So this is just me thinking. What are the real advantages to the new features that the Wii U has as opposed to other consoles? I'm specifically talking about the gamepad, because I'd consider that to be the most significant difference. Here's what I've come up with:
-The touch screen allows for iPhone style casual games, but also Real Time Strategy games like Starcraft to be played on the Wii U.
-The second screen allows you to play most games without the use of a Television.
-The second screen also allows for a different perspective, like a rear-view mirror in a racing game, or the visors in a Metroid game.
-The second screen allows for games that would normally require each player to have their own screen to be playable without splitting the main screen, like FPS games or 3D fighters like Final Fantasy Dissidia.
-The motion sensors in the gamepad allow for some different interaction on their own, like fine tuning the aim in an FPS, steering in a racing game, or allowing the controller to function like a window for google streetview.
-Finally, if I remember correctly, the Wii U allows four normal controllers to be hooked up, which can be any combination of Wii Remote, Nunchuck, or pro controller, as well as two gamepads, in addition to using 3DS consoles by wireless communication like in Monster Hunter Ultimate. This means that without an internet connection, if you have four pro controllers and two gamepads, you could have a 6 player deathmatch in an FPS, 6 players could fight at once in Smash Bros, 6 racers could race in Mario Kart, a Zelda 6 Swords is possible, and perhaps even more players could join in with 3DS systems.
Is there anything the Gamepad can do that I've left out? Is the Wii U taking proper advantage of it's own capabilities? I'd like to hear your thoughts.
I have to disagree with your RTS reason. I've played Starcraft 2 and Age of Empires 1-3 and all of them require a 2 button mouse. A touchscreen would require very awkward controls for deselecting units.
My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.
I'm pretty sure that you can't have two game pads at once at the moment, but that would be awesome if you could have up to six Game Pads at once. I would like to know, however, if you could play the Pro Controller instead of the Game Pad, or with the Game Pad. I would like to play Smash Bros. with friends, but I would like play with the Pro Controller at some times, but I would also like to have one person play with the Game Pad while I play with the Pro Controller. Is this possible? Could you have four Pro Controllers and one Game Pad at once?

the WiiU's advantage is that its game library will have more great stuff by the time I get one!(in other words: I'm not getting it anytime soon but I want it a lot!)

I think you misunderstood me. It's not actually possible to have more than two gamepads. You can have up to 4 pro controllers, and since this is seperate from the gamepad limit, you can theoretically have 6 players with 2 gamepads and 4 pro controllers. As long as you don't have more than 2 gamepads, or more than 4 pro controllers, then any combination of pro controllers and gamepads is technically possible, though it depends on if the game supports it. While the Wii U is technically capable of handling two gamepads at once, the gamepad itself is not yet sold seperately, so you'd need a friend to bring his from his system, and on top of that there aren't any games that support two gamepads yet anyway, so it'd be pointless to try at this point, but it's still possible. Hope that clears things up.
When games start utilizing two gamepads and your friend can bring one over ... that's gonna be pretty awesome. Lots of possibilities when it comes to multiplayer games.
@Obito_Tennyson More than two GamePads will reduce the fps on all screens, sorry :/
Yup, by almost half. That's why Nintedo wont let you buy them separate. I have herd they are working on fixing this through the os but it's most likely rumor.

As far as we know Nintendo said the system only supports 2...so I doubt 4 will happen anytime.

It's all about the hardware, not the OS. I doubt the Wii U can handle more than two Gamepads

Hrm ... I bet they figure something out. Gamers make a big deal out of FPS, but what most don't realize is that many of your games being played on console run between 30-40 FPS typically. If it runs any higher than that (games like CoD, for instance), the publisher usually likes to let you know in BIG BOLD statements as it tends to be a bragging point.
Anyways, my point is that perhaps most games that would utilize two gamepads would tend to be "party"-type games where Nintendo could focus on upping the FPS a bit as those games don't tend to be the most graphics- intensive, thus allowing for the game to still be quite playable even if the framerate were to be cut in half down to 30 or so. 30 FPS is very, very playable, and personally I wouldn't have a problem with it if it allowed two gamepads at the same time at that rate.
I think the fact that the GamePad isn't the only controller you can use is an advantage. It's the main controller, obviously, but Wii remotes are still a good and common way to play video games. I prefer Wii remote/nunchuck over anything else most of the time.
The Pro controller is more for fighting games, IMO. Super Smash Bros. will basically require it for multiplayer, and maybe X if they let you do splitscreen with the GamePad.
Another advantage is free online and Miiverse. Nintendo can cater more specifically to the Wii U's features if they have to by giving it its own social/communication area. I think Miiverse will eventually be just as capable as what PS4 and Xbox One are offering on the online feature front.
I think more games will have features like Mario Kart TV for their games, eventually. There's still alot untouched, and we will see whether Nintendo makes those improvements in due time. I'd bet Nintendo's goal is to get these things out the door right before Xbox One and PS4 launch.

PS4+Vita= Wii U. Smartglass is a joke though. But what's great about the Vita is that it's a console on its own, so I can play a game on my PS3, and whenever I leave I can put the game seamlessly onto my Vita and play on the go. The Wii U's advantages are the exclusives, but that's it. It's the only reason why I got one in the first place.

Tell me one Xbox 360 gamer you know that actually uses SmartGlass for videogames.

L, LZ (R, RZ for lefties)
Sounds awkward to me... or at least not as easy as a mouse. And hotkeys? What about them? To have an RTS on the level of a PC you'd need the controls of a PC. Plus that control scheme would be Kid Icarus all over again and half of the people would complain about hand cramps.
