then it would not sell at all.... Seriously as bad as the Wii U is selling the fact that is selling at all is a testament to the power the Nintendo brand name and the draw of their first party game.... if Sony or Microsoft released a unique sweet console powerful enough but allegedly less powerful than the competitors, with no third party support to speak off, no account system, region lock, with a cool feature that people will not want to embrace because it is too unique, as its sole sale point and at price point not too distant from competition, sales wouldn't pass a million on the lifetime of the console

I agree.

There would have been no gamepad. It would have named the WiiWon. It would have been had beefier hardware and a Wiimote with an Ouya-style analog. It would have had stronger 3rd party support at the cost of weaker 1st party offerings. Reggie's body would have been ready.

Only thing I think that's for sure would be if Sony made the Wii U, it would've been marketed better. My preferred consoles have always been the PlayStations but I have quite a few issues with what Sony has done with PS4 so far. One thing it has done right though is market the system itself very well. Nintendo has failed miserably in that regard. It's not Nintendo's fault that people are dumb and can't tell that the Wii U is a new machine and not an add-on, eventhough it should be completely obvious to anybody with two functioning brain cells, but it is Nintendo's fault that it's done virtually nothing to try and fix this.

Just take a look at the PlayStation brand for your answer. The first console to sell over 100million PlayStation, PlayStation2 was the fastest selling console in history selling over 155million, PlayStation 3 while being Sony's only blip was released one year after the Xbox360 with the 360 already having a 10million lead. Yet despite that 10million lead the PlayStation3 bounced back just look where it is today still going strong, the PlayStation 4 being Sony's fastest selling console in history to date with 7million sold, this alone shows you the power of Sony's PlayStation brand. If Sony made the Wii U highly likly success, as Sony knows who there are selling there console's too along with marketing etc.

@banacheck there's a difference, playstation consoles sell because they are good, reasonably priced, and have good third party support (have always had the most third party exclusives). Of course in case of the PSOne, PS2 and PSP piracy greatly aided with (hardware) sales.

Note that the PS3 couldn't sell until the price was brought down to reasonable levels and the Vita is having troubling selling because it has hyperexpensive propietary memory cards and third party support has been lacking (although is finally picking up a bit). I doubt that if Sony made a truly bad product that people would buy it just because its playstation... It's not like the brandname Nintendo where its clear that there is number of people which is shrinking but its still significant that are literally willing to buy anything at any price just because it has the name Nintendo on it and plays the latest Mario...

I think that's more of an indication that people are buying PS more for hardware, rather than software. It seems like more people are buying PS4, because it can run CoD Ghosts at 1080p, rather than actually caring about what software it gets.

Even if PS4 is getting games like Destiny, Assassin's Creed Unity, etc, those games being able to be ran at 1080p will be more important than the games themselves.

I'll repeat what I said earlier. What the XBox/Playstation are and what Nintendo does are entirely different things. The hardware itself doesn't sell units it's the software that does it at the end of the day. Sony and Microsoft compete with each other to build a third party platform that allows you to play the big third party IP. Nintendo makes a console that can do that but is primarily there to deliver Nintendo's IP.

A Nintendo console like the PS4 could have in theory won the "console wars" outright. It could have equally just been seen as still second or third in a GPU arms race and lost both the Nintendo fans AND jack of all trades. So for Nintendo making a console like the Wii U was probably the better option.

A Sony console like the Wii U could have also one the "console wars". It would have just had to make a point of being the cheap platform like the PS2 ended up being. However it could have just as easily seen them drop out of the race. So for Sony the GPU arms race was probably the best choice especially given that it has actually paid off.

Note that the PS3 couldn't sell until the price was brought down to reasonable levels

The PS3 sold slowly at first because of a mix of price point & having hardly any game's, that was not helped by the fact everywhere sold out with ebay having ridiculous prices. For the time 2006-2007 the PS3 was well worth it's RRP point, Sony lost something like $300 on every PS3 sold but a lot of customers also failed to actually see thay where getting a lot of value for there money with BC to boot. It's ashame as we'll never see a console with that much value for money again, and the value for money didn't just come from the new Blu-Ray at the time. it came from it's custom hardware, Blu-Ray and obviously it's BC which was hardware BC (US) & software BC (EU) for different country's. No one will buy bad products just because of brand name, but that come's back to some of these manufacturers know who thay are selling there products too and what products thay are actually making. Take Microsoft back at E3 totally lost who thay where selling there product too and look where thay are at today it's a total different console, that was partly thanks to going off data collected off 360 uses which doesn't tell the whole stroy and the data being out dated 2010/2011didn't help either.

These key decisions were being made towards the end of 2010 and moving into 2011
Untitled

The number of people playing on console hasn't got any smaller the PS4 on it's own has proven that, if a console isn't sell that comes down too games, price point or simply no one wants it aka bad product in people eyes.

People buy brands consoles because of its games namely exclusives, the hardware being good also comes down to games as i can tell you now if the PS4 had the Wii U spec's you wouldn't be seeing MMO's like Planetside 2 or Destiny, Arkham Knight etc never mind possible future games.

You're wrong. If either the Xbox One AND/OR PS4 had similar specs or architecture, I can pretty much guarantee Wii U would be getting more games, because now it would be easier to port the games.

Destiny is going to be on Xbox 360 abd PS3, but not Wii U, so your specs discussion is full of crap.
I'd also be willing to bet, that if Xbox One was PowerPC, its specs would be more similar to Wii U than you probably want to believe.

it would be an expensive powerhouse and all the cool guys would have it and worship the gamepad.
well...... except MS fans wouldn't like it if it was made by Sony and vice-versa.

Eh I bought my PS4 for software. All the software won't be on the Wii U like Destiny and Arkham Night. Plus its the only console with a baseball game.

Wii U will have Wii Sports Club baseball, though. Then we have Xbox One. If you like Halo so much, then you would have bought an Xbox One, not a PS4, so there must be a reason why you bought PS4.

My point is that most of the reasoning behind why anyone would buy a PS4, aside from exclusives, is only because CoD Ghosts was in 1080p. A better resolution is obviously better, but under the circumstances, that shouldn't really be a reason to buy PS4 over any other console.

Deep down I think you know comparing Wii Sports Club Baseball to MLB: The Show 2014 is absolute B******t and Destiny isn't Halo just like how F-Zero isn't Mario Kart.

Edit: So whats the point of getting COD on Wii U then apart from pointer controls (also no DLC is easily a minus for most COD fans), so your point applies to the Wii U just as much as the other consoles.

It's partially BS, but the Club version of baseball will still have motion control, so there's always that. Maybe the GamePad will be used to catch the ball, like in that trailer from E3 2011. The point is that there are plenty of reasons to buy a Wii U, even more than any other console(IMO), but some people will still choose which console they want, based on 1080p.

CoD Ghosts in 1080p isn't enough reason to buy PS4, IMO. Even with Project Cars, that looks just as good as Drive Club, so why would anyone buy a PS4 specifically for that game, when there is an equal(as far as we know) alternative on every other console?

Wii Sports Baseball is fun but is not even remotely close to a good Baseball sim its really more like a minigame so I really feel that point holds no value in this situation comparing it to MLB: The Show 2014 is kind of an insult.

Well, they are both baseball sims. If anything, Wii Sports Club baseball will be more accessible to people who just want to play, It's the same thing with Wii Sports Club Golf. I would say EA is competing with their Tiger Woods game. Same scenario, different game.

I wouldn't buy Project Cars and Drive Club. I'd buy one or the other, and call it good.

This is my opinion. I won't buy a PS4, because it's games are in 1080p. If I cared that much, I'd buy a PC and get 4K.

Speaking of Wii sports club, I wonder when baseball or boxing will be released?
