The after Wii U Christmas sale was advertised in the eShop, as it should be, since the target was people going into the eShop with point cards they got for Christmas. Maybe you like ads but it looks like nearly everyone else here agrees that they don't want them cluttered on the main menu, they want it clean and simple. Microsoft's mess cluttered dashboard doesn't make me want to follow the ads, it makes me frustrated because I usually have a goal when I turn on a game system and that's to play a game that I purchased. You can't compare that to television, because we aren't paying for the shows, just the service. If we buy a season DVD of a show, we don't have ads interrupting our experience or even when we boot up the DVD player. There's appropriate places for ads and I don't feel my game system's dashboard is for that.

Also, you're probably wasting your time here, most people who've replied here are happy with no ads and the wall of text and pics probably won't change their mind. We don't need a walk through on what's on your dashboard today.

I like how a number of people here are complaining about the 360 dashboard when they clearly haven't used it themselves.

I have a 360, I've used it plenty.

Um.....OK? I'm talking about people that are complaining without ever having used it. Reread the first page of comments and you'll see what I mean.

But again ShadeV your still making the point that its added discover ability for games that might have other wise fell off the way side.

I'm really freaking confused how gamers can hate something that only puts games in your view to play and try.

Also there are ads on the Wii H dashboard what do you thing warawara plaza is.

Hate the Xbox dashboard. Pay for the services and get inundated with Adverts, Wii U Menu is a breath of fresh air. Could do with folders though.

Oh shit you must hate cable newspapers, and 95 percent of other media out their,

But I agree man I turned on my kindle and an Ad came up for 25% off of a audible subscription so I said **** that and threw it away,

U then started to watch TV but to my horror a commercial a restaurant came up and I nearly died.

Come on son.

How are ads for content that's on the console a bad thing. Really instead of saying how you hate ads tell how they Microsoft having discover ability for content is a detriment to not only you as a consumer but developers who complain about the lack of discover ability on the various content stores

For example I turned on my 360 this morning and it looked like this.

Untitled

-clicking on the 2012 tile takes me too a bunch of games that came out last year but didn't get a lot of press.

-clicking on the Rockstar Deals bring up this weeks store sale which is on Red Dead Redemption DLC.

-clicking on Ugly Americans takes you to Hulu Plus

When I click on the Angry Birds tab it takes me here

Untitled
Untitled
Untitled
Untitled

It takes me to a hub based around Kinect Games and Applications. That is effective advertising of a product that a user might want.

The X games panel opens up to the Xbox sports Hub which is similar to the Tvii sports stuff expect it has more services and isn't a desperate app.

Untitled
Untitled

Now let's take a look at the Games Hub
Untitled

From a pushing new content standpoint this is actually pretty good. Both The Cave (an indie game) and the Dead Space 3 demo came out this week and clicking either tab takes you to them in the store.

While the Walking dead may not be new but is still pretty recent and clicking on it takes you to its page .

Clicking the Lego icon takes you to a hub showcasing all of the Lego games that can be purchased on the store and the demos for the more recent ones not on the store yet.

Then on the side there is a recommendation pane based on what you have played.

Explain how putting content and evenly promoting indie as well as major games on its store front is a bad thing.

There TV application is the same way showing recent content (The following started last week and so was the american horror story season finale.) Clicking each one takes me too Xbox video but it also tells me if the content is available in other video apps as well.

Untitled

Again with the Music app all of it is recent content and is updated every Tuesday (the day new music hits) also has a link for the vevo app IG you want to watch music videos. The Titeso title takes you to Youtube playing a live performance he did with the Blue man Group.

And finally the app Hub where you can download non gaming content.

Untitled

Its almost as if people use consoles as more than game machines. The days of a system that only plays and promotes games are done.

Now as a consumer tell me how Microsoft showing you ,ore content on the fore front is a bad thing.

Really explain how any of this us bad when most developers Chief complaints even about the Wii U eshop are worries about discoverablilty as well Nintendo not show casing sales that great. I mean if O didn't browse this forum or gonintendo I wouldnt have known about the eshop after Christmas sale.

But here's the kicker not everyone vists those sites so how do you presume a company gets this information to an average Joe consumer.

My uncle recently got an xbox mostly for the video content but he has bought a few games for the family because they have been advertised on the front page something he probably wouldn't do other wise as he rarely goes into the game store. But having that content on the front page led him to pick up the walking dead (as a fan of the show), Nike+ kinect (dude uses nike + fuel band) and the sesame street games for his kids.

My, you put a lot of effort into arguing something relatively pointless..

While I like the simplicity of the Wii U menu, I wish they would make it more visually pleasant, or at least let me change the wallpaper..

I like the Wiii U dashboard. It's simple and uncluttered, unlike the 360. I have used my brother's 360, and I don't like how the menu is organized.

When I first played Nintendo Land, I said "You know, this games menu where you walk around should have been the menu for the Wii U"

I made Sheldon & Mr. Randoms back on Flipnote Hatena, now i'm a kangaroo mod that has a funko pop collection!

Nahh it would have becoming annoying after the novelty wore off. Fable 3 had its pause menu similar to that and it became more annoying after a few hours into the game.

@Sony_70
Can't really argue against you- Microsoft's dashboard evolution has always been better and better, and the current product is very pleasing to the eyes. However, I would argue a foundational point: the Xbox brand is becoming more of a multimedia console that can play games, while I think Nintendo wants to keep the Wii brand more of a games console that can do some multimedia interactions (TVii, presence of Netflix, Youtube, Hulu, etc.) I don't know if Nintendo really needs to try for something like Microsoft's dashboard, because, frankly, they don't even have that much "stuff" supported on the Wii U to fill something like that. Nintendo would have to almost exclusively focus on those non-game items for the next couple years to even come close to equaling what Xbox currently offers in its TV, Movies, Music, Apps, etc.

Personally, I see no problem in Nintendo's dashboard. I'm a gamer, not a dashboard design artist. I don't care what the menu screen looks like- I want to play video games, darn it! If I want a multidemedia platform, I will buy the next Xbox (which I will) and use it for that functionality. But I think Nintendo should stick to what it does best- make awesome games.

On that note, is it possible to have the Wii U boot straight to your most recently played game or something along those lines? I know the 360 used to have that option, don't know if it's still around, though.

I've got a 360. I remember liking the dashboard better before they completely changed it. I do like the Wii U dashboard better. However, I just use my 360 as a DVD player now so I wouldn't know.

Oh I don't have a problem with the Wii U OS because its straight forward ands while the Wii U has a few media apps Its still squarely focused on being a games console.

Also saying the Wii U dashboard is ad free is wrong, WaraWara plaza is for the most part a giant ad its just different than hjpw Microsoft advertise content.

Microsoft is very straight forward in that the Dashboard OS is just an extension of its various first and third party services (XBLA, Xbox Music and Video, NBA gametime, ESPN)

Nintendo's is more oriented on social advertising similar to what you see on Twiiter or Pintrest. You see what those around you are playing with a icon representation and a link to that game on the eshop.

Both are valid and both have their flaws.

Microsoft's allows for far more content to be advertised as well as sales but the Moore direct advertisements tend to put people off.

Nintendo's is advertising based on what the community is playing but falls because it has the potential to let the flavor of the month dominate the plaza or bigger titles over shadowing smaller ones, that wasn't a problem at launch due to the plaza being dominated by Wii U exclusive content but as more games hits the system thier might be problems,

Also unless your following the devs it may be harder to see what sales come out and how long they might be.

I'm expecting the Durango Dashboard to be similar to the 360 but have the more customizable and have live tiles similar to windows 8 and windows phone.

Because gamers already know what games they want. They use gamesites like IGN and Gamespot. They don't need a million ads in their face about some game they're not interested in. Now, for non-gamers, I can see your point, since they don't know what the best games are, so these ads can be helpful.

I like my Xbox 360 dashboard, and the only flaw is while some of the games ads are welcome, sometimes an ad for a household product comes on, which is annoying. I've seen the Wii U one, and that's a bit too sterile. My 3DS one is my favorite, because it has tons of customization. I can organize everything.

Yeah I also hate how the TV screen can ONLY be used with a Wiimote. It annoys me alot, and the whole Wara Wara Plaza thing is cool in the first hour, then it just becomes stupid. I think Nintendo could've done a much better job with home menu overall. I'm not saying copy XBOX, but it could be much better.

I think the dashboard should've been like the 3DS, because you could launch apps directly from it. With the Wii U, you can only download games, use internet, and check out the Miiverse....... The Wii U interface overall isn't that great....
