So for the new Super Smash Brothers for Nintendo Wii U, there is a new feature, Amiibo. Amiibo is a new line of skylanders/disney infinity-esque figures for Nintendo video games. I will be briefly describing them for those who don't exactly understand the ideas for Amiibo in Super Smash Brothers yet.
As Iwata shown in his Super Smash Brothers face-off with fellow Nintendo president, Reggie Fils-Amie, the Amiibo figures are able to assist you, and the line of figures consist of characters in the full roster.
Along with assisting you, there are other features to these figures, as Bill Trinen explained, they can level up through the battles they participate in, can have their own custom movesets, be equipped with gear, they even learn and develop their own battle strategy. So every figure, thanks to the player, can be very unique.
Amiibos are more advanced than CPUs, as I already stated, they develop their own strategy based on the battles they participate in, and as shown in the image above, their difficulty level can reach up to Level 50, unlike CPUs, which can reach 9.
You can use them in a variety of ways, as your sidekick for battles against your friends when you're in a pinch, letting them fight eachother in a way that feels like Pokemon, or you can use it as your own training partner, that learns from you and gets stronger from it.
However, the biggest question centering around this is "Do we HAVE to buy these?"
That answer is, surprisingly, no. Sakurai stated that in sake of the players, that the Figure Player feature is 100% optional, and does not add anything necessary to the main game. They are designed in a way that you DON'T need to buy them.
In my case? I'll be buying one. Just one. Probably Mario, just to use as a training partner.
I didn't think there was any ambiguity about the issue. I plan on picking up a few, but I never thought they were required.
They aren't required, which is good. I'll probably get some for the sake of collecting. Super Smash Brothers merchandise is something I've wanted for a LONG time.
