I would rather have ditched motion controls entirely and I actually love motion controls and the pointer! I even play MK8 with just the Wiimote. I really help Zelda U has a pointer that, you know, shows up where you're pointing it and really anything else at all for sword fighting other than what SS had. Flying the bird is particularly joyless and cumbersome. Always wished I could skip those parts and just get to the destination.

Because he was talking about the Skyward Sword HD leak that occurred with the Twilight Princess Leak.

If the game actually gets announced as a VC title I'll reopen the thread, otherwise stop face palming, it's very rude (as @Tasuki pointed out).

I loved Skyward Sword's controls. Well, except when flying the loftwing, that I agree.

I don't mind having to use the GamePad in a future remake, it'd be a different experience.

Yeah, me too. The sword controls were amazing and I found it quite intriguing using the pointer not in the usual sense. You had more freedom and the game played very fast. Personally, I didn't have any problems with calibration. I didn't calibrate one single time while playing the game. I just had to center the pointer with [control Pad down] but that was very intuitive.

However, the flying with motion control was very unnecessary. I agree.

@Chandlero: I stopped checking the Splatoon thread a long time ago, that one ended up being 95% requests for multiplayer matches.

Interesting. I get it if some people might find the sword controls challenging (I didn't, I actually loved them), but the flying was even easier for me than sword fights. And I can't imagine playing that game without a Wiimote...

What pointer? There was no pointer function (I mean the infrared in the sensor bar), the game only used the Wiimote's accelerometer (tilting the Wiimote+). And I had to calibrate several times, but most of the time centering with the d-pad was enough. Interesting though that you also had problems with flying, that was really the easiest motion control part of the game for me (and I loved the sword controls too).

That sounds like your Wiimote was defective, what you described never happened to me. Or did you maybe get the controls wrong and actually pointed the Wiimote at the sensor bar? SS doesn't use the sensor bar, you move everything by tilting the Wiimote+. So you didn't have to point anything anywhere.

I think you just got it wrong. The fights against Ghirahim were hard because you actually had to fool him, like a real person in real life. It was the opposite of "swipe a line that matches another line", you had to surprise him with your movement. The sword fighting was very accurate for me, but then again, if your Wiimote was maybe broken, that would explain it. Or did you happen to play it on Dolphin emulator? I tried that once (I was curious how it looks and runs in FHD with AA) and the sword controls were just totally messed up, the sword would never do what I wanted and it constantly had to be recalibrated. All of this didn't occur with the original version on my Wii though.


From what I have read online, it seems like a lot of people have misunderstood how the controls of Skyward Sword work. I read so many comments were people claimed the motion controls were broken or inaccurate and therefore they hated the game. Obviously they just didn't (want to) understand how it works, maybe some people are just not able to adapt to new things. Sure, it took a little bit of adjusting, but the motion controls themselves were totally fine and actually worked like a charm once you got the hang of it.
I can't imagine to play a Zelda game without motion controls anymore, if Zelda U should'n support the Wiimote+ I'd actually be disappointed!

You shouldn't have to adjust or get used to playing with crap. If the majority of players dislike the controls then its the game which is at fault, not the players.

@Bass_X0: I think you're greatly exaggerating the dislike for the controls in Skyward Sword. If 'the majority' didn't like them, it wouldn't have received critical acclaim, GOTYs and this 'debate' wouldn't exist, as most games with 'crap' controls don't have anyone saying they're good, because it's a fairly simple thing to assess. The original Scribblenauts, Tomb Raider and Resident Evil (not the remake) got panned and rightly so. I think what you're doing is the definition of hyperbole.

Yes, I used "pointer" in the sense of having a cursor on screen. I was aware that you don't need the sensor bar for this and I found it very convenient. Choosing items without pointing at the TV was very great. But a lot of people complained about that new "pointer" feeling.

I don't have any problems with the flying. I just found it unnecessary. There was no advantage using motions controls. There should have been at least a option for using the control stick while flying.

I totally agree with you. I loved the fighting and controls in SS. I really played the whole game while standing in front of the TV. I was so into the game and I really felt the sword fights!

@Chandlero: well yeah that's always the one thing that really bugs me about the SS hate train, or at least with the controls. You knew that it was using Motion + before you bought it, and even 5 year olds can figure out how to use it to its best effect. So to then hear/read people say that SS was a bad/terrible/broken (lol) game just because they didn't like 'the waggle controls' or 'waving my arms like a lunatic' (cue the GIF) just means to me that you didn't even give the Motion controls a chance to win you over. It's like going into a Mario game and deciding you don't want to jump more than 2/3 pixels high or not blowing sruff up in a Just Cause game or not using using ADS in a modern FPS, if you're deliberately too lazy to even embrace the game in the way it's meant to be played then it's hard to take you seriously.

And trust me I hate as much as the next guy the whole 'you're playing it wrong!' or 'git gud' brigade and I'm not going to say that to cover all of SS's problems (of which there are quite a few if you're picky) but honestly if you're just waggling the Remote around then you're obviously going to have a bad time and to then blame the game after that is quite sad.

It's either all that or you had a faulty Wii Remote, Motion Plus adapted or a Sensor Bar. Either way it's very, very harsh to blame the game. My take on it anyway.
