My custom controls never save and always revert back to defaults
You save it then on the character selection screen you need to tap below the Player 1 button (if you're player 1) and select your save name.
Anyway, I use the B button on pro controllers for jump (so it's the same as most games) and turn off the tap Up to jump. The specials goes to the X button and grab on Y.
I wasn't aware. Cheers for that.

@Moms-Meowth Lol, so classy and sarcastic. Love it."
I usually keep them as they are with the only exceptions being L (and ZL) as the jump button and X for grabbing. I used to hate tap jump back when I would play Melee and Brawl, but I kinda got used to it since I started playing the 3DS version, so now I tend to use both tap and L.
I keep the original controls except on the 3DS version I've switched the L and R (dodge and grab) because I use ZR to grab on Wii U, so it being flipped whenever I switched systems was confusing. I may turn off tap jumping for up tilt, though.
@TheGreatBrawler The problem with stick jumping is, that if more often than not interferes with executing up moves, be it specials, smashes or even regular moves.
In the heat of battle, i rarely have a calm hand to slowly move the stick upwards to do an upward standard and not jump.
Turning off stick jumping get rid of that problem and generally gives you way more con*troll* over your attack direction
And that's why you put c-stick on attack lol, I have no problem doing any tilts at all since then. Smash attacks are also very easy to perform with the analog stick + button as well. Honestly smash attacks as c-stick can be just a waste... that's just my opinion though (that might also change later in the future lol).
I don't have tilt problems or anything. Tap jumps get in the way of my Up-Air but can be solved now.
Just use the c-stick for u air

C-Stick: Tilt Attack
I'm sorry, but when I play as King Dedede, I also do a Smash Attack when I want to use his Tilt Forward. It messes me up constantly. It's so much easier with this. Now, if only there were a way to disable the Tilt Attacks for the analog stick... :/

Hmm I guess I can give tap to jump off a try, I do think that it can help a bit... I get very annoyed whenever I do second jump instead of first off the stage then I can't recover... maybe tap off will fix that.

Now I'll be that lone Smash guy who uses tap jump, lol. I used x/y to jump before, but I just learnt tap to jump and it's been with me ever since.
God first.

Never said I will stick with it but if tap jump works better then stick with it lol

lol I've played the game with the wiimote only since brawl and can hardly get used to the stick controls of the gamepad or pro controller. I'm getting there though. I guess I'm the only person to ever smash level 9 at ease with this control setup...
Oh well. It resulted in me trying to turn tap to jump off, while that didn't do any wonders for me. As soon as I'm practically only jumping in stick mode with the buttons, I will turn it off though. Easy up attacks while standing are great.
Wii U Gamepad and Pro Controller
A - Attack
B - Special
X/Y - Jump, even if I never use those buttons to jump.
ZL - Grab
ZR- Shield
L/R - Same as their Z counterparts respectively. I never use it, though.
Tap Jump enabled. Right Stick used for Smash attacks.
Wiimote + Nunchuk
A - Attack
B - Shield
C - Special
Z - Grab
A+B - Shield
DPad - Specials
Tap Jump enabled. Shake to Smash disabled.
3DS
Default controls. Tap to Jump enabled.
GameCube
A - Attack
B - Special
X/Y - Jump, though I rarely use it.
L - Grab
R - Shield
Z - Grab, Never use it.
Tap to Jump enabled. C-Stick used for Smashes, though I rarely use it.
I used the Wiimote a lot in Brawl. Now I can't seem to use it at all, as I can't stand it. Defending is a chore when using the Wiimote.
God first.

I basically have the controls the same as the default except for the shield and grab. I have shield assigned to ZL and Grab assigned to ZR. It's just way too awkward to use the L and R buttons

Pro Controller/GamePad/3DS
X - attack
Y - special
A - jump
B - grab
ZR/R - shield
ZL/L - jump (only used when charging attacks such as Hammer Flip)
Right stick - smash
Tap jump - off
If I ever have to use a Classic Controller, I'd probably use the same but with X and B swapped (like how I had it in Brawl, except the shoulders were the defaults).
