That's not why they can't get the mass market the Wii had. The reason is that the Wii U is the opposite of the Wii in it's appeal.

That may be a part of it, but if they try and do a wii 2.0 next generation, they'll fail. Casual gamers definitely wouldn't go out and buy it in droves like they did the wii. Didn't Miyamoto recently just say he's glad he doesn't have to develop games for them anymore? If they try and bring back those people yet again, they'll fail. Unless of course there was a Nintendo smart phone or tablet with all the little game apps, which would never happen

I think hes saying, you don't compare based on length of availability, but on total sales in the generation.

The Wii U is currently ahead of Xbox in terms of total units sold (like it matters).

It's barely ahead and the console had a year head start. That's what I'm saying.

All I care about is the quality of the games. The Wii U is gonna end up 3rd in this generation. That's okay. Now back to the games.

I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

I think it's safe to say that the Wii-moniker will be dead after this generation.

Then lets be more specific....

Over the last 6months yeah, barely. Wii U is slightly behind the XBOne on VGCharts (yeah, yeah, VGCharts):
Wii U: 1.3mill units
XBOne: 1.5mill units

However we have to remember that it wasn't long ago that the Wii U was half the XBOne in weekly sales. If you narow it down to the last three months (i.e. since Kart came out) become a little bit clearer:
Wii U: 1mill units
XBOne: 700k units

It's "barely ahead" of the XBOne and it has been out longer but post-kart it has stopped letting the XBOne gain ground. And no, that's not just a Kart bump above. The Wii U has been fairly consistently outselling the XBOne every week since Kart. What will happen when Smash comes out? Or are we still betting that the Halo collection will be a game changer?

Halo collection is pretty enticing. I mean I want an xbox one for that. Every map in every game in one package? Yes please!

Oh, oh. oh, and there's also the fact that it's just gorgeously remastered to look even better than before

If the Wii U continues on this road, they'll just let it run its course, and bring out a new console when it is time. Some of the losses they obtained in recent times wasn't just because of poor sales, but because of spending on things like buildings and other acquisitions. For the moment, the 3DS will continue to provide relief for Nintendo until the next-gen arises, which will likely start with a new handheld from them. Considering Nintendo's comment about focusing more on hardcore gamers than casuals (since the casuals left them long before the Wii era ended), I get the feeling that Nintendo's next-gen console will not follow the Wii and Wii U's line of thinking.

I was wondering, what BIG thing could Nintendo do if the Wii U continues to fail to meet sales expectations? Do you think Nintendo will do something BIG, something predictable, what? I'm not expert on economics so I'm just wondering what some of you would think would be the next logical step then for them to save the system?

It's big but it's big in the same way that Wind Waker HD was big. Wind Waker sold to some of the people who already had the console and has moved ~1mill units, Kart convinced people to invest in the platform. If it was a brand new Halo I'd be with you 100% but for a HD remake? Against a new Smash? For consoles on a level playing field?

It'll do well but I doubt it'll move that many consoles

Just don't forget that the console war is NOT a winner takes all contest. Nintendo can still turn a very decent operating profit even if they don't "win" the current generation. Microsoft has lost billions on the Xbox line and Sony hasn't done much better AFAIK. Perception is important but the bottom line rules.

Is not only halo collection... cmon... i am not a xbox fan, but reducing the hype for xbox one to halo collection is a bit limited...

they will got forza horizon 2 soon for example.. (why microsoft and not sony made a game located in the place i used to go on holiday?!!! f**k)... what os gonna get wiiu as similar game... nothing... that's the difference... no matter if each of us like those kinds of games or not... xbox on the long run will outsell wiiu just because it can appeal a larger base of core gamers...

Microsoft's huge problem with Xbox One is that there's still a large focus on last gen. A big chunk of the games coming to Xbox One this fall are either Xbox/Xbox 360 HD Remakes or games you can also buy on Xbox 360. This pretty much leaves Sunset Overdrive as the key game to try and help the Xbox One succeed.

As for what I think Nintendo would do is Pokémon Yellow remake, any proper Pokémon RPG for Wii U would make the console sell insanely well and Yellow would be chosen because of huge nostalgia and gen 1 is the only generation that can't be easily transferred to X and Y.

Another Mario? We want something new! Nintendo is hanging too much on old characters. They really should invest into new characters with a good gameplay! They could make a real exclusive RPG game if they really would like.

It doesn't matter for one reason, their software sells great on it. As long as thats the story going forward, they won't abandon Wii U users.

However they need to do something about their reduced presence in the console market and that "story" might not last forever (which could be problematic).

I don't see why that's the case. Console casual gaming is, and always has been fundamentally different from mobile casual gaming. Console casual games are heavily focused on large scale local multiplayer, and/or derive their enjoyment largely from the act of controlling the game itself. This is why the likes of Just Dance, Wii Party, and soon Shape Up are still being released and are still popular.

Now, with the DS, casual experiences were largely single player, and in that case, they have absolutely been shoved aside by the mobile market. But none of that makes the market inaccessible to Nintendo anymore. The casual consumer, or any consumer for that matter, will buy a new product that appeals to them. Nintendo just has to now take the mobile market into account when trying to appeal to this market, and be sure not to have too great an overlap.

Miyamoto is just one person, and given that they are are about to roll out a new platform specifically meant to have a broad appeal, I'd say those opinions are not generally the one of Nintendo as a whole.

Nope, Nintendo left casuals long before the Wii era ended, not the other way around. Nintendo stopped rolling out software towards the end of the Wii's lifecycle. They stopped really marketing the system heavily. Why would anyone support a system that the creator is ignoring.

Notice the dramatic drop in software in 2011, when the Wii really started to nosedive. The biggest casual game of the year, Mario & Sonic, still sold 3.6M units.

And the Wii and Wii U have completely different lines of thinking. The Wii was designed from the ground up to have widespread appeal. The Wii U was built for the ground up to be a more hardcore console. The reason for the dramatic difference in success is that the Wii's approach hit the nail on the head for what they were trying to do, while the Wii U's approach missed the mark.

They'll try something else until they either manage to sell it or it's time to move on.

Their big push right now with the system seem to be Amiibo.
