Smash is the better game, generally speaking quality wise and in its comprehensive design, but then again, it's probably better than most other games in existence, so it's not a fair comparison.
they aren't the same type of fighting game. so much harder to compare. Smash is a semi competitive brawler while MK is a more traditional one on one fighting game. you are comparing apples to oranges...they are both fruit but that is about it.

Just as everyone's already said...the two games aren't even the same kind of fighting game, so comparing them becomes a matter of preference as opposed to an actual side-by-side "Which is better?"
Personally, I like the Mortal Kombat style as well as the Smash Bros. style...I'm just terrible at Mortal Kombat. Can't pull off any of the fatalities to save my life...and I just hit buttons more often.
I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.
I used to own a GBC, PS2, and DS Lite

When did people start calling it a brawler? Usually you say that and I think of beat 'em-ups like Streets of Rage and such.
I get that you do not have to compare them and they are very different.....
ok, then let's just make this about which game you like better and what are the pros and cons of both.
I will say that MK:X has probably the best story modes in a fighting game and I think they did a great job with character development (multiple intros for every character). I love the game a lot but one thing I dislike is that it feels a little clunky and not as smooth as maybe Street Fighter games or Smash Bros. The online lag can really ruin a match, and I know that Smash has lag/delay issues but they are much easier to adapt to and the timing isn't as unforgiving since it's not a game that is so combo-based.
MK:X has a better online network and content though; SSB4 is very bare bones on their online mode (no voice chat, no lobbies, no rankings) which is disappointing because it could be an even better game than it already is if they had some of those things.
I will say that I think SSB4 is the better game because it has very technical 1on1 competition and also multiplayer casual fun.
Smash and Mortal Kombat are actually my two favorite fighting game franchises. If I were to choose one though, it'd be Smash Bros. The vast amount of characters, stages and replay factor makes it my #1 favorite.
Also forgot to mention, SSB4 has probably the best soundtrack of any fighting game I've played while MK:X has a very underwhelming one. The only stage I really like the music is the Outworld Marketplace. Most of the stages music is so generic and they all sound kind of similar.
definitely smash bros the mk series haven't had anything good since mk trilogy
I think you're wrong. MK:X is the best MK game in my opinion. They really went all out here, and MK: Trilogy was not even next in line. MK II was probably the best overall MK game before MK:X.
As mentioned by previous posters, although they're both fighting games, but you can't really compare them. As for the fighting genre goes, my favorite has to go to Tekken. Smash is fun don't get me wrong, but it's more for "fun" rather than serious fighting+combo-ing.

you can't really compare Smash to traditional fighters, never could, still can't. it's like asking the better racer of Maro Kart and Gran Turismo. but I think even less comparable.
Bro you took the words right out of my mouth. I saw this topic yesterday and thought about it and the GT/Mario Kart comparison is what immediately came to mind. I always skim through the posts before making my own, but saw that my argument had already been made multiple times over lol.
My game library ranges from Mario Kart to Call of Duty to Tales of Xillia to Diablo 3 to Forza. To me gaming is about having fun - not blindly supporting only one company while thumbing your nose at "the evil other systems."

Sorry to Necro the thread but I didn't realize I'd been quoted. You called Streets of Rage exactly what I would: a beat'em up (well I say sidescrolling beat'em up but still). Never called those types of games brawlers or heard others refer to them as such... perhaps difference in region? I'm from the Southern US. Games like smash and power stone have always been brawlers or platforming brawlers to me.

Nope. Southern US. And it's not the first time I've heard it called that. I just think it's kinda weird. One those existential "why is it called a fork" moments.
to the above conversation, I've always thought that Smash and other fighters of it's ilk were referred to as "Party Fighters", while Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and the like were referred to as "Traditional Fighters".
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
Smash is a party game, nothing more, nothing less.
Not true. For Glory and 1vs1 changes it from a party game to a competitive fighting game, and as for the posts above, I've never heard a game described as a platforming brawler. The most accurate way to describe Smash Bros is as a fighting game, even if it doesn't play like a traditional fighting game.
