Topic: To Transfer or Not to Transfer: My Wii U Dilemma

First of all, let me say that I hope this doesn’t duplicate too many other threads. I tried looking around for one, but didn’t have much luck. Of course, it’s kind of hard without a search feature for the forums (or is there one and I’m completely oblivious to it? I’m not on the forums much.)

At any rate, this concerns my own situation and I wanted others opinions on it.

So here’s the deal: I’ve had my Wii U since November, but have not officially done the Wii to Wii U transfer. I’ve moved a few data files via SD card for games I wanted to play, but that’s it. I’m now considering doing it for various reasons, but I’m leery about it due to the issues some people have had as well as a few other things. I’ve written out a pros and cons list, and it seems like there’s an obvious answer based on that, but I wanted others to weigh in with their thoughts.

Below is that list:
PROS

  • All content in one place
  • Upgrading Super Mario World (only game I have that currently is available for an upgrade)
  • Take advantage of SMB2 sale and other similar sales in the future (this kind of ties in with the above, so I don’t know if it counts as a separate pro)

CONS

  • Downloaded games no longer playable on Wii
  • GameCube controllers not useable on Wii U (not so good for Mario Kart or SSB)
  • No Club Nintendo coins on new games purchased on Wii U
  • Lost Winds not transferrable (one of my favorite games on the Wii—granted I haven’t ever replayed it)

Personally I haven't bothered, because I like my Wii games to be on my Wii. It's mainly for legacy reasons - in a decade or so's time, will I want to dig out my Wii U to play Wii games? Will I have my Wii U still? etc

Valid point, though I guess I should have pointed out that the disc drive on my Wii is dead. I've thought about sending it in for repairs, but I'm unsure if I want to spend the money, at least, not at this point anyway.

Well that certainly complicates things! If you're not planning on getting another, then you may as well do a transfer. If nothing else, you can play all your Wii software in one place

Yeah, I guess I should have made it clear that I almost definitely will do the transfer at SOME point. I'm just not sure if now is the right time. As silly as it seems, I think the main thing holding me back is the Club Nintendo coins. If I'm going to download a game for my Wii, I'd like to get the coins for it...

Yeah if the disc drive doesn't work on the Wii I dont see the point in worrying about being able to use the GC controllers on Mario Kart Wii Or SSB, its not like you can unless you were talking about the VC games I couldn't really tell. But in all honesty you could just pick up the Wii U pro controller which works just as good IMO.

But yeah in the end its more of a convenient factor more than anything. I haven't transferred my stuff over from my Wii to my Wii U, I plan on keeping it on my Wii mainly cause I moved my Wii from the main TV to my man cave so if for example the Wii U or Xbox 360 or someone is watching a show, I can still play my Wii games.

Does anybody have any personal experiences about what they thought about the transfer? Another one of my concerns is that I've heard so many horror stories of people trying to transfer and then it messing up halfway through.

You only have Mario World... just buy the WIi U VC games when they come out if you want Club Nintendo Coins so bad. If your looking for Wiiware I say skip it and go Eshop games. There really isn't any "must haves" on there.

Super Mario World is the only VC game I have that is upgradable. I still don't have that many, but I wanted to clarify.
There are several games for VC that I've thought about getting, and I really don't know if I want to wait until Nintendo ever gets around to releasing them on the Wii U. As I said, I know the whole coin thing seems silly and insignificant, but it does factor in for me to a point.

You can still play them on the Wii... it's really the same thing. I just transferred everything and sold my Wii. Never looked back. It's basically like I still HAVE the Wii. Your CD drive doesn't work... it's not like you can do anything with it now (besides downloads). I honestly didn't care for the Gamecube controller. The L and R buttons are hard to press. The D-Pad is in an awkward spot. You know that thing's not gonna be around for ever, might as well get used to it now then later. Do you have a classic controller? I would rather wait for the games to come out VC, it will be cheaper in the long run and you'd still get Club Nintendo coins.

For Gamecube controllers, there's adapters that you can get from the internet.

Does anyone know if the game-play times transfer as well?

What do you mean? You're saves on the Wii, transfer, or if you have them on an SD card, just put the SD card in and load up the game.
It's like using a different disc, but using the memory card you always do.

No. They don't transfer. I just checked. Also, daily records on Wii get erased after 2 years or something anyway.

When I first bought my Wii U and I was performing the transfer, it messed up halfway through. But I just restarted, went back and tried again, and it worked fine; no harm done. I was just mad because it took a good hour, after already waiting an hour for the first update.

Based on what I've heard, it doesn't transfer since there is no Nintendo Channel on Wii Mode. I really wish they had built that kind of thing into the Wii directly...but at least the 3DS and Wii U have it. I've always fount it intriguing to look through my games on my 3DS and see what games I play the most or most often are.

Would it be smart to transfer items if I still plan to use my Wii has a GameCube player?

No problem. You're not insulting me!
I actually plan on doing that myself once I finally get around to getting my disc drive fixed. I have a component cable hooked up to my Wii, so Gamecube games look a ton better on there than on my actual GameCube.

Well, I thought about moving all of my VC games to my Wii U and having just my GameCube games on my Wii, but then I thought maybe it would be nice if I had VC games and GameCube games on my Wii and have my Wii U solely for new content... I don't know about that either, because I am already using SD cards on my Wii because I am out of space. So I totally get your dilemma.
