Took me an hour - I have BT's fibre-thingy so it's pretty fast.

One thing to note that narked me off quite a bit is that the system default power off setting doesn't seem to regard game downloads as activity and will shut your Wii U off midstream. I had gone out with my daughter after purchasing Nintendo Land which estimated a 40min. download time and clicked the "power off when done downloading" button.

I naturally assumed when I came home and found the machine off that it would have completed, fired it up to see no new game channel and when I chose the download manager (why it is it I can only access this by clicking the Home button on the Gamepad?) see that it was resuming a download only %55 complete! You'd think it would have let me know that clicking the button earlier would have no effect due to the current power management settings or (more intelligently) that the system wouldn't shut itself off in the middle of any downloads - not just system updates!

Needless to say I've disabled auto-power off completely to avoid a repeat incident. I guess it's to be expected with a system launch to have a few issues, but honestly if you're selling retail downloads I'd expect a little more sense!

I'm going to try the update again today when hopefully Nintendos servers won't be quite so busy. What did worry me was that yesterday I didn't get consistent messages when it wouldn't download the update. I did get about 40% of it downloaded before it stalled completely and I ran out of patience.
We had a good time playing New Super Mario Bros last night though. Bet my neighbours were fuming )

Well, everyone going onto the Internet ruined it and made my system fail to connect to server yesterday.
However, this morning it worked and it only took a few minutes. Usually went up by 1% at least every few seconds. No problems so far.
I have no plans to buy any retail games on the eShop, only download-exclusive ones, so the speed of that doesn't concern me as they are much smaller anyway so I know they won't have issues.

I've still not managed my update. For the first attempt when I start it off it appears to be doing it then it stops after a minute or two and says it cannot connect to the servers. After that I get the message that there is an error and the cannot connect to server and error messages keep alternating until I turn it off. I'm beginning to get a bit fed up now as the only thing I've managed to do so far is play a couple of games and I want to see what the rest of it can do.

I guess you can try taking it to a friend's house or something if they have a faster Internet speed? How fast is your Internet BTW? (Test it here)

For comparisons sake (not sure if it would help), it took me about 6 hours to download a 11 GB programme (Team Fortress 2) onto my computer at home at around 5Mbps according to the website. That speed was quite lower during the actual download though.

Our speed is pretty fast and Virgin has just upgraded it so it's not quite lightning fast but not far off. I know the U can connect to the internet because I did the connection test and it was fine. I've even tried deleting everything and starting again just in case I had done something stupid on Friday when I was setting it up, but it's exactly the same result. I'll have to phone Nintendo tomorrow and see what they say. Wondering if I can have the update on a pen drive or something for me to install.

I've just done the speed test thing and it said 9.65 mbps which seems reasonable really, or am I thinking wrong and it should be a lot higher. I know web pages and suchlike open really fast so I thought it was ok.

I'll try it again later. We don't use a wifi router from Virgin Media. We use the one with a wire and Apple Airport for the wifi network. It works for everything else though so I'm thinking it isn't causing any problems for the U.

Virgin Media's minimum package is 30Mb now, but without a Superhub you would only be getting 20Mb. If you are only getting 10Mb on your line it indicates that you have the usual Virgin Media problem of over subscription in your area which can can hinder your speed and stability of connection. Try the update early in the morning rather than the peak times of around 6pm to 12pm.

mine took a little over twelve hours with countless disconnects. i ended up sleeping next to the game pad so i can just hit the ok button so it would reconnect and continue. Very frustrating, but! after everything was set up i was back to being happy/excited!

Yippee, update finally done after struggling all weekend. I was beginning to think I had a faulty unit. Am moving house next week and instead of being on an estate I'll be in a street with only 4 houses so any future updates should be easier as long as I can connect to Nintendos servers. I can now start to enjoy my U.

Day one update took me a massive 3.5 hours, at night, with really good download speeds, the wait sucked, had a shower and a shave, cooked food, went to the shops, dozed off for an hour and still had to wait for what seemed forever.
Trine 2 took two hours to download too. :,(

BT says they're on course to 76Mbps by year end (2013) and I'm apparently eligible for a boost to 35Mbps when my contract comes up for renewal next March. I think upload will double from 3Mbps to 6. If I ever decide to do any online gaming I'll be set!

It took me about 45 minutes with download and installation. It was about the same as it took me to download Trine 2. People like to make a big problem out of nothing.

I really don't call struggling to get the update for 3 days a big problem out of nothing.

For some reason, my Wii U with WiFi on and less than 2 feet away from my wireless router only gets about 4Mbps. Less than that with the LAN adapter. I find this extremely odd, as my computer connected in a room on the opposite side of the house via ethernet cable is getting almost 30Mbps.

My router and wifi set up is in the spare room and I get faster speeds when I use my MacBook in the living room than I do in the kitchen which is directly underneath the room with the wifi set up. I think sometimes you can be too close to the set up for it to be practical. Having said that my iMac is only three feet or so away from the wifi set up and that gets lightning speeds as a rule.
