To get the Wii U sales up, they will announce for this fall:
The NEW Wii U for the price of 150.00(no gamepad) or 250.00(new smaller improved gamepad) let me explain.
no gamepad means, you can use the old wii u gamepad OR use your The NEW 3DS.
thats my predictions. The NEW Wii U and The NEW 3DS XL will be branded together and the marketing campaign will stress the fact that you can now use the new 3ds instead of the gamepad. this will totally create a buzz. especially for those who only have the NEW 3DS and are waiting on the fence whether to jump on the Wii U bandwagon.
The New 3DS doesn't have a have a high enough screen resolution to replace the Gamepad as a controller.
It doesn't need to replace it. Even as a 2nd controller, a (temporary) replacement when there's something wrong with your Gamepad or you don't care about offscreen gaming, it's a good idea to add it as a controller.
Won't work. The New 3DS still doesn't have the same buttons as the Gamepad, nor does the touchscreen have the same aspect ratio. It's possible to program support for separate games, like they did with Smash, but the New 3DS won't be able to truly emulate the Gamepad.
I could see them updating the Wii U to allow the use of a New 3DS as a gamepad and sell them as a bundle for $350 but I don't think it is likely. If they did then you could sell a gamepad less Wii U for $179.99 for anyone who already has a New 3DS? It would make sense, especially if "Fusion" is the direction they are going next gen, but I have no idea if they can steam images from Wii U to the New 3DS or if it would just be a controller. Interesting idea but I don't think we will see a true unification of handheld and home console until next gen. At that point I think we will have 1 eShop and cross buy but still separate SKU's
oh you mean like the TV button.. i see.. but buttons like that can be reassigned to the touch screen.
Nope, I meant the buttons under the analog sticks. Assigning them to the touchscreen would bad idea because, as I said, the 3DS' sreen isn't wide-screen like the Gamepad's.

What buttons doesn't it have? Has 4 shoulder buttons, same face buttons and a home button. Even has NFC built in as well as 2 analogue sticks kinda?
Edit - I see your answer above. I forgot about the analogue stick click buttons........
To use the New 3DS as a controller it's a good idea and Nintendo has talked about it a few times. TV button doesn't matter, the Wii U pro controller doesn't have it either. The clickable buttons are ignored by most Wii U games but, if a game needed them, they could be assigned to the touch screen. or ZL and ZR, if those were not being used.
I really don't like the navigation bar of Nintendo Life continuously reappearing while browsing!!

Like I explained above, using the touchscreen for buttons is impossible because it's not wide enough. So if a game uses both the Z buttons and stick-buttons, you have a problem. @Dipper723 The frames rendered for the TV are 720/1080p, the ones rendered for the Gamepad are 480p.

Actually, the topscreen of the 3DS is widescreen. It has a 15:9 aspect ratio. Not the same as the Gamepad, but it only needs very small black borders to show the same picture. It does have half the resolution of the Gamepad, but it still looks decent.

For games that don't use clickable L/R and for multiplayer, then. About the screen resolution, the 3DS would need to rescale it.
