I'm curious as to why no one has tried to do touch screen aiming in first person ,and third person shooters on Wii U. It worked well on DS don't see why it wouldn't work on Wii U. Control movement with the left analog stick, shoot with LZ. The Dpad could handle different other functions such as reload, switching weapons. In other words the added buttons on one side of the Wii U Pad could make it more plausible than on the DS.

Touch screen controls in those games was mostly used as a way to get around the fact that it lacked a second stick. The Wii U has a second stick so it's unnessisary for games that work better with dual sticks. Ontop of that the screen is harder to reach and the GamePad is heavier which would make it more awkward than it already is on the (3)DS.

So I think it's fine enough for games that work with just the touch screen or can't work any other way. I don't think it should ever be used in scenarios where the second stick would work better. For example a Wii U version of Kid Icarus? No way I'd be happy with that if it used the touch screen as the only input.

It's not that it can't be done, but...

Oh, skywake's explained it well enough.

I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.

Wouldn't work, because of the large gamepad which is to heavy to hold in one hand (at least for me) and the seperated screens.

I actually prefer touch aiming to using a second analog.

Analog aiming is either to slow or too fast.

this.
but my favorite aiming are Wii pointer and the Gyro aiming in RE:R(but this one won't work in games you're aiming all the time)

I'm not talking about touch aiming being the only control option. I'm suggesting it as an alternative control method. I personally like Wii remote IR aiming ,and touch screen aiming better than an analog stick as you can put the reticle right where you want it right away rather than waiting for it to move with the stick.

That is one thing that has always made me like games on Wii/Wii U better than the other systems is the various ways to play the same games with different control schemes.

I honestly wish more Wii U games that are currently out would of gave more alternate control schemes.

i wouldn't mind it. and it wouldn't be a problem to do either, just set the gamepad down on your lap or lay down with your knees up and it would be fine. i also wish they would leave legacy controls an option for all games, and that it wasn't so hard to have the option to allow both first and third person cameras.

Because I'm left handed.

Sure, I learned to cope with Kid Icarus Uprising with different control schemes, but if a developer makes a game controlled with the circle pad and the touch screen, I wouldn't be a happy camper. And don't you dare suggest the Circle Pad Pro.

No. Touch controls are awful. If you want to contantly have to stop and lift up your hand get it to the other side of the screen in the middle of aiming, you may as well use a freaking mouse. And before you say "adjustable controls" if you had adjustable controls, you wouldn't need Touch screen aiming, you could just adjust the dual stick controls to your needs (like you can do in every FPS made in the last 5 years, you lazy SoB's).

Wolfred i don't think we need to stoop down to calling people that prefer different control options for their games lazy. Thats rude man. Just because myself ,and others aren't fans of dual analog while liking alternatives like touch as well as IR aiming doesn't make them any less of a gamer than yourself.

I don't think touch aiming on the Game Pad would work as well as touch aiming does on their 3DS/DS handhelds. I think it would be much harder to get comfortable controlling such a game on a large controller.

Wii pointer or mouse are so much better than touch when it comes to aim as you never have to lift you hand up.

No matter how adjustable dual sticks can be, mouse will always be better. It is just better at translating movements, be they precise or huge, quick or slow. And this applies to touch and pointer as well.

To be fair though it depends on the game, I'm just talking about the typical first person shooter here. Touch Screens destroy everything else for something like a match 3 puzzle game. Something like Geometry wars (which I have played with all of these I think) works best with analogue sticks by a country mile. The DS version of Geometry wars I have I remember playing with the face buttons rather than the touch screen because I found even that was better.

When it comes to a shooter though... mouse has zero fatigue, zero shake, is quick and accurate. The Wii Pointer is quick, low fatigue and accurate but introduces a bit of shake. Analogue sticks are steady and comfortable but just aren't as quick or accurate. Touch screen controls are quick, don't have the shake and are accurate but are are the least comfortable.

Why exactly are touch FPS controls uncomfortable for you?

Honest question.

I personally, remember the controls and graphics being the best thing about Metroid Prime Hunters on the DS (the only fps game I played in the console). Then again, I can comfortably play Pokemon on my 2DS with a single hand while I eat or do other stuff.

@Moorpheel
By no means am I against touch screen controls as a work around. Personally I was fine with playing Kid Icarus Uprising on the 3DS unlike some. At first it was uncomfortable but once I worked out how to hold it I could play it without much issue. However even then the most comfortable position involved supporting the right side of the 3DS with my pinky finger. It worked but I could see it working better with almost any other input method. The problem was that no other input method was really available. I mean they gave you a stand in the box so I don't think it's a particularly good ad for touch screen controls being superior.
