@Octane VGchartz isn't really that reliable at all. I wanted to check out how much Sonic series has sold in total and It didn't even come close to 45. When I googled it out, Its stated that Sonic sold around 140 million hits, almost close to that of Mario and it beats the hell out of Final Fantasy!

I'm pretty sure that Masahiro Sakurai will come up with an F-Zero game and then it'll be a hit and that it won't get a sequel for years........like Kid icarus.

Ok...

If you check the sources on that Wikipedia article, one of the links cites Videogamer.com, where it says "has sold over 80 million units." No further source is cited by videogamer.com. Article was posted in June 2011.

The second source quoted for that 140 million figure is a blog on Sega.com, saying "over 140 million videogames sold or downloaded worldwide across consoles, PC’s, mobile phones and tablets." This source also seems rather dubious, even if it is posted on Sega.com. This blog was posted in May 2014.

So apparently Sonic sold 80 million 1991-2011 and another 60 million 2011-2014. I'm a little skeptical. Unless, I dunno, about 55 million of those 2011-2014 sales were tablet/mobile maybe? Another 3 million VC downloads on Wii and 3DS?

But Super Mario alone, counting no other Mario subseries, has 262 million sales according to BusinessWire.com, a much more credible source than a blog. Sonic, even if we accept the ludicrous 140 million figure, has barely sold half of what Super Mario has sold. Then there's Mario Kart, Mario Party, Mario Sports, and Mario RPG.

It depends. For a quick comparison as this, it's pretty reliable. The actual F-Zero sales aren't going to differ by millions.

This is the counter argument: Sales have been declining with every new iteration of the series. It's no surprise we haven't seen a F-Zero game lately.

You've got to remember the userbase of SNES, N64 & NGC also got smaller too.

True, but that doesn't change the fact that the sales were declining. If the console sales are too small to support a niche game, then there's little reason (other than fan service) for the company to develop a sequel to that game. I wonder how a F-Zero would've fared on the Wii, but I don't think it'll be anywhere near succesful on the Wii U.

Even if you look at the attach rate of F-Zero games, on average they have been declining as well. Not only the userbase of the consoles decreased, but the general interest in F-Zero games as well.

I'd love FZero64 on 3DS even. Maybe throw in some online multiplayer.

With all of the recent N64 remakes, I wouldn't be surprised if this turned out real.

There is one problem I see with this, though: I distinctly recall Miyamoto saying he couldn't come up with anything to advance the series, and I think he even said at one point he thought the series ran it's course (though I could be wrong about that one.). Though I could definitely see Nintendo releasing a remake.

Yeah, I remember Miyamoto stating that, and it irks me. He doesn't seem to understand that the core mechanic of F-Zero is very clearly defined, and doesn't leave much room for advancement. Also, I don't think F-Zero needs much advancement, it just requires a bit of creative design for tracks, environments, and characters.
Not every game needs to advance, some just need to keep being good.

That's why I think a 3DS port or WiiU VC release of F-Zero X would be a very good way to test the potential userbase. If the game sells well, and feedback indicates interest in more, F-Zero GX could follow, or, if Nintendo feels ballsy enough, get busy developing a new F-Zero title.

@SpookyMeths why would you assume that SEGA themselves are lying about the sales figures? if a blog states that, it states it. The fact that its SEGA's blog just sums it up. And you're saying that a simple blog can be a lie?

I get that you're not into Sonic selling well but since its stated otherwise and since SEGA has the only thing that sell whether its good or bad just shows that it did end up selling over 140 mil. Sure its nowhere as close as Super Mario sales but personally, I'm happy that Sonic is doing fine in the biz and is one of the few that's still alive in the gaming biz.

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

I'm not buying it. The numbers don't add up at all. The blog can say whatever it wants, I don't think those numbers are verified. The only thing I can think of is if there were literally tens upon tens of millions of mobile downloads in there. Are there really like 60-100 million people walking around with Sonic on their phones?

Even the Wikipedia entry on Sonic the Hedgehog disagrees, putting it at a total of 85 million, and 21 million of those are from the Mario & Sonic sports games. Difference with that chart is that every one of those games, minus Sonic Rush and Sonic and the Secret Rings, has an independently verifiable source for its sales from Sega Sammy's financial reports. It's not just some random number on a blog.

If the blog indeed says "over 140 million videogames sold or downloaded worldwide across consoles, PC’s, mobile phones and tablets.", it is not sales figures. It's sales and download. There are quite a few free-to-download Sonic games available on the mobile eShops, and the ones that costs money costs about 5% of a typical console game.

Those kind of download figures should be compared to Angry Birds' 2+ billion downloads.

People always say VGChartz isn't good but there isn't another site that provides this info. If anyone knows of a better site that has a bunch of sales data for a bunch of different games please let me know.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

It makes you wonder what advancements could be made in the F-Zero series.

And it would also have to convince new people to jump in as well.

F-Zero as a series is, unfortunately, in a pretty tough spot.

@topic: F-Zero in HD, faster than other race games, four players, online multiplayer. They game would be great even if it's just a remake of F-Zero GX. Nintendo has to support its oldest fans!

I can defintely see why everyone is expecting online for a possible F-Zero game, but I think that's a bad idea. Online is quite costly, and F-Zero is a niche title. The risk likely wouldn't pay off well.

I disagree. WiiU doesn't have any racing games and F-Zero could be made to a big mainstream title like Mario Kart.

But even without online mode, the game would satisfy the hardcore fans

Gamecubed

Well... we're getting Star Fox and Majora's Mask 3D. Both of those were big fan requests, so I don't doubt anything anymore.

In what way isn't NFS: Most Wanted a racing game?

Okay. There are racing games but only a few and none of them is quite good.

So you obviously haven't played NFS: Most Wanted. It's an excellent open world racing game and one of the best 3rd party games for the Wii U. The developers did a great work with the Wii U version.

Okayokay. But it's still the only one, isn't it? New racing games would be great for the WiiU.

Last time I checked, Mario Kart 8 still exists, and its pretty good...most of the time. I have a love/hate relationship with that game.

There is nothing here...except for the stuff I just typed...
