I'm thinking about buying Pikmin 3 but I've never played any Pikmin game before. It's just not something I'd normally play but that's probably cause the concept is pretty unique. I already watched gameplay trailers but I still can't make up my mind. What do you guys love so much bout the Pikmin games? What do you dislike? Can you compare the gameplay to any other game?

I like adventures, RPGs, strategy games,... the only thing I don't really like are platformers unless they're very creative (such as donkey kong country)

I liked Pikmin 2 more than Pikmin 1, but some people like 1 more.
In Pikmin 2....there really isn't very much to dislike! The only thing is in later caves, the level layout is random to a degree, which can make that particular sublevel very difficult to beat (although it's always possible). If you reset the game, you had a chance of getting something easier.

In the story mode, you don't really need that much strategy, but challenge mode is where you really need to plan things out! It's very similar to mission mode in Pikmin 3.

I've played Pikmin 2 100% about 7 or 8 times now (6 on Gamecube, 2 on Wii), and every time I play the game I do something differently, and I'm more efficient! It's still challenging each time I play, however. It's not easy to compare Pikmin to other games because there really aren't other games like it.

If you like RTS games (which I usually don't, actually!), you'll more than likely love Pikmin. It's not too linear so you have some flexibility in the order to complete different tasks. If you want a challenge, you can try playing the game without resetting at ALL. I usually try not to, but if I lose like 60 Pikmin to an explosion, and most of them are white/purple which are hard to get, I'll find myself resetting. It's a very hard, lengthy game if you don't reset!

Versus mode is also extremely fun if you have another friend willing to play with you. It's best just to watch a video on YouTube to see what it's like, it's very competitive.

Pikmin 1/2 are GREAT games. I prefer Pikmin 2 over Pikmin 1 but it's the opposite for some. I would highly recommend getting getting either one for Gamecube if you plan on using the Gamepad off-TV play/Pro controller, or Wii if you plan on using wii remote + nunchuck to get a feel for the controls before Pikmin 3 is released.

I wish I could compare the gameplay to something else but honestly PIkmin 1 and 2 are about the only games I've played like this that I can think of.
I can say they do really take some strategy when it comes to leading around your army of up to 100 pikmin, some with different abilities.
Personally, if you want to go back, I would start with 1. It doesn't feel as complicated to me, and it's my personal favorite of the 2. That being said, it has a 30 day (in game days, not real days) time limit, and if you don't get enough ship parts before that, it's game over really.I think it's not too hard to avoid that though personally. I can get all the parts with several days to spare usually. 2 does not have this time limit, though it still has days.

Yup! In Pikmin 1, everything you need to obtain (ship parts for your rocket that crash landed), is above ground, and there are four big areas and the final (small) area for you to explore.
In Pikmin 2, there are four big areas to explore (to collect treasures), and 14 underground caves to explore. The first few are short, but they get progressively longer and more difficult throughout the game. However, exploring the caves isn't like exploring the over world areas. They generally have much more enemies/hazards than you'll find above ground, but usually have small sublevels that don't take long to "explore"

Cool, sounds like fun. I love exploring. Hm the time limit is something I'm not too fond of, but maybe they don't use that in the 3rd one or maybe it's optional :)

I remember that Majora's Mask was a brilliant game but I've never got used to the time system, I never felt at ease, was always rushing...

I didn't really like the new control versions of the game on Wii, but I liked the GCN versions. I liked Pikmin 1 more than 2, but mainly because of the concept and story of the game. 2 was overall better gameplay wise, IMO.
That said, 3 seems to leveling up to the interesting story and concept of 1, with better gameplay of 2, better use of the Wii remote than the new control versions of 1 and 2, plus the GamePad use.
I think it will be the best one yet.
I agree with Miyamoto that it's hard to go back to the first games, because we've seen how more modern machines are better suited to run a similar game.

To add on to this, while you are underground in Pikmin 2 time stops, so you can take as much time as you need. Also, with a few exceptions, you cannot get more Pikmin when going through sublevels, so you need to plan ahead as to what number and colors to bring with you into caves.

Like: The feeling that you're really stranded alone on an unknown planet in the first game...dunno, just something about the first game that makes it stand out to the other.
Dislike: Cavern of Chaos. (I hate that level, lol)

actually reads post
Oh, erm...I just like how you start off with like...5 little boogers...and then in only a few in-game days you have this army that takes down monsters in like, 5 seconds. xD I just like how it has puzzles involving each Pikmin (red immune to fire, yellow can be thrown higher, or the whites being immune to poison and dig up hidden treasure), as well as strategies for dealing with boss monsters.

I love Erica (Strike Witches), Eureka (Eureka Seven), and Tenma (School Rumble), stay away from them. xD
Update: Also love Yukari and Mizore from Rosario + Vampire.
Another Update: Also Yuuki...from School Rumble...
Yet Another Update: Also Amber and Xiao Pai from Rune Factory 4.

If you want you can try out one of the Wii versions of the first two games, just to get an idea of what to expect in the 3rd.

I honestly can't think of anything to not like about the franchise, at least for me. Even if I did, though, it's so unique that I wouldn't care. There's nothing like Pikmin, and should be tried out by everyone.

It should also be noted that Miyamoto seems incredibly happy with Pikmin 3. There's something about a developer being so passionate about his product that makes you want to try it out.

The AI is supposed to be alot better in 3.

Like I said, at the time, Pikmin was a great series, but it definitely aged. That's just my opinion. Pikmin 3 is basically guaranteed to do more justice for the series than any other entry.

I don't like that word aged. The games seem the same whenever I play them. Still enjoy them (if they were good).

I still enjoy plenty of older games. For some reason, though, Pikmin just seemed to get really old to me the way the game handled. The AI and overall gameplay improved immensely between 1 and 2. I expect the same to happen for 3.
The only analogy I can think of is keeping dead batteries. There's just no reason to keep dead batteries, so I replace them.
It's just the improvements they make between each game that makes me think that. I can't really say I enjoy every old game, because I can notice the improvements, but some never age.
