If you think gaming forums are bad you should look at some other places. If you follow some of the political hashtags on twitter there are bots people have created that just post FUD 24/7. Like three year old news articles presented in a way that makes you think it's news or some inane slur built to get a rise out of people. Or worse the teams of bots that flood a feed with the same articles purely so that nothing else can be seen. When people want to get their little thing noticed? They can, for a while.
Some dude who writes a post on a gaming site saying that the gaming platform that particular forum leans towards sucks? Has nothing on that. Which is why I just roll my eyes when people start accusing people of being a troll. It's not on the stuff some people do but a lot of the whine is usually about very, very trivial community disruption.
^ Yeah, believe it or not, gaming enthusiasts are some of the most civilized internet communities, from what I've seen. People argue, sometimes insult others, sometimes take things too personally, but the internet can be a much darker, crueler, more unforgiving place. Trolls aren't even the worst of it. Trolls are just bored kids who will find something else to do eventually. The worst is when a group of like-minded people rally together around a horrible, hateful idea and call themselves a community.

What actually happened to that guy? I noticed all his threads were deleted. He actually struck me as genuine, just incredibly annoying in his emphasis and probably a bit socially troubled.

I really don't agree on gaming enthusiasts at all. I dread to think what you're comparing them to!
I agree on the latter part though. The natural tendency for groups of people online to assemble into like minded communities where they create an echo chamber for their opinions is incredibly dangerous and also quite hideous to witness. I think it's deeply mistaken to imagine that it's based on the idea they're rallying around though, I don't think that's true at all. The idea or belief system is almost irrelevant.
For example, I'm a fairly vocal supporter of the animal rights movement. It's incredibly hard to suggest that that's in any way a bad idea. You could argue it's silly, a bit too emotional, or a poor use of attention, but it's very hard to argue that it's a position that does any harm. But I guarantee you, the exact same thing happens. There are some incredibly hideous corners in the community where people have complete hatred for "non-believers" and if you get enough of them together, you really could get a group of extremists who would kill people just for eating meat. That's not hyperbolic, people with that potential really do exist. It's not about the issue, it's about the pesonalities and the structure of authority within a community.
The real problem with most belief systems is that there are far too many people who will publicly denounce the extreme elements within their midst but are secretly happy they exist.
or they may choose to wax loquacious about how many times they slept with my mother

As @ogo79 said, the SNS-RZ-USA is a prime giveaway that it's not a legit retail cart.
And yes, he is (usually) always right, and he is (almost) the sexiest gamer out there (not counting me) ;)
I was playing my 5th level Paladin when my group was exploring some old ruins when through the dimly lit path we saw a troll up ahead. I quickly pulled out my +2 flamesword and charged out to confront the troll. I rolled my d20 and couldn't believe it I rolled a 20. Needless to say I split it right down the middle killing it instantly as it burst into flames.

Whenever they make the suggestion, the trick is to then talk about THEIR mothers with much more gruesome and horrific detail. Try it, they'll soon correct their behaviour.

*Addendem: I was going to try to find a demotivational about Lord of the Rings regarding Fan Fiction. Could not find any. Turns out that's hard to do when the fan fictions are already being played on the silver screen...

Yeah, the worst a fanatical Nintendo fan can do is maybe buy a console early or convince one of their friends to buy a console early. Maybe they'll convince themselves that a game is good despite the fact that it's not actually that good. Oh noes.
When it gets to more serious topics that sort of group think can actually be pretty bad. With the political stuff I've seen it lead to people posting particularly nasty stuff about opposing parties. Grotesque photoshopped images, multiple kinds of slander, threats of violence, misinformation and gossip. Then even more broadly ordinary people only follow the people they agree with which creates a sort of echo chamber where they only hear praise for their point of view. Happens on all sides and there's little you can do to change it.... other than trying to avoid falling into that trap yourself....

I once came across a troll one. This one was has been around since 1984 but I personally was introduced to him in '95. Dealt with the bugger for a year or 2 then tossed him off to the side. This dude's constant laughing got on my nerves and sadly was part of the experience back in '95. I eventually got passed him and didn't run into again until just last week. I'm telling you he's the oldest effing troll in the world. Frickin duck hunt dog....
