Topic: Was this E3 the final nail in the coffin for the Wii U?

@MegaJack

No, actually either Iwata or Reggie said the exact opposite today within the first 10 minutes of the Digital event.

He said "This year is all about transformation, we are expanding into theme parks, cell phones, and many other ventures. We will also go into more information on NX, our next dedicated games platform, next year"

That sentence not only names NX as a dedicated games platform, but specifically seperates it from the cell phone ventures mentioned earlier in the comment.

I love the way people are saying Nintendo's called it quits for the Wii U. Just because of an underwhelming E3 conference.
What's even more amusing is the so called fact that 'Nintendo's switching their big guns to the NX.'
As Ralizah said, Acts of the Drama Queen.

What games did they announce for the Wiiu that's actually worth it? Nothing just the same things we knew about it shows Nintendo is leaving the Wiiu and focusing on the next big thing. If they weren't they would have more games for the Wiiu then what they shown at this event. But they didn't mark my words you're not going to see the Wiiu next year. And really why release new games on a dying plattform? Why not give the system a strong launch? Why not give it a chance to sell?

Yes, with NX coming probably next year, they are at a very crucial juncture. THIS decision; "Focus our next 1.5 years on making the Wii U go out with a bang, or getting enough software ready to start NX out with a bang" They do NOT have enough manpower to do both. Which do YOU think is the wiser decision for the company? Honestly...

The dissapointment is mostly around no news about Zelda U, and nothing about Metroid, or any other new game.

Yes. Splatoon does sell quite a lot, but I think it's to late. Next years E3 will be about the NX (and presumably mobile, yuck).

Maybe so, but the fact that Nintendo did not show anything new and juicy doesn't necessarily equal the fact that Nintendo has shifted all their game to the NX.. TBH, it's not like anyone knows that Nintendo's making a F-Zero or a Metroid(for a console), so why the downright claim?
Until... I don't know, someone infiltrates Nintendo HQ and leak what the company's doing, saying 'all games have gone to the NX' is just... somewhat baseless.

God first.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say that it's not quite as dire as people think. For sure, the fact that a lot of the Wii U content was anounced combined with the fact that they didn't talk about anything beyond mid 2016? Killed the Wii U hype. The fact that we got new Zelda, Metroid, Animal Crossing and Paper Mario but none of them were the big Wii U titles we wanted? That was just salt in the wounds. But there are still just as many Wii U titles on the horizon as there are for 3DS. We just knew about them all.

That said before this I thought the NX was almost definitely a new handheld. It made sense across the board and the fact that there wasn't much for the 3DS kinda sealed the deal. Now I'm not as sure. Whatever it is though it's pulling development resources away from both the 3DS AND the Wii U.

I thought the conference was too much Amiibo-centric. I can understand that because they are selling like hot cakes and they want people to get them while they are hot. That's the only out I can come up with to justify for the lack of WiiU content. Nintendo has still an ace up the sleeve with Nintendo Directs though - those usually offer a lot of surprises. I am tired of relying every year on E3 for my gaming hype, I mean, the gaming world doesn't necessarily end with E3.

Top-10 games I played in 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - Rogue Legacy (PS3) - Fallout 3 (PS3) - Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Guns of Boom (MP) - Sky Force Reloaded (MP) - ...

The next year is lacking in system selling Wii U games, but games like Mario Kart 8, Smash, and Splatoon are very popular online. The Wii U lacks what past Nintendo systems have had, like Animal Crossing, a Mario game focused on exploration, and an original Zelda, but it has brought many innovative games to the table. Xenoblade X, Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem (or whatever it's called now), and Star Fox all look fantastic, but I doubt they will become mainstream. Mario Maker and Yoshi's Woolly World are the only likely hits, and the Skylanders amiibo might entice some younger players.

Well you're not wrong there. 3rd parties have abandoned the Wii U and now it seems even Nintendo is.

Yes, because all those games we knew about suddenly no longer exist.

Exactly, just because only a few games were shown at E3, doesn't mean Nintendo doesn't have any other new games in store for us over the next 12 months. I don't recall seeing Dr. Mario Mario: Miracle Cure at E3 last year. I don't believe they showed Tipping Stars either. They've still got that robot boxing prototype game that they showed off last year, we don't know what is happening with that, could easily be released over the next year.

I should be seeing Armikrog before the year is out

I honestly wanted to just have a title, not even picture of the title, but just a mention of what Retro Studios is working on! Without that I feel that they are ditching the Wii U support and Nintendo told them to scrap their Wii U planned game and start on an NX launch game.

Just listing this out so I can get an understanding of what is actually on the horizon:

2015 - Wii U

  • Yoshi's Woolly World
  • StarFox 0
  • Super Mario Maker
  • Mario Tennis Ultra Smash
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X
  • Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival (ugh)
  • Fatal Frame
  • Devil's Third

2015 - 3DS

  • Zelda: Triforce Heroes
  • Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash
  • Yo-Kai Watch
  • Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer (ugh)
  • Sonic Boom (ugh)
  • PokeĢmon Super Mystery Dungeon

2016 - Wii U

  • Genei Ibun Roku X FE aka SMTxF (2016)
  • Mario & Sonic (2016)
  • Zelda U (2016, we hope)

2016 - 3DS

  • Hyrule Warriors (Q1)
  • Fire Emblem Fates (2016)
  • Metroid Prime Federation Force (2016)
  • Mario & Luigi Paper Jam (Spring 2016)
  • Bravely Second: End Layer (2016)

So what, they just talked about 7 of the more imminent releases for both? Or is that actually what there is for both? Because other than the obvious fact that we knew basically everything there was for the Wii U it's lineup is arguably stronger and more immediate. Does that mean they're dumping the Wii U early? Well maybe. It could also mean that they thought they could get away with not announcing anything of substance for Wii U given the amount they'd already announced. Either way objectively it looks pretty thin for both.

Yes, the WiiU is in its twilight, Nintendo is moving console development on to NX, and they are certainly not replacing the 3DS line with a new portable given all of the new games shown for 3DS.

You know that NX isn't a home console, right? The home console market is dead in Japan, and NX is addressing just that. Read the latest investor report docs.

The appropriate response to the realization that the console market is dead in Japan is to stop making consoles for Japan and start making them for the rest of the world as Iwata suggested in the Q&A. America is 50% of the console market-- they have to make a console for that market.

I don't think it killed the console. They just completely screwed up their Digital Event. They wanted to focus on 2015, I thought that was a good idea, to prevent delays like Zelda. You know, when games are announced way too early. But I take that back, focus on new stuff, not games that I have seen multiple times already. There was just nothing exciting this year, spin-off games and games we already knew about.

@Jason723 To be fair, we knew about Yokai Watch since 2013.

Agreed. I think the focus was TOO immediate. Unless they have some huge first-party juggernaut like Mario or Zelda on the immediate horizon, it's better to just show people what you're working on that they'll actually get excited about.

If we also consider that several Wii U games that we KNOW are coming out soon didn't even make it in to the Direct, it points to the Direct being a poorly organized mess, and little more.

Exactly. I think there is still strong support behind Wii U. They just didn't convey that well.
All they had to do:

Show Devils Third
Show Fatal Frame
Show gameplay/another trailer of Zelda U (even short)
Show a teaser tiny teaser for Retro's game
Show Mother 1and then show Mother 3 and say it will come in the future. Just future.

Then everybody would have said they "won" E3. It is a matter of style not substance.

Fatal Frame, Yoshi, Devils Third, skylanders because of the cooperation, Tennis, Xenoblade X, Zelda U, Starfox Zero, Mario Maker, AC game... That's already 10 games you don't kill a console like that. When they killed the Wii they barely had a couple of games. People went nuts here. They just came with DLC for Mario kart, smash bros, hyrule warriors, not to mention Splatoon which is just starting.... Give me a break ha.

I'm kinda in the same boat. At this point I'm looking at the releases on the horizon and am keeping my eye on....

  • Super Mario Maker (Wii U)
  • Yoshi's Woolly World (Wii U)
  • Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash (3DS)
  • Batman Arkham Knight (PC)
  • StarFox 0 (Wii U)
  • Mario Tennis (Wii U)
  • Xenoblade Chronicles X (Wii U)
  • Fatal Frame (Wii U)
  • Doom (PC)
  • Final Fantasy VII (PC, hopefully)
  • Rise of the Tomb Raider (PC, eventually)
  • Mirror's Edge Catalyst (PC)
  • Cuphead (PC, indie title but damn. The style)
  • Star Wars Battlefront (PC)
  • Metroid Prime: Federation Force (3DS)
  • Zelda (Wii U)

They compliment each other well

Not at all. I have six possibly seven games on the way and that is before I attempt to track down a pip boy addition of fallout 4. No system has every single game be right for one gamer but the deny the game's existence and impact on others is shortsighted. But if people want to see the worst in something that is all they will ever find. Since I game to have FUN and I have very limited free time...I try not to do that. Makes me a happier gamer overall.
