Third-party werent kidding when they said that they would give Wii U a chance to prove itself until the end of the year. If it wasnt for Watch Dogs being postphoned there wouldnt be a single major third-party release for the platform in 2014.
There will be Lego-games and there will be shovelware such as Winx Infinity: Dance Party and Amazing Spider-Man 2.. but no, the "tumbleweed rolls through" post above is very correct.
There seems to be plenty of interesting releases on the eShop however. Thats something.

That's sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy, though, huh? They want to wait to see if the Wii U does badly, then part of the reason it doesn't do well is due to lack of third party games.

That's partly true, but Nintendo hasn't done much to court 3rd parties and non- Nintendo gamers to the platform either. That includes releasing a killer App, which they have not.

For some, Square Enix for an example, who decided to hold Deus Ex until Q4 when Nintendo allegedely would turn things around. But this was not the case for most publishers. Most publishers jumped shipped early on - while some, those who said they would give Wii U a fair chance until the end of the year, such as Warner Bros and Ubisoft were pretty active and fullfilling on that promise - despite having to make a lot of cuts (in content, functionality and DLC support) in some cases - since the console still was in the market position that it was and is in.
Well, at least Watch Dogs was postphoned. Maybe Mario Kart 8 will give Wii U a boost in the spring that also makes the spring release of WD more giving for Ubisoft - who might take a second look at the numbers after that. A situation that would not have played out the same if it had been released this November.

Killer app. Everyone talks about a killer app like all consoles live or die off of one game. It's just not the case. I don't care how killer an "app" is (can we just call it a game cause that's what it is, not some smartphone application), it's never going to be enough to carry an entire platform. It's just not. What's THE biggest release on PS3 this entire generation? Last of Us? GTA5? Guess what, each of those in all their "killer-app" glory only mustered a couple million sales each, of which only a tiny portion actually bought a console for. Heck, even NSMBU broke a million sales at launch. No, people need to get this killer app theory out of their heads and flush it down the toilet where it belongs.
But even if you do subscribe to that false theory, no one can claim Wii U doesn't have a killer app yet. It has several. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, New Super Mario Bros U and Super Mario 3D World are all franchises known for breaking all kinds of records. And yet, no cigar. Why? Because one game doesn't change ANY console's fortunes. It might boost sales some, but it takes the collective weight of a robust library of attractive games to sell a console. Every game does it's part by adding a little more to the allure of the console, and with each new game, exponentially more customers go out and buy a console.
However, there is a threshold to be reached, where sales begin increasing at an INCREASING RATE. That's the event horizon, where gamers can no longer resist the console due to the accumulated library of games. The console's main bulk of its lifespan will then be spent until sales finally get to a point where they increase but at a DECREASING RATE. This is when it's time to wrap it up and start thinking about next gen.
All have sinned and fall short of Gods glory. Wages of sin is death. Romans
God so loved the world He sent His only Son- whoever believes on Him has eternal life. Unless you believe, you will die in your sins. Whoever believes, rivers of living water flow within them. John
I think one of the reasons that games like Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Super Mario 3D World and New Super Mario Bros. U isnt driving console-sales as they could/should is because people are already getting the same or similar experiences on their Nintendo 3DS. Especially looking at Japan where home-video consoles are pretty much the left-over market this should be nothing but a hard-cold fact.
With killer-app, however, people are often referring to a game that is a "console-seller". Such has become quite the rarity these days. And the discussion itself problably comes from different times when consoles launched with new experiences such as Super Mario 64, Wii Sports and Halo: Combat Evolved.
Today consoles have a tendency to more sell on brand AND the complete package.
Watch Dogs
The Lego Movie Videogame
Winx Infinity: Dance Party 101
The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Lego: The Hobbit
Skylanders 4 (likely)
Just Dance 2015 (likely)
Part 2:
Sega is signed on for one more Sonic game on Wii U I believe. That's technically third-party, at least depending on if Nintendo publishes it in your region like Lost World in Europe/Australia. Still, Nintendo's funding those projects.

As long as the costs to port the 360/PS3 versions of multiplatform games don't exceed the potential income i belive Ubisoft and Activison will release their games on the WiiU. That would be AC, CoD and their likes. Games like Skylanders, Just Dance or the Lego aames will get released regardles anyway.
EA is gone and won't come back. The only EA game i think might have a chnace to get released on WiiU could be ME2. The only reason behind this thought is that the game will not sell as well as EA would like and will bring it to more platforms to boost sales.
Besides that most 3rd party games will be indie titles and titles that Nintendo orders/finances and through this becomming first party games.
Nope. Absolutely nothing. @CountWavula The Wonderful 101 is a first party game. Nintendo owns the IP.
How? It was created by Platinum Games. Nintendo doesn't own Banjo Kazooie, Conker, Viewtiful Joe, or any number of other characters/IPs that appeared on their various consoles as exclusives, so how is W101 any different?
Does Nintendo 'own' Bayonetta as well?
You don't don't seem to get IP ownership do yo?
Nintendo at one point owned Banjo and all of Rare's IPs until Microsoft bought them owning them.
The Wonderful 101 is being made by Platfnuim games but is not only funded by Nintendo but Nintendo owns the IP making it a first party game.
Nintendo is funding Bayonetta 2, but Sega owns the IP meaning its still a third party game.
Quantum Break is a first party game depsite the developer remedy not being owned by microsoft.
As far developers go there are three teirs
First Party which is an internal studio (EAD Tokyo, Naughty Dog, Lionhead)
Than there are third party studios like Sega, Take Two, etc
2nd party developers are third party developers that the first party has a strong partnership or works with alot.
Sigh
Nintendo at one point owned
WAT!
