Topic: Time for new IPs?

We all love Mario, Zelda, Metroid and the rest. It's great how many big anniversaries there have been in the last few years for Nintendo's classic characters. Am I the only one that would like to see them freshen things up a little? I know they have been creating 'new' brands with Wii Fit, Wii Sports and that sort of thing, and that's great, but what about some new Nintendo IPs for the core gamers? Has there been anything since Chibi-Robo on the Gamecube? And Pikmin before that. The DS had a few new names, Nintendogs and Elite Beat Agents, but again, they were more for that non-gamer sort of person they were trying to attract back then.

People bemoan the lack of originality on other systems, but there's been a lot of new IPs created by others in the last generation. Gears of War, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Uncharted, heck, even Call of Duty could be classed as a product of the last generation considering the first game was a low selling PC only title.

I'm not saying that Nintendo should try and create that sort of game, but some new characters and worlds would be nice. A 3D platformer that wasn't part of the Mario series for example. I'm sure they have people in their internal development team that could create a JRPG along the lines of Skies of Arcadia too. Nintendo still innovate with gameplay, but I'm really curious to see what they can do with brand new IPs instead of relying on characters and worlds that were around 25 years ago. I wouldn't want them to do these instead of Mario and Zelda, but alongside them. Does anyone else think it could be pretty exciting?

Well I do like the idea of new IP's but they are pretty risky I mean even with current IP nintendo has taken risks with them the paper mario series seems a good example; to mixed results and while I admit I did roll my eyes at the NSMB game after game, but then I also bought OOT on N64, played it again on GC with the bonus disk, then on VC and then on 3DS too; if they where to release yet another version couldn't promise I wouldn't buy that too, so I'm just as guilty of wanting more of what I like as anybody.

Nintendo's answer to Killzone, GTA, God of War, and Gears of War you mean? I think Nintendo is getting ready to make some shocking titles on that sort of level, but don't expect all the blood and obvious violence. Just imagine Starfox as possibly being Nintendo's Gears of War if they use the Assault gameplay style again. Kid Icarus could be more like God of War if they added more diversity in sword play. Zelda could be more like Skyrim having a huge world, and more gameplay options and custom options.
I'm not saying Nintendo should straight up copy Sony and Microsofts biggest games of PS3 and Xbox 360, but they do have some interesting ideas including violence that could be brought to light differently to suit their style.
Pikmin is basically slaying animals to benefit the character in the game, just for the record.

Nonono... definitely not saying they should try and make games like that. I was just using those as examples of new brands. I don't mean putting their characters in violent games, but rather, I want to see them make brand new characters. Expand their stable of franchises. I really love Nintendo's platformers, but there's only so many Mario games they can put out each generation. I'd love to see what they would come up with if they decided to make a new 3D platformer that's got brand new characters and a brand new world.

I do think that they said that a new IP is in the works, but they have higher piorities at the moment.

Anyway, I think that Nintendo have enough new IPs to get themselves though with only a few new ips every so often. The only reason it is rather noticable now is that nintendo has had a rough spot with the early 3DS period and went "Mario games sell, make more of them"

I understand what you mean, but IMO, none of those games were worth a purchase if you had one of the other games in the series.
I didn't like Uncharted 2, Dead Space 2, the Mass Effect series was only good after the first one, Bioshock 2, Killzone 2 was better than 3, and even Gears of War was crappy after the first one. They all added more gameplay options, but they were mainly the same game. If you had any Assissin's Creed from 2 onward, you really didn't need to buy any of them after that, unless the story was absolutely breathtaking to you, but to me one AC game is enough. There's really no way you can beat the first time you played Bioshock and saw Rapture for the first time, no matter how many gameplay options and story you add to it. Killzone is a mixed bucket of improvements and missed opportunity. Dead Space went from Isaac being a badass with nothing to say, to having to be captain obvious that can't shut his mouth. I've only played Uncharted 1 and 2, but 1 is better. As for Mass Effect, that was a title basically still trying to find its ground, but I didn't enjoy the first game no matter how hard I tried, so the whole series was out for me. Gears of War 1 was great, but the environment and situations never got better.
This is just what I think of all those games that 'defined' this last gen to many.

Miyamoto has said multiple times that he currently is working on a new IP, we don't know what it is yet. New IPs are more expensive than adding to existing IPs and come with many more risks, hence the reason they don't come around often for Nintendo. The company has a lot of safer existing IPs to focus on. Arguably the Wii brought a new IP with all the Mii related games (Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Music, Wii Party, etc), it just wasn't focused to core gamers because the Wii was such a hit for the casual crowd. It will be interesting to see what Miyamoto has up his sleeves though.

New IPs are hard to develop. I think they should finish reviving these older IPs like F-Zero before they get these new new IPs. But like the post above me said, it's hard to remember but they are making a new IP.

Well it's not exactly a new IP....but I dont see a Paper or Yarn Bayonetta game in the future. And in Bayonetta 2 I don't think she would been throwing flowers at their enemies....

Nintendo knows that they need to feed some mature public.....so who knows.

Xenoblade, I guess it now counts as a new IP as well? They have so many IP's, they can't really handle them all. Probably the company out there with more IP's?

I would stop forgetting it exists if I knew a release date.

I do think the Wii U could use more effort all around right now. It is getting blown out of the water by the line-up the 3DS has for this year.
