Nintendo would be missing a HUGE opportunity by not making a Metroid FPS in the style of Prime, on the other hand most of the original team that developed those games have moved on. Still, the one thing Nintendo is missing from its consoles are the shooters that are, like it or not, hugely popular these days.

That said, I was refering to Metroid Prime 2. Everyone seems to forget that had stock-standard, barebones shooter multiplayer modes, and no wonder, it was crap. No one wanted to play it, and it just took up space that could've been used to enhance the singleplayer game.

I think it was less about people not wanting to play Echoes' multiplayer, and more about people being unable to play that mode of the game as it required other people. It wasn't until the Nintendo DS generation that Nintendo started adding bots to their multiplayer games, enabling the experience without others, and improved upon the connection between players local and online. Echoes' multiplayer suffered from not being easily accessible. I'm sure if it were given bots and online as Hunters has in the Trilogy release, that multiplayer would be widely played and certainly remembered. It's a poor excuse for Nintendo to look at that multiplayer and decide multiplayer isn't worth the effort when Metroid Prime Hunters greatly expanded that experience and still was able to be a great Metroid game.

I just can't see how Nintendo would be able to add multiplayer to Metroid or Starfox without it being too similar to something Xbox 360 offered in Halo and Gears of War.

If Starfox was multiplayer, that could easily become a Halo + Gears of War mixed game. The 3rd person view of Starfox is like Gears of War, while still retaining vehicles and such that Gears doesn't have(while Halo has vehicles).

As for Metroid, there are aliens of equal intelligence that would seem completely random, but there's hardly ever an alien of humanoid form that there's an abundance of besides the space pirates. Samus explores by herself, and the types of competitors she tends to have are "lone wolves", as well. Unless you count space pirates as a possible group to compete against, there's not much else, as the only other characters that were unique were the other hunters in Prime: Hunters and 3: Corruption

I'm not trying to dictate your guys' tastes in games or anything. I just think that everyone would be alot more satisfied with a Starfox multiplayer and possibly restricting the next Metroid game to some sort of co-op, but not full out multiplayer.

Nintendo has a really different way of deciding what games have what, compared to Microsoft. They just don't seem to focus on the same aspects of their games that they used to when the GCN was around and the early days of DS.

Unpopular opinion, but I do.

The atmosphere and world building in Prime is amazing, but FPSs really just aren't my style. Cutscenes aside, I had more fun playing Other M. I'll take an action game with good mechanics over an FPS with great mechanics any day.

For Starfox I would rather see something closer to Star Wars Battlefront or Battlefield. More grand scale and less arena battling. The different characters could translate to different classes but the biggest thing would be capturing the arcade feel in multiplayer, similar to Battlefront... but this is all opinion

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.

I actually agree alot with this. I think having a cover based system while still being able to have vehicles is important, though, which is why I brought up that Gears and Halo lack one or the other.

You read my mind about the large scale battleground thing. Some of the stages in Starfox Assault were pretty big. Ultimately, I think a game like Starfox Assault being overhauled in almost every way(gameplay like cover and vehicles, graphics) is the way to go. Single player wise, the Arwing on-rails levels were alot more interesting in Assault in comparison to 64, if you ask me, but that was mainly because GCN was powerful as hell compared to anything before that.

Nintendo seriously isn't gonna be messing around if/when they release a new Metroid or Starfox on Wii U.

EDIT: We're talking like 32 players in a huge level with various vehicles and cover based combat, here. At least, that's what I have in mind. The Cornerian Army vs. some sort of Andross army with equal amount of members in each army, somehow.

I am not sure how important a cover system is but having more geometry that a player can take cover behind would be nice, such as small walls players can duck behind. I do agree that Starfox Assault is a very fun game. While the levels in Assault were big for 4 players they would need much bigger levels for anything much more.

Yup. You get what I'm saying.

I'm not sure if you played Medal of Honor: Heroes 2, but that was a blast to play online with the Wii Zapper and 31 other players besides yourself. That game was more fun than anything CoD ever did. I can tell you that much.

I actually did play that game. I thought it was the best Medal of Honor in a long time, not that I am super up-to-date on the series. I got it too late to have any huge online matches but what I did play was very solid

I understand people wanting a return to side-scrolling metroid and I'm sure it would be great but I think the timing is wrong. Nintendo has returned to 2D style for many of their franchises recently and the Wii U really needs a more 3D adventure game — Wind Waker was a remake.

I'd be up for either a Prime style of a more refined version of Other M's style (minus the heavy cut scenes and story). I prefer Prime's first person adventure/shooter style and I feel that would almost sell better right now. The Wii U needs a shooter, and Metroid would fit the bill. Mulitplayer would be fun. Prime 2 and Hunters had the idea, but I feel like it could be perfected on the Wii U.

@DefHalen
I'm not either. That was actually the only one I ever played. The first year it was out had people playing constantly. I hated the EA server's though... Looking back, the online probably wouldn't have existed without that server.

I want the games that Nintendo makes and get's from 3rd party to be exactly as they were on Wii and GCN. Obviously, with the graphic overhaul here and there and superb gameplay(preferably both).

Don't even get me started with Meteos on DS. Best new puzzle game in the past decade(developers from Smash Bros. were involved), IMO. I get pretty carried away thinking of late GCN, early DS times Please forgive me.

xbox has halo, playstation has killzone, like it or not nintendo could use their own shooter, and it could be metroid.

Same here. I actually don't really like Prime 2, and 3 is just barely making the cut with the motion controls, IMO. Hate to be that guy, but Metroid Prime 1 was awesome, then Hunters had the multiplayer. Aside from those 2, and Super Metroid Fusion, of course, I couldn't really get into the other games.

I'd argue that Halo is somewhat what a multiplayer Metroid should be like. The comments in this thread are basically asking for exactly that, and I'm not sure if you guys are aware of that.

That's why I'm saying that a game like Starfox, that has animals as the characters, no blood for rated T, more options than a Metroid game would have, and overall have more appeal to a younger audience, while still have a fun game to shoot each other online with, is the answer, in my eyes.

To be completely on topic. A Metroid game is gonna happen, but probably not with multiplayer death matches(co-op is probably fine). I say we leave that up to Starfox. That's just me, though. I just gave plenty of reasons why I think that, too.

Killzone is exactly why I don't care about PS4, right now. I'm mainly ok with Halo, because that's basically been Metroid multiplayer all along, IMO.

@Scar392 Prime 1 was the best if you ask me, and it was even better with the trilogy edition, I still liked Prime 3 and to a lesser extent Prime 2(I really hated the ammo and the dual worlds). Halo Multiplayer would honestly be perfect for Metroid, but whos to say Metroid could not have its own multiplayer modes (Nintendo land showing extra possible modes, a sort of reverse horde mode) that are not all run of the mill.

But I think the larger point is simply, Nintendo should strive for a Multiplayer FPS game. As Much as we hate to admit it, flagship titles are now FPS games and metroid has shown it has the potential to be exactly that.

But Halo isn't boring. I mean the AI and sandbox encounters are pretty much known for being completely different and that was a big hook of the series and innovation of the series at the time.

I can't really speak for Killzone. The Vita game looks fun but the PS4 one looks like a pretty bore fest.

But as far as multiplayer goes I really only want two things.

Metroid Blast done in the graphical style of Tradtional Metroid with both co-op and competitive multiplayer.

or the fast paced arena combat from Hunters

"at the time" indeed. Halo has been boring since 3. Though to be fair it's 5 Platinum games and 20 beloved indie titles compared to my incredible apathy to Killzone.
