Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate gets my vote, but Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut deserves a mention as well.

Also...why is everyone mentioning Bayonetta? That was published by Nintendo, therefore it's a first-party game...

The whole 1st, 2nd, 3rd party debate gets so confusing when Nintendo is involved, but as I understand it, Nintendo would need to own the IP to make it 1st party. Nintendo also published Bravely Default, but that is a 3rd party game.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

It's not a first party game. It was made by a studio that isn't owned by Nintendo, therefore it's a 3rd party game.

That would make Smash, Kirby, Pokemon, Paper Mario, Fire Emblem, WarioWare, Golden Sun, every Mario sports game, Gamecube era F-Zero and Star Fox, and most handheld Zelda games all 3rd party.

Please don't start this argument again.
"Bayonetta 2 was made by Platinum Games so it's third party."
"No, it was published by Nintendo so it's first party."
"But Nintendo didn't make the game so it's third party."
"They funded it so it's first party."
"They funded it but didn't make it so it's second party.
"That's not even what second party is."

PokeMario

CanisWolfred

There is no "second party". That was a term invented by gamers, but the industry doesn't actually use it. If Nintendo's the one publishing it (or any other console manufactuer), it's first-party. If it's published by anyone else, it's third party. Pretty cut & dry.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.

I'm very curious about this! what about monster hunter 4? these are online games correct? what is this game like? what is your personal perspective of it, and how does it play?

Monster Hunter is an action game about- you guessed it- hunting monsters! You go on quests to slay dinosaur/ dragon type monsters, then carve them up to get supplies for new armor and weapons. You then use your new armor and weapons to hunt BIGGER monsters. This cycle will repeat for about six months or so. Combat is fun and very challenging, though it can be difficult for newcomers. These games do have online play, allowing up to four hunters to hunt together, which is a ton of fun. Crafting new weapons and armor is addicting and will become your number one goal in life while playing this game. It also features many different weapon classes which are all unique and add their own twist to gameplay. I've played this game for close to 1000 hours and I expect that number to double with MH4U.

HAL, Sora, Gamefreak, IntSys, Camelot, Next Level, Namco, Capcom, and Sega are all owned by Nintendo then?

you right except for sora. thats still first party. the rest are partners (hal, next level) or nintendo owns a large part but not out right (game freak) Capcom, Sega, and Namco should have been left out tho. They hurt your point a little.

No, all those games were co-developed by Nintendo meaning they're first party games.

Project Sora was 72% owned by Nintendo. It is now defunct. Sora Ltd, Sakurai's current company, is wholly independent. GameFreak is also wholly independent, though the Pokemon IP is owned in equal thirds by GameFreak, Nintendo, and The Pokemon Company (which is owned by Nintendo, so technically it's a 67%-33% split).

Capcom developed the Oracle Zelda games and The Minish Cap. Namco developed several Mario sports and Star Fox games. Sega developed F-Zero GX. My point is that games being developed by 3rd party companies doesn't necessarily make the games 3rd party, and this helps support that.

well 101 is a third party developed game but nintendo owns the ip. this causes alot more grey area than bayonetta which is 100% third party.

sora is/was listed as a nintendo development studio. 72% is quite a lot don't you think. i believe that's what i said about pokemon just without the figures. the reason why capcom/namco/sega/ hurt your argument is the fact that they are not considered 1st party developers. hal would have driven your point better by itself due to everyone believing it's a first party studio. monolith soft is more of a first party studio than hal. i'm sure that would blow a few gamers minds.

Oops. I forgot Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed which is the Wii U game I've played the most, so I'd say it's my favourite Wii U game.

I'd say third party games are independent games like Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed and also independent games that might be published by Nintendo in some or all territories, like The Last Story, some Capcom games and Bayonetta 2. First party games are only the games that are partially or totally owned and paid by Nintendo like Fatal Frame/Zero 5, Xenoblade Chronicles or Pandora's Tower.

Nintendo publishing: still third party
Nintendo co-developing which means co-owning and co-paying: first party

Of course, this is just my point of view.

I really don't like the navigation bar of Nintendo Life continuously reappearing while browsing!!
