Topic: Store returns/trade-ins without receipt

Are there any retail stores that will accept returns or trade-ins of video games without a receipt for full money/credit back? I'm looking to take advantage of Target's B2G1 on Wii U games. Unfortunately, one of the games I'm wanting is Wind Waker HD. The digital version will be available tomorrow from where I live, but the physical version won't be out for a couple of weeks, and Target does not sell codes for digital games. They do sell cards for eShop credit though afaik.

I guess maybe this is a two-question thread. The first was already asked because I'd like to take the 3rd game from the deal, go to a different store, and get money/credit back that I can use towards WWHD. That is of course if that's possible and which stores would allow that. The second I guess would be if Target were to allow the free game to be exchanged for eShop credit that is of equal value of the cheaper of the two games purchased for the deal.

So you want some advice on how to scam a retail store?

Yeah, good luck with that.

What games are you gonna buy, and which one are you trying to exchange?

EDIT: @the_shpydar
I knew this kid that exchanged his original DS at Walmart a year later for a DS Lite, but he had the receipt. He didn't even have a warranty.

Why don't you just ask them if you can get the ammount from the 3rd game transferred torwards an eShop card?

Or find a buyer for the game before hand, and sell it for $10 less than MSRP.

No. Absolutely not. EDIT: Target does allow 1-2 returns without receipt, but you probably need a credit card to prove your purchase.

No. You will receive the same money back that you did before with a free game. You can't trade the item(s) back for more than what they were worth.

The "amount" is $0, hence the "get one free". Stores also typical do not allow substitutions. The only solution is to sell the third game on eBay.

I'd say his best bet is asking if he can get the equal value transfered to an eShop card, or just get the free game and sell it.

EDIT: They technically get more money if you buy an $50 eShop card. If he buys 2 $30 games, and gets one of equal value, free, but transfers that, then pays $20 more for the $50 card, I see no loss for the store.

That's how it could/should work, but these deals are always so specific. Unless the employees are kind, you're not gonna get what you want in this situation.

Deals like this are usually specific on what you get. You get a third game, not an eShop card.

Ya, I know that's not usually how things work. It's technically trading equally valued merchandise in store.
Another thing you could try:
Get the 3rd game, then try and return it for 1/3 that you paid.

There's 3 ways that it works, but they only allow one according to their policy, probably. They probably won't accept a return from a free product, even for it's actual value during the deal.

EDIT: Good luck. You're just going to have to go in store and figure it out.

Sorry but you've got no chance, how did you pay for your games? the only way could get around this is if you've paid for your goods by a credit card. Go to your bank for a statement, which shows the transaction, and even then it's down to the good will of the company. Even with a receipt a company can still refuse a refund depending how long you've had them games, also not all companies have the same policies. You've got a window of a refund when you buy a product it's usually around 28 days for ASDA, but as i said different companies have different policies which change from what type of product you bought. All i can suggest is saying you got the game as a birth day present, you've already got the game so can you exchange for different game. Thay can refuse you as i said but out of the good will of the company thay might exchange the game for a different game of the same value, good luck.

Well, I guess I'll just go over to Target tomorrow. It doesn't hurt to ask if the free game can go towards an eShop card. One of the games I want is Rayman, another game is WWHD. Not quite sure about what I want the 3rd game to be, but essentially, if I bought 2 $60 games, and they let me substitute the 3rd for a $50 eShop card (that I could use towards WWHD digital), I would have no problems with that.

I know you mean well, but if you had read the rest of the post instead of that one part, you wouldn't have needed to bring up most of what you said.

People buying goods on sale at one store and taking it to another store to get the full value are a big part of the reason so many stores now have restrictive return policies. Just saying.

From what I know from past experiences is that if you have no receipt more than likely the store especially when it comes to something like a video game will only let you do an exact item exchange. Your best bet is if you want to get rid of the third game either

a) Trade it in somewhere like Gamestop since you wont pay anything for it whatever credit Gamestop will give you is more than what you paid

b) Sell it for full price on Ebay or Craig's List

I probably shouldn't be saying this, but I'm not so sure why you're giving banacheck the brushoff so quickly, because they've probably got the best idea out of the bunch. get a gift receipt for your games when you go through the line, then when WW comes out in physical form, take the gift receipt and exchange it (maybe at a different Target). As long as the game you're trading in is whole and unopened and valued at the same original price as WW, you should be good to go — and if you can't, just take it to a local GameStop and trade it in against WW. There's no way Target's going to let you get an eShop card instead of the third game, the reason they have these sales is so that they can move physical product. If they were trying to get rid of eShop cards, those would be on sale, not actual Wii U games.
