What games have done the things Captain Toad and Splatoon are planning on doing besides 3D World obviously, or are these games truly original? And are any upcoming Nintendo games truly new, original ideas in all honesty?

It depends on which feature in Captain Toad/Splatoon you are talking about. Captain Toad is a platformer. Splatoon is a shooter.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Well I guess I'm asking are they doing anything completely new, or at least an original overall concept?

Well, there have been games about painting, there have even been games about painting more of an area than your opponent. What is unique about Splatoon is the way they present it, in a 3rd Person Shooter view. Also the way your characters an interact with your paint(ink).

Captain Toad is expanding on what they did in 3D World. What made the levels in 3D World so unique is how you interact with them in contrast to how you interact with levels in the rest of the game. Captain Toad is more about exploring and less about Platforming (but will probably still be in the platforming genre). You are not given a level with a straight path, but instead are able to manipulate objects in order to reach the goal.

You could manipulate objects in Mario vs. DK, though.
