Topic: Smash Bros U custom controls or default?

Posts 1 to 20 of 33

I'm using the Wii U pro controller myself and I'm having a hard time with the default controls for some reason. What controls setups are you guys using?

I cannot with the standard controls. I'm not old school Smash Bros enough. That jump button...

Wii U: rosekotasek

Mostly play Mario Kart 8. :)

The controls are fully customisable though. You can input your name and for each name that you set up, the controls are fully customisable for every possible controller that can be used with the game (Gamepad/Pro Controller/Classic Controller, 3DS, GameCube, Wii Remote, Wii Remote + Nunchuk).

I typically use the Pro Controller though, and I haven't had any problems with it.

"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"

I know, that's why I'm asking for some custom control schemes others are using that I might like

I use custom controls

Attack = A
Grab = B
Shield = Y, L, R
Special = X
Jump = Left Analog Stick Up, ZL, ZR
Smash Attack = Right Analog Stick

The default controls suck. I don't know anyone who plays with them. Using up as jump is also a bad idea.

Not really. You should be able to have the option to use the D-Pad to move. It's restricted to just taunts. I'd rather switch between them. The analog stick is ok for casual gaming but the D-Pad would be much easier to move around and play 1 vs. 1 For Glory matches. The analog stick just sucks for those matches.

The 3DS is actually easier to play with than the Pro Controller but you can't use it in online play for some reason.

I don't use default controls, except for the 3DS.

  • Wii U Gamepad and Pro Controller
    A - Attack
    B - Special
    X/Y - Jump, even if I never use those buttons to jump.
    ZL - Grab
    ZR- Shield
    L/R - Same as their Z counterparts respectively. I never use it, though.
    Tap Jump enabled. Right Stick used for Smash attacks.
  • Wiimote + Nunchuk
    A - Attack
    B - Shield
    C - Special
    Z - Grab
    A+B - Shield
    DPad - Specials
    Tap Jump enabled. Shake to Smash disabled.
  • 3DS
    Default controls. Tap to Jump enabled.
  • GameCube
    A - Attack
    B - Special
    X/Y - Jump, though I rarely use it.
    L - Grab
    R - Shield
    Z - Grab, Never use it.
    Tap to Jump enabled. C-Stick used for Smashes, though I rarely use it.

Pro Controller:
'Tap Jump' Off
A - Attack
B/X - Jump
Y - Special
R - Shield
L - Grab
I like tap jump off so it doesn't get in the way of Up-Air attacks and I don't accidentally use it, but I can't perform Up-Specials when I go straight into a dash with characters like Lil. Mac some reason. It's needed for the Up or Down Throw combo's.

My custom controls never save and always revert back to defaults

I usually disable the stick jump on all devices, thats just silly, and mainly use the gamepad sith only a single customization:
Instead of having Grab and Block both on eachs shoulder button side, i changed it so that only one action is on one side of the controller. Pretty much like Smash 3DS is set up.
Much easier on the muscle memory when switching from the handheld to the home console version and back.

I do much better with tap jump... what's so wrong about tap jump? Just set your c-stick to attack then you are set really...
Anyways here's mine:
Attack: A/X/C-Stick
Special: B/Y
Shield/Dodge: R/ZR
Grab: L/ZL

I use gamepad/wii u pro controller, I use gamepad more though, but both feel same.

CapeSmash

I use the same as default, except I turned tap jump off, L/R as grabs, and ZL/ZR as shields.

I use Gamepad/Pro controller for now. I just need to find a GC controller adapter...

@TheGreatBrawler The problem with stick jumping is, that if more often than not interferes with executing up moves, be it specials, smashes or even regular moves.
In the heat of battle, i rarely have a calm hand to slowly move the stick upwards to do an upward standard and not jump.
Turning off stick jumping get rid of that problem and generally gives you way more controll over your attack direction

You save it then on the character selection screen you need to tap below the Player 1 button (if you're player 1) and select your save name.

Anyway, I use the B button on pro controllers for jump (so it's the same as most games) and turn off the tap Up to jump. The specials goes to the X button and grab on Y.

And that's why you put c-stick on attack lol, I have no problem doing any tilts at all since then. Smash attacks are also very easy to perform with the analog stick + button as well. Honestly smash attacks as c-stick can be just a waste... that's just my opinion though (that might also change later in the future lol).

Funny thing is, I rarely seem to have a problem doing up-smashes at all. I don't know whether I should start using the R-Stick more often, as the problem I have is performing Smashes with the A+[insert direction here] properly; either it is in the wrong direction, or I perform a normal attack.

I don't have tilt problems or anything. Tap jumps get in the way of my Up-Air but can be solved now.
