Topic: What is Retro Studios REALLY up to?

Retro probably only was working on Tropical Freeze, and I doubt that Metroid will be released until at least Christmas 2015. Until then people will believe it's happening sooner and get mad when Nintendo doesn't do it. Kind of sad.

My bet, if it's not Metroid, it's Miyamoto's new IP and it's an FPS. I don't really care what game Retro comes out with next. They've proven time after time that they release quality games. They could probably release an Ice Climbers Wii U and it would be worth playing.

a new ice climbers might actually be kind of cool. imagine if it was like uncharted or something

Ice Climbers... like Uncharted... My world will never again be the same, just picturing that.

When they said they'd love to come back to Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, or Metroid, that seemed to imply they are not currently working on any of those, meaning they are working on something new / different... unless they are just messing with me. Anyway, I hope that is a good interpretation. I'd like to see them continue expanding their horizons.

If Retro isn't working on the next Metroid, I would like another developer to be working on the game.

I hope it's something different. A New IP would be great, they've never actually done something completely their own before. But they can do whatever they want, they're Retro Studios after all.

We love working with Donkey Kong. It's a great character. It's a lot of fun. We love working with Metroid Prime, with Mario Kart; those are fun, fun games to work on. So, you know, you can't lose. Every one of those IPs have been a lot of fun to play with and work on and [we'd] love to come back to them sometime.

Not sure if that means they're working on something entirely different or not.

Well, it's not Miamoto's new IP, since he's been working on that for a while and it says they just started a new project a few months ago. My guess, it's Metroid. I was happy to see DKC Tropical Freeze- it's only my favorite game series EVER! But, because of the backlash of the media and small circle of Metroid fanatics, and the fact Prime was received so well as opposed to Other M, I think Nintendo has handed off the Metroid franchise back to Retro Studios.

Now, keep in mind people, that Retro has stated time and again they don't have enough people to work on 2 full games at once. One game at a time kind of studio, with enough left over to pitch in on a side game here and there (like DKC Returns 3D and Mario Kart 7). With that in mind, and the current cycle time for games developed by the studio, we will not see their new game until holiday season 2016. Yep, that's right people- 3 years. That's just how it goes. That'll be 4 years into the Wii U's lifespan, which SHOULD be it's prime year. So good timing for whatever game this is. But again, I do believe it's Metroid. And with that said, it's evident we'll only be getting ONE Metroid on Wii U. As for 3DS, we may not get one at all. I hope we do, but just prepare yourselves in case it doesn't happen.

Wouldn't that make it the first Nintendo handheld without a Metroid game?

To be honest, with the pattern of Retro's work, I honestly think they're reviving another series.

Think about it: Retro revives Metroid with the Prime series (awesomeness); Retro revives the DKC series (more awesomeness); Retro revives [insert Wii U revival of an older series].

I don't think the GameBoy Color had a Metroid game. Metroid 2 was GameBoy then Metroid Fuzion qas GameBoy Advance.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Mario Kart 7 wasn't a revival.

They made all of Mario Kart 7? I thought they just contributed to some of it's development.

A new Popeye would be amazing. (If they did what Rare did for Donkey Kong in an interesting way).

I think Retro Studios is working on a new Metroid game. Maybe this time it will be third person (while optionally being able to go into first person mode). They could sort of mix Metroid Prime with Other M and use the targeting mechanism for third person. While in first person, you would move slow, and when is third, you'd move quicky. So, you would have the best of both worlds there.

That's what I think they're doing, but if they're not making Metroid, then I don't know. Retro Studios, even by its name, seems to be about revival retro Nintendo series. So, any of Nintendo's dead franchises would be doable. Maybe Starfox could be their next revival. I'm not the biggest fan of Platinum, but I can see how Starfox would definitely match their style of games.

Retro was only called in late during development of MK7 to help. They contributed miscellaneous stuff and I think were responsible for the excellent DKCR-themed track.
