Topic: What is Retro Studios REALLY up to?

Having just posted my video review of DKC:TF, something crossed my mind...

I sat through the credits, and watched them roll in their entirety. This game had a rather small staff. With Retro Studios being rumored to be closer to 100 employees, I can't help but think that this game was done with a smaller team, while the rest of the employees were either helping Nintendo with other projects, or are, in fact, developing another game silently. Anyone else who watched the credits is welcome to chime in!

I haven't played the game yet, so I haven't seen the credits..... but didn't Miyamoto say that they're a "high priority" to work on the next Metroid game?
They moved to a larger facility and they were hiring a few people last year. Maybe they've split into two teams?

The Metroid Prime Trilogy development team was also small, if that has any relevance.

They are actually planning your surprise birthday party. I decided to ruin the surprise so they would start working on a new Metroid game.

I'm curious as to what their next game will be. Because it could be anyone's guess at this point for we've been told that:

Nintendo is considering them for the next Metroid
Miyamoto would like them to make a Zelda game one day
They might work on a project lead by Miyamoto himself
They're interested in making a 3D Donkey Kong
They've stated that they had a lot of ideas for Tropical Freeze that didn't make the cut and hope to use in the future

There's no denying DKC:TF wasn't their full force. However, it's also possible, as I said above, that the rest of the team was assisting Nintendo and other first party development teams on other games, rather than making a game on their own.

As for it being the next Metroid, hmmmmmmmmmmmmm... I dunno, it would be hard to really do anything they didn't already pull off (and impressively so) in the Metroid Prime series. Also, those games had small teams because Retro was smaller back then.

Don't forget Reggie at VGX. It could very well just be a tease, but I'll just throw it out there.

I WOULD be worried about them doing a Metroid, as it would be going up against several other FPS games coming out this year, but then again, it IS "Metroid"... lol

You do know that not all Metroid games are FPS's and that Prime was a spin-off series and not a part of the main series right?

Maybe after their help on MK7 they were pulled in for 8, too? I'd really like to see them work on something different or something brand new... but I would accept a new Metroid since the last one was supposed to hint at one of the Hunters' characters playing an important role in the sequel, which I would enjoy (even though the red sniper guy was the coolest, obviously).

I never said all Metroid games were FPSes... o_O I'm saying it's clear people have the expectation for it to be, and it would be a bad idea against the current market...

Metroid also never really had a "storyline" (like Zelda), but they tried to make one out of it. Other M was an attempt to reel it back in, but Prime shouldn't be considered a "spinoff", considering the name "Prime" was meant to make it a prequel to all of the other Metroid games moreso than a "spinoff"

Possibly, Mario Kart 8 DOES look absolutely fantastic (aside from some obvious polygon edges, of which SM3DW didn't have), and Retro is known for their ability to push systems graphically.

Also, from the responses so far, this reminds me of the "sting" I could sense in some reviews of DKC:TF where it was clear the reviewer really wanted a Metroid game from Retro, and since DKC:TF wasn't what they wanted, the lowered the score, heh :/

That's disappointing. I haven't looked over the reviews yet but need to. I prefer their work on DKC, but I didn't feel it needed a sequel so soon, either. I'm sure I'll play it eventually, if not in the near future, regardless.

There are always a lot of FPS games coming out, this isn't anything new. What matters is which ones stand out as being unique and Metroid Prime does stand out. Plus it'd actually be a game along the lines of an FPS on the Wii U that's both good and not on any other system. Something which is surely a positive. Whether or not it would actually make anywhere near as much of an impact as some assume it would I don't know. I doubt it.

As for the thread well... wasn't this already a known thing? The very, very obvious thing everyone knew about but weren't allowed to ask? Kinda like how we weren't supposed to know that they were working on anything pre-DKCTF.

It seemed only partially accepted, most people assumed DKC:TF was their current project, as did I. But now that I've seen the credits roll, this perception has changed, lol
