Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere.
I understand that local multiplayer is limited in the game. But what controllers are compatible. Obviously i have the Wii U gamepad but is it only the pro controller you can use as player 2 or is wiimote / nunchuk or classic controller a possibility. Local multiplayer is still a selling point to me so just curious.

The Classic Controller is also compatible, along with the Pro Controller. Those are the only options.

You use 2 screens when you play online, so the Gamepad is the only control option. (Splatoon isn't a local multiplayer game, it's an online multiplayer game.)

A local 1 vs 1 balloon popping game is available, but that's not a mode you should buy the game for. That's the only mode where you can use anything else than the Gamepad as the second controller.

We've added an additional "party account" on the Wii U where we can party play Splatoon online by passing the Gamepad between Turf War matches.

Sounds a clever way of keeping people involved if i have friends over to play @jariw .
Thanks for the heads up @brewsky I will dust off the classic controller so my girlfriend can at least play a bit tonight

No local multiplayer? I hoped there would be a solution like in Mario Kart 8. Online Games with two players with one WiiU.

That wouldn't really work, as the player needs the second screen online for super jumps and other stuff. We'd need to be able to hook up two gamepads to the system, which we currently can't. Maybe in the future, if that feature ever actually happens, it might be patched in, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

In theory they could make a 4 splitscreen with the top two being the player 1 playing on the left and secondscreen on the right, and the bottom two the same for player 2.

But then how would you do a super jump?

You could select the location with your controller instead of the touch screen maybe

Even better, have a mini map on screen and assign each player a direction on the D Pad.

Have you played the game? The game is in 720p with lots of bright colors (mainly 2 colors on the ground). Splitting that 720p into pieces and having a mini map in the same colors on screen is good? And the D-pad is already in use.

And if there are 2 players of different teams (which it will be 50% of the time), the point of not having the enemy locations revealed is gone.

No, I don't see how this would work on one screen either and I think it's pretty clear there's issues with multiple Gamepads, so I wouldn't expect to see that either - at least not a demanding game like this.
