My theory is the release of the Wii U. There is absolutely no need for these systems yet. A casual glance at recent software proves it. That being said, yes, there was a need for Nintendo to release a more powerful, HD system. I think the other two were fearful of a 360/PS3/Wii U market. And rightly so. Nah, Deffinatly would not be the Wii U causing it. PS3 / 360 were old tech with old hardware, it was time to change it all up as the speed at which technology is going forward is faster now than ever. GTA V for example pushed the consoles to the limit and when games reach the consoles limit I think it's time to start a new plan of action and move forward as consumers expect more quality and visuals out of a game. Sony and Microsoft pushed each into into the new generaion of console, not the Wii U. The Wii U isn't supposed to go head to head with the new PS4/XBO, it's doing its own thing and I am convinced it will be a success down the road.
