Pokemon isn't suited for a home console especially given its a game built around trading and battling. Its a game that would work fantastically with some streetpass elements. Why break a winning formula?

Boom. Numbers don't lie. Completely agree - Pokemon works best on handhelds, and things should stay that way. Although it's surprising that some of the console games didn't sell more...

In all fairness, all those home console Pokemon games are spinoffs. You can't expect them to sell as well as a mainline Pokemon game.

Well Pokemon Colosseum was an RPG and it didn't save the Gamecube.... just saying...
Still, I do think that a game built around the idea of trading and battling isn't really built for a home console. They have whole tournaments built around Pokemon, taking your DS to a shop or event so you can get a rare Pokemon is a thing. These are things people expect from Pokemon and you can't copy that over to a home console.
You could even go further and say that this style of RPG sells best on a portable console.
Look at the upcoming software - Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 8, DKCR - doesnt it look like Nintendo is targeting 3DS owners as potential Wii U buyers? Or is it just me?
A proper Pokemon game should come to the console, surely it'd sell consoles. Online play would solve any problems that come about from it not being on a portable console, would it not?

It's just you and nope. Mario Kart and DKCR were both Wii titles before they were on the 3DS. Although you're right that the Mario 3D 'series' was a portable title first but New SMB was also. Now nobody thinks of New SMB as a portable game although they definitely did when New SMB Wii was announced. Same in reverse, Mario Kart, OoT and Animal Crossing were home console titles first but have done very well on the 3DS.
I think it's fair to say that the lines between console and portable are more blurred than they have ever been but there are still ideas that work better on one or the other. A game you can play for small chunks designed to be played over weeks and even months with a local social element works best on a portable. A game that's online heavy and visually intense built to be played in hour plus blocks works best when played on your TV. Pokemon is a portable staple, it fits that mold very well, why would you change it?

Well yes, Mario Kart was on the console first, but no game has ever been called Mario Kart 2, Mario Kart 3 etc.... Now, after a succesful Mario Kart 7, Mario Kart 8 is on the Wii U.
This and using Mario 3D Land brand seems to suggest they're going with 3DS brands
Point is, all 3 of these games sold well on 3DS (which has a bigger install base than Wii U, meaning not every 3DS owner has a Wii U) and now they all coming to Wii U, with the 3D Mario and Mario Kart using the 3DS brand.
That aint no coincidence when you're trying to sell stuff
Good. Now I don't have to go on a rant about how no one really "wins" a console war, in the sense that the only real losers are the ones who don't make money, at least in the business world.

They've been using similar branding across platforms since the NES and GB era. They had Kirby's Dream Land and then Kirby's Adventure, they had Super Mario Bros and then Super Mario Land, they had Metroid on the NES and then Metroid 2 on the Gameboy. So to say that this is somehow a "Wii U is struggling, lets use 3DS games to save it" and nothing more is a bit of a stretch. You could pick any two Nintendo consoles of the same era and you'll find series that had a version on both.
Also if it was purely that and not just the same old using popular brands to sell games there's something missing. The 3DS also had Luigi's Mansion, Fire Emblem, Kid Icarus, Animal Crossing, Mario & Luigi and a remake of Starfox 64. The Wii U doesn't have any of those on the horizon. Instead it is getting/has Pikmin 3, Game & Wario, The W101, Lego City, X and Bayonetta 2. None of which have 3DS success stories to back them and most have never been portable games.
And sorry for not responding to your pooint about Pokemon. I dont play the game so I cant constructively debate it.
Just making a point that Nintendo looks like its trying to sell the Wii U to 3DS owners, with the games its putting out
Well it's clear that you don't if you think Pokemon is as easily translatable to a home console as Mario Kart or 3D Land

Bayonetta should be a good one to bring new players that played the first one to Wii U. That's why they want that, and Nintendo makes the smart choice in competing (if they actually were) by casually standing back, and letting the other games companies take eachother down so if Nintendo was trying to win console wars they have the right strategy just the Wii U is struggling, and Nintendo is likely using 3DS franchises to boost it.
