I think part of it lies with the fact that Nintendo owns so many different IPs, that there probably aren't that many ideas that none of their current franchises couldn't adopt (especially with such a versatile character as Kirby).
For example, I'm sure there is some sort of never before done idea for a platforming game, but I highly doubt it's so radical that neither Mario, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Wario, Yoshi, or Stafy would be able to accomodate such an idea. Sure, they could create a new character for it, but using a character they already have would only serve to cut development costs, and due to brand awareness, maximize potential sales (thus higher profit for Nintendo).
An example would be Kirby's Epic Yarn, which was initially concieved without the intention of being a Kirby game.
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
^Of course, to add on to that, sometimes, they seem to overestimate the versatility of their characters. Most notable case being Star Fox Adventures, objectively a very good game, resented for not being Star Fox.
This is a signature.
Link goes here now.
Screw you.
I'm not sure anyone gets what I'm saying if they're using Nintendoland as an example how Nintendo are already doing this.
I'm not talking about new kinds of games, I'm talking about new characters. I don't think Nintendo would consider any of the characters from The Last Story or Pandora's Tower or even Wonderful 101 to be theirs, even if they co-own the IPs and Xenoblade is part of the Xenosaga series? I guess... can you imagine characters from those games, or games like Pushmo and Dillon's Rolling Western to show up in a future Smash Bros?

Now I did not know that. I LOVED Kirby's Epic Yarn, easily in my top 10 Wii games. As much as I adore Kirby, I think it would have been really awesome to have used a new character for that one. Although on the other hand, if they're going to keep doing Yarn versions of other characters, then maybe it's for the best.

Definitely. It's very much expected.

Xenoblade is not part of the Xenosaga series, Nintendo has nothing to do with those. It's named like this because the creator is the same (the game was first called something like Monado: Beginning of the World or wtv), and I would definitely see Shulk as a character on Smash Bros.

Exactly. The battle between new and existing IP's was fought and won by Nintendo a long time ago. New IP's are exciting and I have to say it was one of the joys of being a Sega owner back in the day but Nintendo won out by mining the same veins ruthlessly.

pretty sure myamotos new games ment to be an all new ip
Nope its obviously Mole Mania 2.
You never know. Come to think of it, none of the recent Directs mentioned anything about Miyamoto's secret. I guess they want to keep that completely under wraps until E3? As long as it isn't something like Wii Music, I'm excited to find out what it is.

Hmm, maybe its me being naive, but I don't think they would like to stick to their established franchises much either.
Unfortunately, creating a new IP requires funds, and right now Nintendo is focusing on giving their hardware releases some stability. One could argue that such stability could come from new IPs (which is not a wrong assumption by any means I would say) but, unfortunately, sales numbers indicate that developing a new 2D Mario platformer will attract more players.
Maybe later? Then again, the Wii was financially successful and we did not see any new first-party franchises. Still, there were many 'risks' being taken I would say! We had a new Punch Out game, A Boy and his Blob and etc. which are not mainstream-appealing games, or at least weren't sold as such.
Either way, I would like new first-party franchises too, but some new and innovative franchises made their debut on Nintendo consoles (Professor Layton, Ace Attorney, The World Ends With You etc. etc. etc.)

Wut?
We got the whole Wii-franchise of games, Flingsmash, Xenoblade, ExciteTruck, Disastet: Day of Crisis, Captain Rainbow, Endless Ocean, Pandoras Tower etc.

My general suggestion for people wanting new IPs is to actually buy and talk about new IPs and just pretend Mario doesn't exist. If you really want innovation, don't talk about Mario, don't mention Mario, feign ignorance on the subject if asked. If you're in such a need for the industry to change, you have to at least put some level of effort in.

Bingo. If you want new franchises to take the spotlight, buy them. It's the only way to tell publishers that there needs to be more of this.

What? Mario isn't going anywhere; boycotting his games will just decrease Nintendo's profits. Not sure how that leads to new IPs.
Besides there's nothing to prevent them from coexisting so it's kind of a silly point if you ask me.
We got the whole Wii-franchise of games ExciteTruck
Excite Truck isn't a new franchise as it's apart of the Excite series: Bike, Truck and Bots.
Still a new IP though. Otherwise it'd be called ExciteBike. Luigi's Mansion is also considered a new IP, even though it originates from the Mario universe.
