Topic: So if a new Metroid is coming...

We all knew it was happening, but based on the Metroid pin Reggie wore last night, maybe we will be hearing news about it sooner than later.

So what style of gameplay are you expecting/hoping for?

I myself didn't really get into the Prime series at all, and would much rather prefer a return to the more hardcore side scrolling style. I replayed Super Metroid this past summer and the game still holds up. The graphics, gameplay, atmosphere and music are all still fantastic, even 20 years later. My preference would be that it's on Wii-U in HD, but if it comes out on the 3DS I wouldn't complain either.

My only concern about a new 2D Metroid game is that it will be too easy. I haven't played very much of the new Zelda game yet (just got the Master Sword) but from what I've seen so far, it is MUCH easier than the older games in the series, with a lot more hand holding and simpler puzzles. I would like a new Metroid 2D title to be just as brutal as the past ones, with exploration and trial and error being needed to advance through the world.

Wait.. handholding in A Link Between Worlds..? There's barely any at all. As far as Metroid goes, I'd like to see another one from Retro with a mix of Prime and some Side-Scrolling as well. I just loved the Prime series and it'd be nice to see what they could do with an HD system.

I want something like Prime, most of us im sure are on the same boat that the Wii U needs a shooter and Metroid is the franchise to do the job. Not to mention the Prime series was an excellent game when it came to exploration(tons of nooks and crannies to find), but then you have Hunters which shows Metroid can work multiplayer. Lets also not forget that the Wiimote + Nunchuck work quite well for FPS games compared to a just a controller and the Wii U can offer both options.

If not a FPS, Other M's style could be greatly expanded upon (not the story) in complexity.

2D sidescroller if it's for 3DS, 3D first person or third person game if it's for WiiU.

Not to derail the thread, but there is tons of handholding in A Link Between Worlds. Mind you, this is the opinion of someone who has been playing them since the days of the NES.

The witch that carries you everywhere, temples that have weapons/item indicators outside them to let you know exactly what you need to use inside, puzzles are painfully obvious (so far), NPC's telling you exactly where you need to go and what to do next, don't have to 'earn' access to an item, etc. I have yet to get 'stuck' once in the game, where in the original ALTTP figuring out what to do next was left largely to the player which lead to a sense of accomplishment. This game is great, but it kinda feels like I'm just going though the motions.

Back to Metroid....I can't think of one game that has really successfully meshed together 2D and FPS gameplay into one cohesive and enjoyable experience. I would rather see a game that only features one play style.

I think the Metroid series could be spawn into two: Make Metroid Hunters a spin-off focused on multiplayer with online, Wii Remote and Nunchuk support, all the bells and whistles, and a pure single-player Metroid like Other M.

Yes, Metroid U was implied last night. I'm hoping for a Metroid Prime spiriual successor.

I'm not sure if Reggie really hinted at a metroid or just said something under the pressure. All I know, is that when asked about metroid, Reggie almost said "Of Course" then caught himself. I want a Prime style game.

Maybe I'm imagining things but I don't believe Reggie put that pin on just by coincidence. Nintendo does not play dice with the universe, lol.

Just so long as it's an atmospheric action-adventure game, I don't care what they do. I'd prefer they take the series' gameplay in a new direction, so long as it doesn't lose its key elements, but if it retreads old ground, I won't complain too much.

I'd prefer a prime spiritual successor as well.
In ALBW, they didn't tell you where to go. You could have gone to any of the seven regions, and Hilda would still appear. She just gives a little information. As far as knowing what to use in which temple and fast travel, that's all for convinced. You don't HAVE to use it, but it's there just in case you wanted to go buy a fairy or a heart container before going after the boss.

Of course "the dream" would be a classic 2D Metroid in the style of SM or Fusion, but I don't think it would be a commercially successful choice, at least on WiiU - on the other hand I have loved the Prime serie but I don't want to see another Prime...even though business-speaking it's going to be the best choice Nintendo can make for the franchise and the console.

I think some of the gameplay elements of Other M can be improved and re-used for a next Metroid (much of Other M's control issues for me came from the stubbornness of wanting to use a limited control scheme) - I dunno - I look at Other M and its gameplay style looks more attractive and with more potential than Prime's style, even if Prime is a much better game.

Probably the best thing I can think of for a win-win situation is to have the americans work on a Metroid Prime episode on WiiU and the japanese work on a 2D Metroid on handheld and have them released at the same time.

Top-10 games I played in 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - Rogue Legacy (PS3) - Fallout 3 (PS3) - Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Guns of Boom (MP) - Sky Force Reloaded (MP) - ...

If Nintendo decides make another 2D side scroller for the Wii U, than I give up and will actively hope for the system to fail.

More exploration
Take out the Concentration
Make sure I can move while I'm in First Person.
Extra Difficulty
Maybe take out the auto-lock?

I don't care if it's Prime or a new entry to the series.

The Prime series did for Metroid, what Duke Nukem 3D did for Duke Nukem.
http://www.metacritic.com/game/gamecube/metroid-prime
It dragged Metroid out of the 16bit era and into the now. It allowed you to become Samus and to live in her world. And it did so in a way that even made jaded FPSers and graphic hounds stand up and take notice. It added a level of maturity to the series. It would be a real shame not to return to this direction.

Other M was a major let down for me. The first Metroid game I didn't keep. Super Metroid is amazing, and always will be. It has it's place in history. But I want the series to grow up with me. I feel the same way about Zelda, with Twilight Princess being a major step in the right direction, only to regress afterwards.

Does every series need to 'mature' or grow up? Of course not. Leave the Kirby's and Marios' be. But Metroid has proven to have the legs, and rich history to join the heavy hitters.

Why? The only possibilities for Metroid are for it to be a side scroller, first person or third person game. It's not like any one of those play styles can be more over used than they already have been. And what other 2D sidescrollers has Nintendo made for the Wii-U so far? NSMBU and LuigiU? It's not like that's the only type of game they make.

Shadow Complex on XBLA is a great example of how a good 2D/3D side scrolling adventure game can stil be relevant and fun today.

Well for one thing, I know for sure you haven't played the new Zelda game yet. There is definitely no hand holding (at least it's hidden and optional anyway).
