Well they tried to be more story driven with Skyward Sword but most people didn't like that. I don't think they're gonna try that again so soon. I predict Zelda Wii U will have a barebones story and little character development, but with open world "sandbox" gameplay!
Super Paper Mario's story was amazing? It had absolutely nothing to do with Mario. Really, it came across like a story from a TV show (maybe a Doctor Who season) that had Mario and co thrown in at the last minute and gameplay that existed solely to make creators feel 'clever' at the expense of fun.
That said, a deeper story can be done well. It's just Nintendo hasn't really pulled one off yet.
I thought TP and SS did a good job of fleshing out the characters more. I look at the master sword in a whole new light now. Keeping the story focused on the three triforce blessed is a strength of the series in my opinion. It gives the series more fluidity that more developed stories can't have and keeps them for the most part from writing themselves into a corner.

ALBW was one of the best Zelda games. So, no. I think the Zelda team are good where they are.
And please don't use Super Mario Sunshine as an example of a good story. The voice acting alone is evidence that Nintendo is on the right track with their interactive storybook storytelling instead.

The less story in the Zelda series the better. All of the great zelda games were about gameplay, puzzle solving, and hack n slash mechanics. People yapping on the screen doesn't mesh with what makes the games fun. Play a traditional JRPG if you want more story and character development.
Oh Sahasrahla, you want to give me these Pegasus boots? Great kthnxbye.
I'd much rather prefer that than a 20 minute back story on the boots.

this is a boring opinion
I'm not saying you're wrong necessarily but it's a boring opinion.
I was more bored in recent 3D Zelda games waiting to get to the first dungeon, honestly.

Essentially you're saying The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II: The Adventure, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, are all boring.
Hell even OoT had limited story elements. The weaker games in the franchise like Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess were heavy in story. It's not necessary for the series.
Anytime Nintendo tries to add a deep story to one of their flagship titles it never seems to end well (think Mario Sunshine, Super Paper Mario, Metroid Other M and Smash Bros Brawl). I'd like to see them give it another shot but they do they need to hire professional writers (and if they get voice actors as well if they choose to add voice acting).
Mario Sunshine had a "deep" story, and since when does Subspace Emissary count as a "deep" story?
My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.
@SkywardLink98 and its considered the black sheep of the Mario games. The voice acting was bad and overall the story was weird (Peach being Bowser Jr's mom, think about that for a minute). There's a reason Nintendo dropped the deep story telling for the Galaxy games (outside of Rosalina's stories but those were optional).
As someone mentioned to me earlier Brawl was more fan service then anything else, so I guess it gets a pass.

No, I'm saying that "LOL BUT MY GAMEPLAY!111!" is a tired meaningless opinion with no nuance, creativity or details. I mean, I think COD is an overrated series but that's also a boring opinion that's not worth even saying at this point.

Haha, as far as I could tell the "story" in Subspace Emissary consisted entirely of "oh no, bad guys, take 'em out" and "oh no, a boss, kill it".
I felt the characters in Fire Emblem Awakening were all shallow in comparison with Fire Emblem 7, 8 or even Ike's games. They honestly just seem to be people with a quirk rather then real people. I guess the relationships with the children were interesting but when you had characters like Legault, who I can't even begin to describe to someone like Gaius, whos character is defined as a guy who likes sweets I feel like its taken a lot of steps back. I don't know if its just because everyone played Awakening and didn't play the others or I am looking back on these games with rose tinted glasses. Regardless I am glad Awakening was successful even though I hated it because all the ones I liked were barely noticed :{
Anyway Zelda games are the apex of videogames, so no need to conform to lesser games. even if they are quite good.
Sunshine had a deep story? I don't know if I'm missing something here...
I did really like Brawl's story, even if it was made up of fanservice. It was entertaining and enjoyable to me. Same thing with Super Paper Mario, but admittedly the story does have a different style (as does the game). But I don't want to get too off-topic here...
The thing about Zelda is that it's more or less supposed to be an interactive storybook. It relies heavily on injecting your own thoughts and emphasis into the characters and story. If you're a parent or have ever read to small children, it's probably pretty relatable. You make up your own voices for characters, often silly and exaggerated, and put emphasis wherever you feel necessary. To involve both the story teller and the audience in this imaginative narrative is where all the strength of the story and characters comes from.
I agree with this. I've never really had a problem with stories in Zelda games. I don't need a super deep and complex story to enjoy the game, the characters and the world. Though if written well, I do enjoy it. Oot, TP, and Skyward Sword I liked the story elements of.
Honestly, if the story is well written enough without sacrificing anything else for its sake...I'm satisfied.

(I would rather have a little of both tbh)
Wait, what? I was always under the impression that Skyward Sword was hated for it's overloaded motion controls and lak of explorable overworld. The story was fine, but limited by having to tie in with the convoluted Zelda-canon.
