I'm unsure of the original source of the interview at this time, but this
appeared recently on my twitter. I'm trying to find the source, and will update once I have. Anyway, It seems Nintendo had one more trick up their sleeve for E3.

As long as we get a 2D one. It's been far too long.
“A thing may be too sad to be believed or too wicked to be believed or too good to be believed; but it cannot be too absurd to be believed in this planet of frogs and elephants, of crocodiles and cuttle-fish.”

Personally, I just want a game that can wipe the stain Other M left on the series away...I don't care how many they make or whether they're 2D or 3D or both...just so long as they don't make a game that bad again. Heck, I'd take another QuakeHunters over that. Just don't ruin this series, Nintendo. It's the only one you have left that I still hold dear.
I've been waiting for a Prime style Metroid for Wii U since the console was announced, the gameplay lends itself very well to the Gamepad and in my mind was a total no brainer for demonstrating the value of the Gamepad. But better late than never, I can't wait to see this.
I also like the 2D style too, so I'll probably get the 3DS version as well. It'd be interesting to see a continuation of Fusion, there's some interesting changes in storyline and gameplay that could come of a sequel.
i'll bet you 1 mario gold coin that they're both already in development
then I bet 1 green rupee they are still in planning phase
goodbyes are a sad part of life but for every end there's a new beggining so one must never stop looking forward to the next dawn

I'm not saying that it's in development, but I feel like the demand for Retro to make another Prime-style Metroid game is too great to be ignored. They probably don't want to be branded as "The Metroid Studio" and understandably want to try new things and new projects (this probably had some weight in their decision to make DKCTF). If Other M hadn't dropped the ball like it did, people probably wouldn't care as much and cling to the idea of Retro's return. With Metroid, players went from a really good experience to a mediocre/just okay one.
I'm looking forward to whatever projects they come out with nonetheless. With confirmation of Star Fox's development and of discussions of the future of Metroid... that really just leaves F-Zero hanging (I still think Sega should do another game).
The sentiment that the next Metroid should come and correct Other M is the only reason why I might've liked for them to not make a new entry. I take this statement much like the statements made on Pikmin 3 before the Wii U, just around to make fans happy that something is happening not that they will deliver on the statement anytime soon. Having two Metroid projects potentially being planned does worry me a bit, because I have my doubts that the Metroid fanbase now would even show up to support ONE new Metroid game much less two. Other M wasn't the final nail in the coffin, but continued declining sales for two future entries could very well be.
