If I get what I want on my list this year, the hour it'll be updating will force me to have a reason to play NSMB2 for an hour, because I'm sure I'll be playing Wii U all week if I get one.

Awww... How touching. Haha. Every single thing I ever buy is used by everyone at my house, so a gift to myself is a gift to everyone around me as well in a way. Plus, I bought it on launch day not as gift.

They're probably just afraid their network won't handle it when everyone hooks up their new Wii U x-mas morning. It's not as though the system can't update in the background while you start playing it.
Why not make sure the next shipment of Wii Us are already updated? I agree the advice is okay for those already on the market, but I'll be damn disappointed if future Wii U console shipments still need to be updated after being bought.

There will often times be an update in-between the packaging and the time that somebody hooks it up in their living room.

I still find it hilarious that that was Nintendo's stance and then games like Other M and Skyward Sword had glitches that could've easily have been fixed with updates.
Wii U consoles are going to be shipped w/ the updates sometime next year, but even after that, there are going to be more updates after that. An update could have to be made to activate the update for all we know... If you guys are really disappointed from a couple updates, just imagine how PS3/Xbox 360 owners feel. There's probably been at least a 100 updates for those consoles, all being different lengths, but still alot of time overall. I think it's becoming more apparent to update questioners/critics that more powerful consoles just need to be updated regardless. It's just a standard.

I could have sworn that PSN going down for months, and constant updates were worse. Oh ya, and/or paying for Xbox Live. Download in background, or wait and have some pie. Has anyone upgraded to Windows 8 lately?

I have a PS3, and alot of the updates are long for small things. As for traffic jams not being as bad as a wreck, I completely agree.
