I was hoping for a cheaper price but other than that I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. For the first time I'm actually looking forward to the Wii U and it's gone from a possible buy to a definite buy at some point. Considering how I felt about the system after this year's E3, this is a huge improvement.

Well, considering I won't go buying an inferior system when I have the option to purchase the superior I'll definitely be buying the Deluxe edition, however unfortunately for me it will probably be after Christmas when I get it unless I can find a way to come up with $250 between now and launch, and seeing as how I'm a full time student with no job that's not likely :/ Oh well, it will just make it that much sweeter when I get the system and ZombiU.

SQUEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

Isn't it just Montser Hunter 3 but with a bit more stuff, HD graphics, and transfarring with the 3DS version? I feel like I'm missing something here.

It's an expansion, and for us Americans, a large one. Crapload of new monsters (most from Portable 3rd), as well as the Mountain Stream, and the actual new monsters like Guran and the countless subspecies. Not to mention the weapons. (and Tower 3 from Freedom Unite)
And the most "who really gives a crap" feature, SHADOWS! xD

Oh, okay. Now I get Pixelman's unreliquent squeeling. Monster Hunter was never really my cup of tea, so I'm not too excited, but I get why people like it.
Anyway, the only reasoning behind 8 GB of flash space in my mind would be that people will use hardrives anyway, so it's just there for people that won't use them; which begs the question why it didn't come with a hardrive so people who would use hardrives could store more than one full retail game. Considering the launch lineup looks more core oriented, it's kind of surprising. Plus, $300 without a hardrive or game of any sort is pretty expensive. I don't know who's going to buy this outside of Nintendo fans.

  • Harddrives are cheap and are getting cheaper by the day. Easier to buy your own.
  • People who like new technology

Hard drives are indeed becoming cheaper.

Which is why Nintendo could have stuck one of the damn things in the rather expensive Wii U.

If you're any kind of gamer, you're going to need to buy external storage, now. I seem to recall a lot of people throwing a tantrum about having to buy storage for the Vita.

Cho, Don't you think Nintendo figured WTF is the point? A year from now whatever we (Nintendo) put in is not going to be enough and instead creating of new memory size related skus lets keep it simple and basic and let the consumer decide and do what is best for them?

I don't think the external storage is a great idea (hidden cost and possible speed issues) but it would have added a non-negligible cost to the Wii U, assuming Nintendo was unwilling to absorb the increase in price. A consumer 1TB internal HDD still costs around $75 or more. I know Nintendo would be able to get them cheaper than that, but I imagine it would bump the price up another $50 or so (since they seem to want to aim at multiples of $50).

I used to have a blog link here. I'll put it back up when the blog has something to read.

No. No. No

What's going to happen is this - families, parents, casual players - these people are going to buy the console expecting what is in the box to be enough - that's a reasonable assumption to be making, too. What is in the box SHOULD be enough. Especially when it's going to be the most expensive product on the market.

So then, let's assume these people log online and try and download a couple of games. If they've got the basic console, some retail games are going to be too big for the internal space.

"Screw that" these people think. Now, perhaps they go into a retail shop to buy the box product, or perhaps they don't buy the game at all. Either way, that's a sale that didn't happen on the Wii U eShop.

And so that eShop is going to, once again, struggle to get any traction. When the heck are Nintendo going to learn?

What is in the box is enough to play games as they have been played since the 1970's. Said family does not need to download games to enjoy the Wii U as is. Also, the family needs to realize what the heck they are buying and learn about downloading and memory. I hope that for the fact that there is 2 Wii U options to choose from will nudge them into at least considering and thinking about this.

you're expecting
1. families to always know what they are getting in terms of gaming
2. Nintendo fans to research to see if anything other than a new Mario exists.

Too high expectations.

Wouldn't it be great though if there were more regular eShopers, though? With the paltry amount of space given, lots of people just won't bother to get games for it at all, especially since games are only getting bigger these days. Not everyone that downloads games off of XBLA and PSN go on gaming websites all the time and know when the best stuff comes out. If they have the space needed to get stuff they want (and they do) then that's one thing they'll never have to worry about. The amount of space on the WiiU won't even be enough certain games, and even then 32 GB isn't huge. Considering a 160 GB PS3 costs $250, it's kind of weird to see such paltry amount of space available for a much more expensive system.

I wasn't surprised by the lack of HDD and am actually glad. They probably would have had to bump up the price by $50 and I can spend that money getting a bigger one than they likely would have included. However, I was surprised by the inclusion of an HDMI cable. My brand new, $300, 320 gig PS3 didn't even come with one.

Haha, I made a list of the twelve games I'm interested in. Nintendo Land, NSMBU, ZombiU, Rayman Legends, Pikmin 3, Lego City, The Wonderful 101, Scribblenauts Unlimited, Monster Hunter, Assassin's Creed 3, Batman Arkham City, Disney Epic Mickey. Probably am only going to get the first 5 though, I don't want to spend a grand. Looks like we have the opposite problem haha.

Anyone who thought it was going to come with a massive amount of memory was fooling themselves. The rumors from eariler this year pretty much said the base model would be 8GB. That said I did expect some sort of nintendo branded SD card or HDD for sale al la microsoft.

Personally going to go with a 32 or 64gb SD card and when that gets full switch to a hdd.

WAT!
