I have an interesting problem and I have also somewhat solved it. My girlfriend was playing Paper Mario Color Splash which we got for christmas when the screen went completely black, no signal from the hdmi jack whatsoever. We then tried switching cables, we tried switching outputs on the television, we even tried changing the resolution on the television to see if we could get a spark of life, but the hdmi connection was as good as dead.
Please note that the console itself was still functional, the game continued as if nothing had happened and luckily, you can play it on the main controller so my girlfriend could keep on playing while I was playing around with the console and television.
I finally got image on my television and I will share with you how I did it, mostly if someone have a similar problem or if you can give me a better solution to my problem.
I have multiple consoles hooked in to my television but only two hdmi jacks, so I use one for my computer and the other one for my consoles, to make this manageable I have hooked all of my consoles up to a switch where I can choose what connection to run. It is thanks to this switch that I can get still use my WiiU, I noticed that if I started any of my other consoles while playing the WiiU, I got image, so my theory and conclusion is that my HDMI jack on my Wii U can no longer support my HDMI cable with power, therefore no image, but if I start up another console, it will supply both the HDMI connection with power and then I can get an image.

Hopefully this is helpful to someone and hopefully someone out there can tell me if there is another way around this.

PS. I've also contacted Nintendo support in Sweden about this and I will keep you updated if I get a response.

Honestly it sounds like more of an issue with your setup than with the Wii U. If it was an issue with the Wii U then no amount of fiddling around with your setup would have resolved it. It would be just be a dead signal. HDMI does sometimes have a bit of a habit of behaving strangely.

My signal sometimes makes clear lines appear on the screen, but a hard reset (holding the power button down for 5 seconds) works wonders. Dunno if it's because of HDMI?
