Topic: What made you buy a WiiU?

For my it was Aliens: Colonial Marines (I know how bad that sounds) because I saw that the controller would be used as a motion tracker, and it just seemed like the most amazing thing ever. So I got a WiiU and the game the day it came out, needless to say the game sucked but the wiiU is now my 3rd favorite Nintendo System.

Because their September conference before release showed off an impressive amount of support, particularly Bayonetta 2.

So yes, I also bought it for reasons that are kinda sad right now! XD

But while that does genuinely bother me a lot with how much that didn't reflect where the console was going, I don't have regrets on not choosing something else at least.

Nintendo rarely disappoints me and I really like thier style of gaming. Heck, E3 2014 was just another example why I enjoy Nintendo so much. The Wii U is a pretty cool console with flaws and that's fine.

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

I bought it for Zelda, the third party support that never came and finally how aliens colonial marines was looking for the system. The third party support never happened so i felt sad for that.Aliens colonial marines was looking amazing on the system, but like many people saw when they played the full game those trailers, demos and screenshots were all lies. That killed me cause the game for me was the game of the year, boy was i wrong. Now finally Zelda i wanted to see how Zelda would look in HD i was not discouraged ,but i still love the system even with it's flaws and the no third party support so i have no regret on buying it.

The September 2012 Nintendo Direct was what got me to pre-order it. I think the thing that pushed me over the line was the price because before then retailers had placeholder prices that were up at almost $600AU. Then they said it would be closer to $400AU and with a copy of Nintendo Land. I don't remember what game got me, I think the main game that had me interested was Rayman Legends. I was playing through Rayman Origins and was sold on the idea of being able to play the sequel off-TV. At the time it was going to be a launch title and a Wii U exclusive, very quickly that was lost. So I guess my reasons for getting it were pretty thin.

That said, the point at which I knew I was going to be happy with it was one video review.

By the end of it I was thinking "ok, I get it now. Good thing they already had me suckered in". Then soon after I got it home I had my family over and we played Mario Chase. Before then I was thinking they missed the mark a bit. Everything was starting to fall apart for the Wii U. After it? I realised this was the closest to that "Wii Sports" moment I'd had since 2006. So I guess in a way I wasn't convinced that the Wii U was a good idea until after I had it.

Primarily, to enjoy subsequent entries in 2D/3D Mario platformers, Mario Kart, and Zelda. I also had Fatal Frame and Metroid in mind, but wisely wasn't too optimistic about either.

Also, moving my substantial Wii DLC collection to a younger piece of hardware and Wii U's upscaling (And automatic pillarboxing of 4:3 Wii games) were significant factors in my purchase a year ago.

I will say I almost certainly would've got it by the end of last year regardless, it's just that conference that made me super excited and convinced me to trust Nintendo again. Which again, partially backfired. Unless I'm 100% certain of things, I am probably never getting a console anywhere near launch again though, it's clearly not a good idea anymore.

Ehh... Colonial Marines was cancelled for Wii U. Am I missing something?

Anyway, I pre-ordered it around September 2012 because Nintendo has never had a system in its entire history as a hardware company with bad (or even mediocre) exclusives. Now I have 16 retail games for it, 19 by the end of the year, and 11 of those 19 are exclusive. All of them are fantastic. The PS4 and XB1 combined probably won't have 11 great exclusives this entire gen.

That and backwards compatibility with the Wii made it a very easy decision.

Cuz I end up buying all Nintendo's crap.

  • I bought Wii very late and didn't like that console (although it had some great games)
  • The Wii U was backwards compatible with Wii
  • The Wii U was something else than my gaming PC
  • Rayman Legends as an exclusive release title (little did I know about the future of that game)
  • Lego City: Undercover as a promised exclusive

Lego City: Undercover and Pikmin 3 were the games that confirmed the Wii U as a brilliant gameplay concept to me. Today, I'm very curious about the "3rd generation" of Wii U indies, which IMO is where we'll see much of the innovation.

Bayonetta 2 - I wanted it so bad I nearly rushed to get it... and then it was pushed, so I though "ok, I'll wait". Then in July, my gf comes in, says "happy birthday" and gives me a box. I open it and surprise, it's the Wii U deluxe with Zombie U and pro controller. What is funny is that she knew I liked the first Bayonetta and she really like it too (and facepalmed with every comment saying it's oversexualized etc), so what did she do? She pre-ordered Bayonetta 2 + 1 and that's only because CE was sold out. Only few more days and finally my demons will be put to rest.

So yeah, from Bayonetta 2 to end up with gf buying it.
