Considering the Skylanders games sell rather well on Nintendo consoles each year, I was shocked to find out that we didn't have a thread for the latest instalment.

My question to you:
Who is your favourite Skylander, and what kind of character are you looking forward to creating in Skylanders Imaginators?

@gizmor Thankfully, Crash and Cortex are timed exclusives in the PS4 Starter Pack, however, it isn't known how long they will remain a timed exclusive. Although, if you do purchase the PS4 Starter Pack to get Crash and Cortex, they will both work in the Wii U version of the game and unlock the Crash level.

I wouldn't call this a solid argument for not investing in toys-to-life anymore. I think what many people don't realise is that the discontinuation of Disney Infinity was not due to poor sales of the game. Disney didn't just shut down Disney Infinity; they shut down their entire gaming division, and it had little to do with Disney Infinity's sales figures, and more to do with the gaming industry as a whole. In fact, Disney Infinity managed to financially turn around Disney Interactive, certainly helping with the almost $1.5bn loss they faced from 2008 to 2013.

The problem with Disney Infinity was the pressure it faced from its sales targets, and the video game industry itself. Disney was expecting this game to completely overturn those $1.5bn losses into some kind of profits. And it did profit a fair bit, but it just wasn't enough. Keeping Disney's gaming division afloat was expensive, and Disney Infinity alone just wasn't capable of not letting it drown. And so, the expensive nature of the gaming industry managed to wipe out a beloved contender in the toys-to-life genre. I should also mention that Disney realised that licencing their properties to third parties (such as EA with Star Wars: Battlefront, and TT Games with LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens) was a whole lot cheaper than developing games in house.

As for your argument that there 'no more amiibo', that's simply untrue. To name a few upcoming amiibo:

  • 8-Bit Link
  • Ocarina of Time Link
  • Toon Link
  • Toon Zelda
  • Archer Link
  • Rider Link
  • Guardian
  • Bayonetta
  • Corin
  • Cloud

While Nintendo are more than likely holding back any more new amiibo releases until the NX arrives, they certainly aren't stopping making them. Considering their success, the NX will most likely have amiibo support and will see new amiibo released alongside the new titles coming to NX.

@gizmor In comparison to that of Skylanders and LEGO Dimensions, it certainly is. While every single Skylander ever made works within the latest game, they're restricted to Skylanders games. Meanwhile, my Ganondorf amiibo is compatible with Super Smash Bros., Super Mario Maker, Hyrule Warriors, Captain Toad, Mario Party 10 and Star Rush, Chibi Robo, Yoshi's Wooly World, Twilight Princess HD, Metroid Prime: Federation Force, and more. That's an incredible number of games, with only more to come, which puts amiibo in it's very own, very special league.
