Why not?

The money it takes to develop the Wii U is a lot. The Wii U could still be a worse than GameCube disappointment and it still might be better to just take it. Imagine it, the Wii U is going to be bought by hardcore Nintendo fans regardless. Making a new system quickly would be a NUCLWAR DISASTER for Nintendo because gamers already don't view Nintendo well right now. It will just confirm to people Nintendo is dried up and no longer relevant to gamers. Heck, if the Wii U didn't sell one more console it STILL might be better just to wait for the next cycle than make an embarrassment of themselves in that fashion. Of course, maybe Im being too pessimistic about gamers' views on Nintendo.

@Trainer_DJ Honestly, if they do what I suggested and make their next console also a handheld, it wouldn't matter, since it would replace the 3DS and the Wii U, and appeal to a much broader audience. I'd rather Nintendo not keep shoveling money into the bottomless pit that the Wii U looks like it might become, and get out while they can. I'd give it about 2 or 3 years, when 3DS sales may have started to drop off (or at least reached critical mass). Of course, maybe they'd have to wait 5 years for the tech to be affordable, so they could have a console level system that could also be a convenient portable system? Who knows, I guess this is all speculation on my part.

I'm sure when that time comes they'll be bankrupt, if Nintendo were smart they'd save themselves and sell the company to Sony, so things can be done right~
And haven't we learned by now Nintendo never gives people what they want.

That's not going to happen lol Sont isn't any better of a company than Nintendo as far as video games go, so idk why you would think that they could do it better. that just sounds like fanboyism to me. and I love and have grown up with Sony consoles for the record, definitely going to be getting a PS4 this gen.

But idk I have no idea what they're going to do post-Wii U. It's way too early to be able to make a good guesstimation. But a console with a smaller gamepad that you could take anywhere with out and could also play games in 3D would be cool so it's like a home console and portable in the same box.

I agree, I think the Wii U will pull through and end up being an great console. I think it's an awesome console already, but I just lack the funds to get one right now. Them coming out with some solid software and a few new IPs would be great as well.

Agreed. Things are already starting to look up in Japan with Pikmin 3's release, so realistically things can only start to get better from here. That's the hope anyway.

I think it would honestly be in Nintendo's best interest to retire the Wii U sooner than later, especially if things don't pick up. Nintendo's next console could come sooner than you'd think.

Thatd be a pretty horrible idea in my opinion, what a waist of money it would be, how can people even be talking about Wii U's failure when really the system hasn't even really started? Games are just now about to come out and it seems like Ubisoft has some faith in Nintendo atleast. I think nintendo wants to turn things around with the Wii U and get on the right path. Yes they still need a lot of work, but moving back to classic style controllers ( not counting Gamepad) is atleast a step in the right direction

Yeah, I really reeeaaalllyyy doubt Nintendo's even going to consider that. Merging two console lines would be a terrible idea. To do so would mean that they'd lose the income they used to get from one of those console lines. Right now, most Nintendo fans buy both the handheld and home consoles of the current generation. Merging them would mean Nintendo would have to increase the price of this new merged-console by A LOT to make up for losing an entire console line.

Sales would in turn drop by massive proportions and everyone would hate Nintendo (Ok possibly everyone but you ).

Besides think about it. The controller for this merged console would have to have a screen right? So the games would more than likely employ two screens (also considering Nintendo's thing with dual screens). And if you use the controller as a handheld, you'd lose the capabilities provided by the second screen. Or the controller would need to have 2 screens in which case it would cost doodoopoopie-loads to manufacture, and would cost way too much for people to even consider buying for multi-player uses. Especially if Nintendo went all "3d screen" and crap. Imagine buying a $200 controller. Why would you need 3D on a controller anyway? "Because it's also a handheld," Nintendo answers.

Hmmm...

Peek-a-boo

Another underpowered system with a 'unique NEW way' of playing games which pushes third party developers even further way than they already are now.

Oh, and despite pleas for new IPs or the return of Metroid, Starfox and F-Zero, they will never give us what we want; it'll be Mario, Donkey Kong, Mario, Zelda, Mario, Mario and even more Mario!

... whilst the Wii relied on the universal demographic of young and old people playing the likes of Wii Sports, lightening won't strike twice. People know their Wii was likely only used for those social situations and most likely just sat there gathering dust in the meantime.

Also, you'd be surprised at the number of folks who think the GamePad is a Wii accessory, an add-on so to speak ... even Nintendo themselves were in a position of having to send a message to Wii owners saying the Wii U is A BRAND NEW SYSTEM!

Thankfully the 3DS is a success at present so, maybe they'll make a some form of hybrid handheld and home console thingie. I could see it working. As long as they drop the terrible 'Wii' name, of course.

If I were a betting man, I would bet that you were right. (Although I don't think this will happen soon, certainly not before Christmas 2017 at the absolute earliest to give the Wii U a 5-year minimum lifespan).

Nintendo are clearly overstretched in terms of software development (just look as the first year of both the 3DS and the Wii U), and they merged their handheld and home console hardware divisions recently.
