has me irked, it deserved/deserves FAR more attention than it got and the Wii U's library has filled some gaps. There is still much to do to make this console a worthy addition to the Nintendo family, but is slowly amassing a library that any console would envy. Got side tracked but yeah that's why I bought a Wii U.

That is an insane deal! While I'm glad to be a day one buyer the best deal I got was buy one get one 40% off the black Friday that the wiiu launched. So I had a respectable library.

EB Games was having some sort of blow out sale on the Basic model, so I bought it with Pikmin 3 and NSMBU and then got a decent USB.
I mainly wanted it for Wind Waker HD, since it's my favourite Zelda.
Normally I always buy Nintendo consoles at launch (since the GameCube), I nearly gave Wii U a miss at launch since the line up looked so poor and the gamepad idea wasn't exactly selling me (still isn't). In the end NSMBU started to look a lot better once they got closer to launch so I took the plunge (same thing with SM3DW, look mediocre at first then as we got closer to release looked better and better as more details were released). Still think it was a massive mistake not to launch without a proper 3D Mario or Zelda. They should have not released Zelda Skyward Sword for the Wii and held it back for the Wii U launch IMO, would have helped them no end and not really hurt the Wii since it was past it's prime by the time SS launch (wasn't much of a system seller by that point).

The third party releases were actually pretty good in the first nine months, with very little being good from Nintendo. I, too, was disappointed in NSMBU- but as you mentioned, it grew on me. I hadn't bought a home Nintendo console since the SNES, so I thought that NSMBU was going to be more like SM3DW.
The biggest problems with the Wii U aren't with the machine itself, but the lack of marketing and lack of quality first party games, tho I think that NintendoLand was pretty good. It was launched in Nov., then it wasn't until August/Sept. that Rayman, Pikmin and W101 were released. I got mine in April but almost didn't get it bc I was disappointed in the available titles- ended up getting it on impulse. By then, it had a decent slate of games- enough to keep me busy through the summer, but it wasn't until SM3dw, DKTF that I felt it was good enough to start recommending to friends- and then MK8/E3 were what put it over the edge as a "must have."
Generally I'm very, very happy with the purchase in terms of the games available- lots of quality and have an ROI on it that will keep on returning hours of entertainment. But the fact that I can't get the bigger multi-plats caused me to buy an XBone. Wouldn't have considered this if they had even a modest selection of 3rd party games.
I brought mine just after launch because the gamesstore man said (1) Nintendo will be full of kid friendly games and (2) it will have lots of/all of the multiplats.
Well, I lucked out on one, but put in about 40 hours with SM3DW on my own and have introduced my little fella to it now, so I got lucky with the other point.
As much as I do enjoy it though, if I can find a way to divert the cash from my wives knowledge, I'd be going to pick up a white PS4 ( for games like Far Cry 4, Metro Redux etc) and a "New" 3DS XL ( for FE - Awkening) as I am in NZ - Huzzah!
Wanted a next gen console. I looked at Wii U games, the ones that intrested me were Super Mario 3D World, Wind Waker HD, Wonderful 101, Mario Kart 8, and Smash Bros. Then I looked at PS4 gsmes, the only ones that intrested me were KH3 and FFXV, so I went with Wii U.
I wanted to play SM3DW and Pikmin 3 but what really pushed me over the edge was the first trailer for Xenoblade Chronicles X (Back when it was just "X") That showcased the world and the mechs! I've had my Wii U for about 7 months now and I haven't regretted it once!
