Does anyone remember when both Sony and Microsoft said the 360 and PS3 would be around for 10 to 12 years? What do you suppose forced their hands? My theory is the release of the Wii U. There is absolutely no need for these systems yet. A casual glance at recent software proves it.

That being said, yes, there was a need for Nintendo to release a more powerful, HD system. I think the other two were fearful of a 360/PS3/Wii U market. And rightly so.

Nah, Deffinatly would not be the Wii U causing it.
PS3 / 360 were old tech with old hardware, it was time to change it all up as the speed at which technology is going forward is faster now than ever. GTA V for example pushed the consoles to the limit and when games reach the consoles limit I think it's time to start a new plan of action and move forward as consumers expect more quality and visuals out of a game. Sony and Microsoft pushed each into into the new generaion of console, not the Wii U.

The Wii U isn't supposed to go head to head with the new PS4/XBO, it's doing its own thing and I am convinced it will be a success down the road.

I love Nintendo, Sony & Microsoft - why? I am a true gamer.

Hmm, I'm not really sure.

If I'd have to guess here and now, I'd presume that all three consoles will sell about the same as each other.

Personally, I don't see why most people would bother buying a PS4 or XBone if they already have a PS3 or 360.

If they get some really amazing exclusives down the line, sure, but if you look at the hardware, it's just a graphics boost. Which from my point of view are extremely irrelevant when picking a console to buy.

The Wii U at least has the premise of new ways to play, which is; coupled with Nintendo's exclusives, about the only reason I bother with consoles to accompany my PC.

Well for me I got a PS4 cause I have an Xbox 360 so I missed alot of the Sony exclusives that the PS3 had like Journey and Last of Us for example.

Well, I said most people. And "most" people do not seem to be overly interested in how the graphics look. And I have a hard time seeing anyone who plays a lot of games picking a console based on graphics, if that is a high priority you're looking at the wrong type of machine to play games on. At least that's how I see it.

I might just be weird though.

Or wait, I am weird, though I do not know if I am in this context.

Right, that makes sense. If you've stayed with one of them for the last gen, and then getting the opposite of the current gen for a heap of exclusives you've missed.

Hmm, I thought neither the XBone or the PS4 was backwards compatible though. Did I just imagine reading that?

@Contrite: Well the PS4 isn't backwards compatible per say. By next year Sony hopes to release their streaming service Gaikai which will stream PS3 games onto the PS4.

Oh right. Well that's good.

I don't really trust streaming games myself though.
Input lag is.. annoying.

Most owners of the 360/Ps3 will never see comparison videos for next gen, let's be clear about this. Like that's as delusional as thinking X will cause most Wii owners to upgrade (much as I hate to admit that...)

However in the long run they can be sold on the idea of them mostly because of expected performance improvements which are real. Not at launch for the majority and not without the killer app but in the long run yes. That's the reason why people would upgrade if they're going to. And no, X isn't what will get Wii owners to upgrade. Mario, Zelda, Kart and Smash will get them to upgrade. You won't get Wii owners to upgrade for the visuals because if they were going to they would have moved to the 360/PS3 a long time ago.

PS3/360 owners though. They've had upto eight years on the same level of hardware so there is definitely demand for a visual upgrade. That alone is enough to push sales for those systems for the first little bit.

Oh I don't deny that it will be a factor and has been on launch, but software is infinitely more important. For the most part the better graphics (at least in terms of graphics specifically as opposed to the power of the console as a whole) is kinda just an excuse to have exclusive games on new consoles so the new consoles can be successful so that console gaming is still relevant and the big companies behind console games continue to make money off of console games etc. etc.

I can hardly even tell a difference without a side by side comparison, at least when it comes to 7-8th gen games. Even Forza hardly looks any different than past racing games, IMO, but that's just Forza.

Even Killzone Shadowfall, from a technical stand point, looks to be VERY similar to the Killzone games on PS3. I'm pretty convinced that the IPs and their graphic style will always dictate how their games look and play. Even just playing CoD Ghosts, I can tell that those are the some of same graphical decisions they probably would have made based on my playtime with the Tony Hawk series before Skate "stole" some of its thunder.

I just gotta say, too, is that games like Viva Pinata and BK: Nuts and Bolts(I know they're both Rare) definitely would/will look better with the extra visual fidelity Wii U has brought to the table with Super Mario 3D World. The ammount of detail in that game is pretty impressive, considering the art style they're using(cartoony).
