Topic: Should Metroid control like Splatoon?

First off, to the mods; this is not a Splatoon topic. This is also a discussion about other games, so it really doesn't belong as a reply to the already existing Splatoon topic. That said:

So after obsessively playing Splatoon for the past week, I got to thinking about one of my other favorite franchises (and yes, Splatoon is already on that list); Metroid. Even back on the gamecube, Metroid was criticized for not having dual analog control, and that was somewhat backpedaled with the Wii Remote and Nunchuck Prime 3 and later the Prime Trilogy as well. It wasn't quite dual analog, but it was very similar in that Samus strafes with left and right and aims with a separate mechanism not attached to the left stick and also not attached to the R button. No more deadzone for resting your hands. (I don't know about you but I was able to rest my hands just fine for Splatoon while playing. Not so much for Metroid Trilogy.) So for future Metroid titles and to people who have already tried Splatoon; Do you think Metroid should have Splatoon's control scheme?

Think about it. Just use left stick to move, right stick to look around, move the gamepad to aim, ZR to fire. All this is obvious enough, but how about ZL to Morph Ball, and have it be a hold instead of toggle? If the transition is made a little quicker, this would feel very much like Splatoon's squid forms. You could even go up walls with Spider Ball! Then there's R to fire missiles, X to jump, and then use the other face buttons and D-Pad for weapons and visor switching. You could even use L as a kind of quick-scan rather than have that as it's own visor.

But what about other games? Would Star Fox be a better game if it controlled like Splatoon? The on-foot missions would certainly be improved. How about Kid Icarus? No more hand cramps! Luigi's Mansion would have you immersed in a much more interactive perspective. Maybe even Mario and Zelda could benefit from a motion-assisted camera.

What do you think?

I think it's a good idea. Especially since the controls would be perfect for the game. (Although jumping by pressing X is a bad idea.)

Eh, I'm not sure. I did try the gyro controls in Splatoon, but I soon turned them off and never looked back. I guess it would be nice to have the option, as long as it can be turned off there as well.

As long as I can turn them off and play normally I don't care what they do

It would be a nice option (choice is always nice) but I think I would prefer dual analog.

I'd rather they just stick with motion controls. I don't get why the industry has it's heart set on going backwards to the right stick, an invention not really designed to be ideal for aiming a cursor in the first place.

Comparing the RA stick to motion control is like comparing the keyboard nub that laptops used to have to a trackpad. There isn't really a contest. One allows free movement in a space mapped directly to the screen, the other is a resistive interface that resets to a center position.

I dunno...rather have multiple options, also depends on what type of genre the game becomes. For a first-person style I prefer the Wiimote+Nunchuck combo, the Splatoon controls are fine...but after a bit my wrists become sore/tired from the Gamepad.

I always thought that it made sense for a third person Metroid on the U to use the GamePad as a first person view for firing missiles. I quite like the Splatoon controls, so I wouldn't mind if Metroid had something similair. Of course with the option to turn off motion controls for those that don't like it.

That would assume that the next Metroid game would play in 3rd-person or first-person.
The control scheme would work well with the Prime games, but the next Metroid game should really return to the 2D plane, instead. As much as I love the Prime Trilogy, I'm not willing to trust anyone except for Retro Studios with 3D Metroid, and they cited before that they're not going to make another Prime game.

Motion control only? No. Dual stick control and option to turn motion control off? Yes! Yeah, hopefully the next game will have better aiming mechanics.

Because I want to sit on my butt and not wave my arms around? That's why I don't want motion controls ever. But I will admit that prime trilogy is awesome with them. However, I would like dual analog even more.

I hope the next Metroid is ready for the NX launch and built around dual 3D tracking wands.

I'd want the left analog stick for run and sidestep, right analog for turning/looking/hip fire, left bumper for jumping, left trigger for iron sights while aiming using motion control, right trigger for rapid fire, right bumper for single shots and charge shots, face buttons for ammunition selection and visors, R3 for ball mode, and L3 for dashing.

No, Metroid should crawl, Metroid should crawl.

In all seriousness the Prime morph ball and squid form are somewhat similar in concept.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

I agree completely with you here. I could never get into Metroid Prime's controls, which always weakened the game for me.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong here, but that's the opposite with me. Playing Metroid Prime with the Wiimote + Nunchuck was terrible for me. My arm would get tired after a couple hours. Splatoon, or any other game played with the gamepad for that matter, is completely fine.

@Megajack Did you not like both controls systems or only motion controls?

I think if it happens they should go for multiple controls systems namely the typical dual stick shooter layout with Pro Controller, fluid motion controls like Prime Trilogy with Wii Remote + Nunchuk and mixture of both like Splatoon with the Gamepad.

But you don't have to wave your arms around. Just like a mouse, it's mostly wrist movement. It makes a lot more sense that using a small resistive joystick to control a cursor on a square screen. Sometimes you just had to move from something you are used to, to move with the improvement of technology.

Considering it controls like every T/FPS ever when you turn off the stupid motion controls, I don't see why not follow what's more or less been the standard for over 15 years.

Agreed. I'd love to have a new portable Metroid.
