Topic: Was this E3 the final nail in the coffin for the Wii U?

I hope not, I really do, but I have to accept that this might be signaling the end. If it is true, I'm not buying a Nintendo home console again unless I become unreasonably rich. I'm probably gonna get burnt on my Wii U, with it going out while my PS4 really heats up. I don't have much faith in Nintendo anymore.

Sony's bombshell conference really made Nintendo's a huge disappointment. If we think back there wasn't that much last year. The only big announcements were Zelda U and Splatoon, with trailer maintenance for X, Yoshi's Sewing Simulator, and of course Smash. The direct (I'm calling it a direct) started with Smash and ended with Splatoon, with Zelda as a huge mid point.

This year had Star Fox, which is obviously no Zelda, but there were some other good, likely better, games. They really needed to blow out X and SMTxFE Bethesda-style. Un-subbed Japanese trailers and sleepy trailers just don't make for a good presentation. The direct should have gone: Star Fox, glut of 3DS games, then transition back to Wii U with Mario Tenis, bore people with AMIIBO PARTY, then show Mario Maker (the game, not the grid paper), and end on a good trailers of FE Fate and SMTxFE. Presentation quality would have improved the conference a lot.

Granted, I don't think the Wii U will get out of 2016 as Nintendo's main console.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

@Waveboy surprised you're looking forward to some dual analog stick action there.... only non Nintendo console games that interest me at the moment are arkham knight, south park, the Rare collection and possibly Transformers Devastation. Doom (II) was fun in the 90s but even then I always got lost in single player not knowing where to go next. I wish there was a controller which could display a map at all times - if only someone came up with that idea crazy ah... One can dream.

We know there are a pile of Wii U titles but they didn't really talk about them. They showed a lot of stuff for the 3DS but most of it was either "meh" or on the distant horizon. They gave us all of the big franchises but none of them were what we wanted. Starfox was nice but the graphical style didn't impress. Animal Crossing wasn't Animal Crossing. Metroid wasn't Metroid. It was a very "confirm people's beliefs about where Nintendo is whatever they are" sort of direct.

If that Animal Crossing game for Wii U was actually Animal Crossing or of that Metroid was even as it is but on Wii U? I wouldn't have had any issues. As it is, I don't know what to think.

So far I disagree, while it isn't exactly the style I'd imagined, it is the rough direction I'd imagined they'd take if they made a Metroid game that didn't revolve around Samus. I personally would prefer it if it were an open world (similar to Far Cry 3) game, along with a caves system to satisfy the Metroidvania needs, but that's not doable on the 3ds. The Federation being the main part of the story and Coop gameplay does fit in with what I imagined for a spin off title.

Oh god one of these "Nintendo doomed guys!!11!" thread, not like we haven't already had hundreds of these threads. One lackluster E3 that didn't have many Wii U games doesn't mean the Wii U is dead. There is many Wii U games coming such as Devil Third, Mighty No. 9, Yoshi Wolly World, Rodea the Sky Warrior, Fatal Frame, and ect. There will be plenty of games to play through it it life span. Saying the Wii U is dead is like saying Subway will be dead soon. As @Ralizah said, stop being drama queens already.

I'm confused, is there going to be a new Nintendo direct for the wii u in next couple days? I really enjoy my wii u, it's been a refreshing break since I owned the N64 and have mainly used ps2,ps3 and 360; however, I am finding it hard to justify not trading my wii u in for a ps4. I still happily own a gamecube with 3 wave birds and almost every game worth having on it. To a degree, it almost could makeup for not having the wii u..... Ugh Nintendo I love you. Why do you make things so difficult

When I think of Metroid the game that comes into my head is large and atmospheric with a huge sense of being alone. You run into an unexplored area and have no idea what has happened there or what you have to do next. The only thing that tells you how to progress are the powerups and environmental clues. That's what Metroid is. I'm interested in the idea of this game and I'm keeping my eye on it. Probably one of only two or maybe three titles I see on the horizon for the 3DS I am interested in. But it's not quite the Metroid I was wanting to see... and not just because it's not on the Wii U.

I feel just embarrassed to be honest. My friends and I all take time off work for E3 and we watch all the conference's, play games and eat pizza we have my WII U, a PS4 and an XB1 all set up. We were all blown away by the Bethesda conference (best show in my opinion as far as games go), the Microsoft show was great, loads of exclusive games, and great new tech with that elite controller and the Hololens, and the PS4 show was OK but a little thin compared to the others. Then we all sat back and hoped for an equally impressive Nintendo show.
Unfortunately what we got was a puppet show and games we all new about ! The whole presentation was aimed at children and my mates couldn't watch it for the same reason they dont watch Nickalodeon or the Disney channel, its AIMED at children! Are Nintendo actually saying if you want grown up games by PS4 or XB? If so then say so i can get one!
I keep waiting for a more grown up approach from Nintendo but they seem to be stuck in the 90's. THINGS HAVE MOVED ON!
Im angry at the people who clearly watched the show prior to it being shown to insure wow factor!
In a world of VR, 4K, new engines, etc etc did nintendo really think that presentation would hold up?????
I even watched the Tree House event after, (my friends understandable were asleep) and i looked at miyamotos face and even he looked bored and unhappy.
THIS IS ALL WE CAN HOPE FOR NOW.......
That behind closed doors they are showing NX to a very select few industry experts and 3rd partys trying to win developers back with a decent, powerful new console/gaming machine.
I still love Nintendo and we all have bad days at work but it's kinda continued for a while now.
This is your verbal warning Nintendo, this will NEVER happen again!

Totally agree. Especially after Silent Hills, which had so much amazing potential, was abruptly and stupidly aborted by Konami. After the new Fatal Frame and Corpse Party games release this year, I just don't know where I'm going to get the creeps I need.

I suppose I can always go back to the PS2 and its treasure trove of creepy horror games.

Did you guys watch all of Nintendo's E3 content? (Smash Direct, Nintendo World Championships? I saw you guys skipped the treehouse Live stuff) I found the Smash Direct and World Championships were very enjoyable, even if the NWC didn't have much in the way of new content.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Well, I would recommend checking the Nintendo YouTube channel, I heard they pisted a new Fatel Frame trailer with Fall 2015 release planned. Nintendo doesn't do everything through their 1 presentation like the others, they spread it out more.

I might be wrong, but I believe Nintendo went into this Digital Event saying it was going to focus on games coming out this year, so it wasn't much of a surprise that nothing big in 2016 was announced. Of course the games we already knew about looked great so its not like there is nothing coming out, but I think the big issue for most people is the lack of any info for 2016. You would think they would have something for early 2016 and would have teased them a little. Maybe they are saving the early 2016 announcements for a Nintendo Direct later this year.

That said the games they announced for 2015 were underwhelming(at best). Mario Tennis, Skylanders Amiibo and Animal Crossing Amiibo. Don't understand not having Devil's Third or Fatal Frame as part of the Event. Just seems like they put very little thought into the actual presentation.

It definitely seems like they are winding down the Wii U. To be honest, I kind of hope they are moving more of the development resources and games to the new system. I'm not expecting anything big on the Wii U for 2016 beyond Zelda. I think they'll have some smaller games here and there and we'll likely see some HD remasters. I have a hard time believing they will be able to support 3 consoles given the issues they are having providing support to 2 consoles.

You're exactly right about it being force on late 2015 and early 2016 games. Kinda wish they didn't do that honestly.

That might have been a solid theory if they were all for 2015, but you also have Jan-May 2016 titles as well. Mark my words; these are the last games coming to this generation of Nintendo platforms.

Pretty much. The currently announced games all come out by August 2016 or so, then E3 or an earlier conference gears us all up for the NX in November and new games. Namely the big games that were missing from today's show.

Iwata's first statement said focus on 2015 titles. Trinen and Iwata later changed that statement to 2015/early 2016.

What I thought was interesting is how it ended up that they had basically the same amount to talk about for 3DS and Wii U. It may have simply been a case of them wanting to show just as much for 3DS as they are for Wii U. Which they did. It's just that there are about twice as many titles coming to the Wii U this year compared to the 3DS. Also interesting to note that other than Chibi Robo and Metroid all of the 3DS titles are built on something that's already out.

Not saying it looks good for the Wii U having nothing there for 2016 because it certainly doesn't. But given we don't know what 2016 will bring and the possibility that they were just wanting to spread their time evenly? It doesn't look that good for the 3DS either. I mean there were four new games announced for next year which is nice but for the rest of this year where they HAD to announce stuff? Doesn't look as solid as the Wii U. Hell, on their info-graphic they had to remove big Wii U titles just to make it kinda look like they were even.

I expect the 3DS to get replaced around the same time Wii U does (probs next November), but it'll make a much more successful legacy platform. That graphic includes a few multiplatform 'family games' for Wii U, which aren't really made for handhelds anymore. There's also 'Amiibo Festival' and some dubious-looking 3DS games.

But it would be a mistake not to mention the huge 2 Monster Hunter and 2 Yo-Kai watch games that'll probably make their way over here in some capacity, and, failing that, sell millions in Japan.
