Topic: So ... Region locking

With the recent Xbox 180 decision, Wii U is the last home console to have region locking. I didn't really think about it until I saw a slew of posts about it in Miiverse. I think it's time for a new patch. Something like operation rainfall wouldn't have even been necessary if the consoles were region free. Is there any good reason to keep this restriction?

It's only there to prevent importing, and importers are a small faction anyways, at least in the United States. It's a big deal to businesses in Europe, Australia, and even Japan, where it can be much cheaper to import than to buy locally for certain games. It's also there so people can't give negative reviews of imported versions of games before they're brought to the west. I know I would like it if it goes away, but I can't help but think they'd lose support from Namco Bandai and Atlus if that were to happen.

Doesn't talk about games.

I really hate region locking!! Games in USA costs $60USD which roughly converts to $70NZD but we get charged basically $100NZD for the exact same product! A lot of people from the USA "COMPLAIN" about the prices of games but they have no right to when other countries get stung even more. If I could trade my PAL Wii U for an NTSC Wii U, I would without blinking.

Also the fact that a few Wii games I want are not available in PAL region (or are really had to get a new copy of the game)... If only Nintendo would stop with this region-locking crap. If that day ever comes, I'll love my Nintendo consoles even more.

There are definitely reasons why it exists. I don't mind at all. I'm not willing to learn Japanese or any other language just to play a video game, much less pay more than I would on the eShop. People sure as hell complain about digital prices, but not importing for more than if the game was in their region, and I just don't get it...
I WAS very close to importing Jump Stars on the DS, but I decided I didn't want want to pay more than I should for a game they didn't intend for me to play in the first place, especially in Japanese.
There's pretty much literally no reason to import from anywhere except Japan.
The only things I've ever imported were the CPP XL, and the DS Lite internet browser when it wasn't inthe U.S. yet.

it's ok to import when you think it is worth it just not for others to do so when they think it's worth it. you don't care, you don't get it, so it should not exist.

Things I've imported for PS3:

Okami HD from Japan (because I wanted a disc). Full English support.
Wipeout HD from UK( because I wanted a disc).
WRC 2 from UK(never released in the US).
Momuru-kun from Japan (never released in US). Japanese language, but it's a shmup, so no big deal.

So language hasn't been an issue for me.

Why would Namco Banday or Atlus be against region free consoles, for them it would only mean that some of their japan exclusive games will get extra sales abroad... Console makers and developers lose money because of region lock... the people that want region lock are local retailers in countries other than U.S. who stand to lose sells if people find cheaper to import from U.S. (who gets the cheapest game prices out of all countries)... Console makers introduce region lock to placate retailers because otherwise they may punish the console with less promotion/shelf space if they thing the console maker policy is costing them sells... However if all three consoles are region free there is not much retailers can do other than giving up on selling video games altogether.

So yes Nintendo needs to remove region lock on Wii U and 3DS Asap......

Some of the reasons were already said, like currency exchange and control over the market. I believe companies taking more control over their markets is a good thing, that's why I didn't care about Xbox One's used game or required online. I can deal with that, but I don't have to since they went back.
I saw the benefits they were trying to get across, but pushing digital will basically give the benefits they were aiming for anyway. In otherwords, I expect less discs since the used game thing went through. It works either way for me, honestly, but it definitely is better.

It's not that I think it shouldn't exist. It's just not a good argument to have against any other console. If region locking isn't your thing, just don't buy a Nintendo console, that's all it comes down to.
I'm fine with alot of what Nintendo does, because it's not my business. They can do whatever they want. I just sit back and watch.
I'm not for or against region locking. I just don't get what the big deal is.
You're not gonna convince me region locking is important if I've already drawn the conclusion that it doesn't matter either way for me.

I like region free consoles although I had one experience with LittleBigPlanet on PS3 where I bought it used, and someone switched the UK box art with American box art for some reason, and the people at the store had no idea. I went home to find out that it was the UK version of the game and I couldn't download and DLC...Luckily I got a North American version after so everything was fine after that

It's very easy to say there are no benefits for a region-free console when you're from the US. You get low prices and everything is in your language so why bother? The thing is a lot of the countries in the "Europe" region ALSO speak English and DO pay much higher prices than the US does for no obvious reasons.

When the RRP for New Super Luigi U is $60AU and I can find with a trivial google a US copy for $36AU including shipping to Australia. Do you understand now why it's annoying outside of your bubble?

Yes. I do understand the differences between regions. I think the currency exchange rate is the real culprit here. The only way anyone can change that is if Aussies invest their money to a country with weak currency. I'm not sure if that's how it works honestly, but it sounds right to me.

Region-locking technology is one of the ways that companies were allowed to market their products into new regions. For example, during the Cold War, USA companies were not allowed to produce and sell technology that was equal-to or greater-than what they sold in the US. The full reason for this was to prevent other countries from becoming more technologically advanced than the US.

Region-locking allows companies to regulate where the technology is available with regards to country law. For example, in France* it is illegal for anyone to sell or promote Nazi materials. A game that features Nazis and their symbol may get France upset. Region-locking the game/console and preventing a copy of that game from being released in PAL is one way to control the game and comply with France's law. Otherwise they may have their ENTIRE company's products being prevented from sale or even legal ramifications like the seizure of company products and/or company grounds until payment as stated by law. This also affects types of sales too. Some countries prevent sales on digital content alone (DLC). Others prevent sales of digital (DLC) to go for the same price as physical copies.

  • Note, I am vaguely aware of this law and may have my facts incorrect and/or inaccurate. Additionally, this is suppose to be an example of a law that could be violated, not specifically me saying that this particular law has been used for this purpose in the past or that I believe that it will be used for such in the future.

Another reason is for staggered launches. For example, the Mii Plaza update was great... but was only updated for PAL and Japan. Why? No clue. But a possible reason why is the fact that there was an error. If the region-locked update was available worldwide, there would have been many more systems locked up with the plaza. With the region-lock, there are fewer people incredibly upset with the company while they correct the issue.

Staggered launches also prevents the ENTIRE WORLD from demanding a new product when it was only going to be launched in a selected area initially. Imagine the rush for online-orders if Nintendo's WiiU was only released by region until backorder demand ceased. If the WiiU was region-free and had English as an option, the entire US may have continued to online-order it if it was initially only released in Japan. This would cause Japan's stock to plummet and would force Nintendo to continue producing the console for Japan's market while people in NA and PAL would still be wondering when the system will be launched - especially if it is already available in their languages...

Note that these are just reasons why this concept exists. I do not fully agree with it, however I do see the reason why it is still used. Still wish that NOA and NOE would stop having "No Export for You" occur...

What you are sayng may have had a hint of truth in terms of the Aussie dollar's buying power before the GFC when AU$1=US$0.70 on average,

You also have to remember that globally, the US hassles countries with protectionist trade polices to subscribe to "free-trade" aggreements but the reality is it's typically a one-way street with US goosd going out and very little going back the other way. That's my simple understanding why the US economy - up until recent years - has been so strong.

Any attempts by foreign companies to make an impact in the US market usually find themseves the targets of subtle xenophobicly-based marketing. Console gaming examples include the US gaming press during the first 6-18 months of the PS3 and more recently the FUD surrounding the Wii U from the same people. Other goods andservices won't float until a U.S. company "invents" or develops it.

However, the US economy has been that crap since the GFC, that we in Australia enjoyed dollar for dollar parity for about 12 months or more with th the AU$ only starting to take a dive the last week or so.

The truly galling thing is we have been paying the same amount for a game as we were pre-GFC, so what this means is that as the Aussie dollar was stronger, we've in fact been ripped off masively by software companies and middle-men throughout this period and actually subsidising you lot! :)

Throw into the mix that this may be partly due to having to pay and wait for translations which Aussies, Kiwis, and Brits don't need ( with apologies to my Euro buddies) the whole tying up of game releases and pricing based on now-irrelevant TV standards is about as big a dinosaur as the RIAA trying to maintain it's stranglehold on music distribution.

Umm, the prices I compared were both converted to AUD. The Aussie dollar is slightly weaker than it was a few months ago but it's still hovering at ~$0.90US. It was closer to $1.15US for quite a while before that. All of this is beside the point however because there's still this huge price gap even when you include currency conversion and shipping. So my point remains, it's easy for you to talk about how it's a non-issue when you're living in the country most of the west are looking at purchasing games from.

With a few exceptions where something is released in EU but not NA. I'm sure you remember project Rainfall......
