To be honest, I think there are many better potential devs for a Wii U Metroid game than Platinum Games. So no, they shouldn't be handed Metroid for Wii U.

I am most definitely a fan of Mr. Kubrick, sir. Ashamed to say I have still not seen BARRY LYNDON.
As for the discussion at hand, I think perhaps STAR FOX would be a better fit for Platinum. I still think their take on Metroid would be fast paced insanity, and I'm fine with that as long as the exploration aspect is perfect. Retro hit the nail on the head with the Prime series. OTHER:M needed way more exploration.
When tasked with making a Metal Gear game, they instead made a DMC game with a Metal Gear coat of paint. I don't think these guys are flexible at all.
This is not true at all.
Metal Gear Rising was supposed to be a ridiculous action game regardless IIRC, but was given to Platinum after the previous team failed to make it.
People who play Metal Gear not expecting crazy blown out of proportion levels of ridiculous are stupid.

It's like, I just love a cowboy
You know
I'm just like, I just, I know, it's bad
But I'm just like
Can I just like, hang off the back of your horse
And can you go a little faster?!

I haven't gotten around to watching Barry Lyndon yet either. I have watched Dr. Strangelove at least 10 times by now so that almost makes up for it.
I'm yet to play Other M, I've watched some gameplay of it and I like the look of how it plays but the cut scenes really put me off playing it. I'm not a huge Metroid fan (I've only played Super and Prime 1), but what I love about both games so far is the atmosphere and sense of exploration. From what I can tell, Other M doesn't pull that off.
A lot of people seem to be really underestimating Platinum Games on here. They might not make much other than action games lately, but they have a lot of staff that have worked on other projects at different studios.
For instance, Hideki Kamiya worked on Resident Evil 2 and Devil May Cry 1. Both games had great atmosphere and the latter's map design is not so far removed from a Metroid game.

If you can get for cheap (I've seen it for $10) OTHER:M is worth a play-through. The graphics are awesome and switching to first person by pointing the WiiMote at the screen works really well. When green flashes on the edge of the visor you jerk the 'mote to the side and do a dodge manuver. You should play PRIME 3. It has possibly the best use of Wii Motion Control next to SKYWARD SWORD.

Go play ALIENS: INFESTATION on DS. It's decent if you're an ALIENS fan, and it's pretty much WayForward's METROID. Sadly, it's nowhere near as good as METROID: FUSION.
