Topic: The best local multiplayer games for wii u?

Nintendo Land has long legs in my house - still enjoy playing it nearly two years on and so does my daughter. The Zelda, Metroid and Pikmin games have a decent amount of depth. If you lack extra controllers you can play these games in tournament mode where you take turns and compare scores.

I would also think about how much you're likely to have a four or five player game. I had the extra remotes because I liked the options, but I only have two nunchuks because I just never have a call for four of those to date. And it pays to check out the Wii back catalogue - if you're going to invest in remotes no reason not to and might make your extra purchase feel more justified.

I'll second Game & Wario which is a great showcase for the Gamepad and doesn't require remotes. Wii Party U does need remotes and is good fun too; also includes Gamepad-only tabletop games for two players.
