@Shingi_70 Platinum is a 2nd party developer

"Second party developer is a colloquial term used by gaming enthusiasts and media often used to describe two different types of game development studios:
Independently-owned studios who take development contracts from the platform holders and what they produce will usually be exclusive to that platform.
Studios who are partially or wholly owned by the platform holder (also known as a subsidiary) and what they produce will usually be exclusive to that platform.
In reality, the resulting game is first party (since it is funded by the platform holder who usually owns the resulting IP), but the term helps to distinguish independent studios from those directly owned by the platform holder. These studios may have exclusive publishing agreements (or other business relationships) with the platform holder, while maintaining independence. Examples are Insomniac Games (which previously developed games solely for Sony's PlayStation platforms as an independent studio) and Game Freak, (which primarily develops the Nintendo-exclusive Pokémon game series)."

Nintendo never owned those Rare-characters and properties, Nintendo owned a bit of Rare, but they were never fully acquired. Therefor Rare maintained the copyright within their own grasp. Microsoft though bought the entire studio and hence is the sole owner of those Rare franchises now. Not the developer in itself.

But yes, these things of course varies. Nintendo own The Wonderful 101 since it is a Nintendo-production. Just as Demons Souls from From Software is Sony property - hence From Software had to make the sequels beneath a new, different, brand. (Dark Souls, that is).

Quite simple there officially is three ways to produce games. Firstparty (in this case a Nintendo-financed production, outsourced or developed internally, it makes no difference), third-party (a completely unrelated company produces) and then there are the times when these meet for different deals. Bayonetta 2 is a first-party production, but the IP in it-self is third party. Nintendo merely have financed the completion of the game and have a deal with Sega to work as publisher. How that deal looks remains to be seen. Of course.

Microsoft did the same thing with Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Gaiden II but that didnt really stop Tecmo from making "remakes" for Playstation later on.

As long as the costs to port the 360/PS3 versions of multiplatform games don't exceed the potential income i believe Ubisoft and Activison will release their games on the WiiU. That would be AC, CoD and their likes. Games like Skylanders, Just Dance or the Lego aames will get released regardles anyway.
EA is gone and won't come back. The only EA game i think might have a chnace to get released on WiiU could be ME2. The only reason behind this thought is that the game will not sell as well as EA would like and will bring it to more platforms to boost sales.
Besides that most 3rd party games will be indie titles and titles that Nintendo orders/finances and through this becomming first party games.

I think you hit the nail on the head, Activision and Ubisoft will at least give some support, “only” if they are also making Xbox 360 and PS3 versions.

Now here is the problem, the Wii U still has about 3 ½ to 4+ more years in it’s life span, when Ubisoft and Activision start focusing entirely on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC crowd……..what now? Those titles will be mostly be too demanding for the Wii U’s hardware unless you want to make some big compromises.

If the Wii U does not make a substantial rebound in 2014, and the Xbox One and PS4 are selling significantly more, say good bye to any third party support outside of indies and one or two exclusives that Nintendo shoves out some more money for and most likely publishes.

Although we still most likely will get "Just Dance" and "Skylanders", etc., for sure.

@JaxonH: I think the idea of a killer app is very alive and well, and isn't going away any time soon. Sure you can be interested in other games on the console, both already available and forthcoming, but you're reluctant to buy until you see that one big game, the essential killer app of the console, the big game that everyone plays or wants to play. For example for many people that might be a new Zelda on Wii U, and I know for several people in terms of the PS3 that it was Metal Gear Solid 4 that pushed them to buy a PS3 at the time. I've always seen a killer app as the primary game that you decide to buy a console for, and more frequently then not, other people buy the console for. Now they may not always sell as well as you might expect a killer app to sell, but they still certainly do their part in moving a commendable amount of units off store shelves. Also worth noting that games like Gran Turismo and Halo 3 pushed about 10 million units each, which are well into what you would expect for killer app territory. Hell I know I bought a 360 pretty much exclusively to play Halo at the time, and then later found more to enjoy with friends on the console, but for a time Halo was all I played.

Also a slight point of clarification, GTA V sold over 20 million units across both consoles, probably closer to 30 million now, and the distribution of sales was about equal on either console, so GTA V sold more than a couple million. Just a small pet peeve of mine when people say a couple and it's actually more than 2, haha.

It will be interesting to see where the numbers are for each console next year at this time...... I'm sure XBone/PS4 will have more users- but will it be substantially more? It wouldn't surprise me at all if the numbers were closer than you think.

All the HD ports that were put on XBLA and PSN for 360 and PS3 would be nice fits for Wii U during the upcoming droughts. Just copy the TV image to the Wii U gamepad, the Wii U has dedicated software for that. However, because of the very small market, many devs not having Wii U Dev Kits, possibly higher royalty fees, and lack of an HDD for many if not most users, I don't expect many.

I don't recall saying GTA5 only sold a couple million copies. I do, however, remember saying it only helped sell a couple million CONSOLES, if even that much
