Hi everyone,

I hope someone here will be able to help me with my Wii U problem. I installed the system update this afternoon and ever since my system has been freezing. It will lock up on the home screen or take longer than normal to launch any game, application, and Netflix.

When attempting to play Super Mario U the game would either freeze before it would load or I would be able to launch the game but then it would freeze during selecting play options.

I launched the saved two player game. We both activated our players using the Wii remote but then I could not tap OK on the Wii U tablet to start the game. However I could start the game in one player mode and then add in a second player once the game was running.

Any ideas what could be going on??

This issue appears to be fairly common, but I don't know exactly what causes this issue. I'm sorry that I couldn't help you.

My Wii U freezes too but not in that way. It is completely random and happens about once a week or more. I believe it is a software issue, and Nintendo is trying to get rid of it, hopefuly.

I emailed Nintendo tech support and also posted to their forum. The email response suggested to unplug from the wall. As that never occurred to me?! That was the first thing I tried.

Response received on the tech support forum: you must send your system in for a repair.

No explanation as to WHY a repair would be needed when my system has not moved from its location or been damaged in anyway. The problem started immediately after the forced system update upon turning the system on. Really not impressed with the tech "support" from Nintendo. Hoping it will be fixed with a new update. No way am I sending it in for a repair when they cannot give me a valid explanation as to why. Seems fishy! Been through that far too often with cell phone providers always telling customers to send in for a repair or buy a new phone when a simple software fix is all that is required. Found out that most tech support employees are instructed to tell customers to send in for a repair when one is not required simply because it brings in more $$$ for the company.

Yeah when I first got mine in march it froze quite often, as Nintendo told you I would unplug it as it happens.

It's happened to me and its happened while I've been game (black ops 2 and need for speed) and also while trying to load the home menu. I have been able to switch it off via the button on the gamepad each time.

Hope Nintendo get this sorted out soon. If it is indeed a console problem.

Unplugged it and left it over night. Didn't work. Very frustrated with Nintendo as they cannot give me a reason as to why this happens.

My console has frozen like 5 times since 3.0.0. When I'm playing Black Ops 2 Multiplayer and go to the menu I get the infinite menu loading screen and with VC games I also get the infinite menu loading screen. I'm not really worried because I can now shut it off with the power button, but I do find it FRUSTRATING and ANNOYING! No more VC games until they release an update. I'm going to e-mail Nintendo about this.

That's so frustrating!! My wii is still playing up too. I emailed Nintendo customer support and received the following response: please call Nintendo at 1-800-255-3700 to arrange a repair.

That's it!! No explanation why a repair is required and no response to my follow up email asking for a reason. Called tech support and was told to unplug the system, even though I informed the agent I already tried that. He then transferred me to repairs, again no explanation. This is absolutely ridiculous!

Noticed that Nintendo's latest system updates have been flawed? The last 3DS system update had to be bug-fixed, & it still is a bit unresponsive on the Home menu. These Wii U issues are no surprise. Hopefully they fix this too.

The email response suggested to unplug from the wall.

I'm surprised there is no other way to turn it off safely, does the Wii U tell you if your files are corrupted?

You can power it off by holding the power button. I've been able to do it since the las update and it always works. I e-mailed Nintendo and they told me to call them to set up a repair. -.-

Same thing they said to me along with unplugging it from the wall. That was the first thing I tried. Nintendo cannot tell me why my console would need a repair and they ignore me when I ask. I'm not setting up a repair when they can't even tell me the reason why! Something is flawed with the recent update. Everything was fine until then. The fact that they dodge my questions doesn't give me much confidence.

Heat problems maybe?

It isn't a heat problem, it's a software issue that Nintendo has not fixed since God knows when and it is starting to piss me off.

@Permafrost I'd suggest waiting for the summer update before getting in a panic. Remember, the Spring update is part of a two-step process. The former focused on backing out of/closing software, while the latter is set to improve software loading/start-up. That said, while it isn't good practice, its conceivable that you have stumbled upon a few of the unforeseen loose ends which will be fixed in the next major update.

I'm really not impressed with Nintendo at all. They're completely ignoring my emails and posts on the forums. They insist I send in for a repair yet refuse to explain why. If I call I get passed along to set up a repair who will not answer my questions, just insists I send in for a repair when it's an obvious software issue from the recent update.

Nice customer service!

I also don't trust the customer service because a long time ago I sent my DS lite for repairs because it didn't turn on. When I got it back everything was fine for a few days when it randomly powered off (dafuq). I didn't enjoy playing because it happened almost everytime, it was horrible. That's why I don't trust the customer service and I won't. I'm going to wait for more updates and if something happens to my console I would rather buy a new one than sending it to the customer service.

Wow. Crazyness in this thread...
@Scaryboo1998
Nintendo will make sure you don't lose your games if your consoles breaks. You must send it in for a repair if it's actually broken. Your DS Lite incident was a rare mishap. I've had very few customer service contact, but it was a good experience for me. Why neglect a free warranty service and buy a new console altogether?

I have a Wii U, and it has not frozen in months. My advice would be:
1. Simplify your internet settings on your router(not the Wii U). Make sure port forwarding, DMZ, etc. router settings are off. Your router will operate fine off the factory defsult settings. Make sure your router is up to date with the latest firmware.

2. Run every application and feature at least once(disc games not included). Run Miiverse, the friend list, internet browser, download status, TVii, settings, Wii U chat, etc. RUN EVERY PIECE OF SOFTWARE ON THE CONSOLE AT LEAST ONCE.

There have been issues with Wii U freezes since launch, but most of them can be avoided without much hassle. Please try these suggestions, then use your console like normal.
Nintendo is improving their console, but most of the time it is the users internet. Running every app and feature on the console at least once seemed to fix some problems for me(the Nintendo Land freeze in December, BEFORE THE UPDATE), so that is why I am suggesting it.
Some software is buggy BTW, Sonic Racing was literally unplayable until Sega released an update. Now there are no problems. It was the fault of Sega, not Nintendo it that case.
