Topic: Should I purchase the Wii U?

Posts 1 to 20 of 42

I was at Best Buy having a blast playing the demo of SSB4 and MK8. I have a PS4 and Xbox One,hopefully I can add the Wii U, but it really depends because I read that Nintendo is planing to make a successor console since Wii U is dying in sales. I don't wanna regret getting it,so I just need to know if I should purchase it. So far I'm interested in; Baynetta 2,SSB4,MK8,soon to come Pokkén Tournament and obviously Zelda/Mario games. I looked at the list of games coming out this year for the Wii U and didn't see many titles that suprised me, is there more games to reveal?

The future of the Wii U is not entirely certain but Iwata has essentially said they don't plan on replacing it anytime soon.

At least in the near future, I would look at the current lineup of games (including some that really went under the radar (both original games and ports), and ask yourself: Do you want a Nintendo and Indie machine? Because it is a very good Nintendo and Indie machine.

Mario Kart and especially Smash Bros kinda live or die based on the availability of local coop friends or family.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

The successor will come in 2018, because it's very likely Wii u will live 6 years. If you find a cheap pack with a game you want, why not?

@Anitec90, just so you know, the games coming out this year (as far as we know):

Kirby & the Rainbow Curse (FEB 2015) - A 2D Kirby platform game, featuring claymation style graphics, and a control method where you direct Kirby by drawing on the Gamepad screen.

Mario Party 10 (March 2015) - As the name suggests, it's yet another entry in Nintendo's popular party game series.

Splatoon (May 2015) - Nintendo's first foray into the Third Person Shooter genré. It has a heavy emphasis on online multiplayer (though there's also a singleplayer mode), and seems to feature that unique Nintendo vibe.

Yoshi's Wooly World (First Half 2015) - Rumored to be an April release (though this hasn't been confirmed), this is a 2D platform game that looks set to be similar to the iconic Yoshi's Island, though with a unique yarn art-style & gameplay quirks.

Mario Maker (2015) - A game where you'll be able to craft your very own 2D Mario levels. You'll be able to choose between SMB, SMB3, SMW, & NSMBU art styles (and possibly more).

Devil's Third (2015) - This is a mature First Person Shooter/Action hybrid game brought to you by the guy behind Dead or Alive & Ninja Gaiden. Originally under THQ, Nintendo saved the project (and secured it exclusive) after THQ went bankrupt.

Xenoblade Chronicles X (2015) - A large scale sci-fi JRPG, that's a follow up to the critically acclaimed Xenoblade Chronicles, which released on the Wii. It promises a very large scale world to explore.

The Legend of Zelda (2015) - Speculated (but not confirmed) to be Nintendo's November release, I believe this needs no introduction (since you already mentioned it).

Star Fox (2015) - A new entry in Nintendo's iconic sci-fi series. Not much is known about it now, except that they revealed they'd like to have it out before Zelda releases.

Project Giant Robot & Project Guard (2015) - These looked to be tech demos showcased at last E3, but Nintendo declaired that they'd each be developed into full scale games to be released this year.

Other possible candidates:

Pokkén Tournament - A Pokémon themed fighting game (based on Tekken) that released in Japanese arcades last year. There has been no word of a Wii U release, but it seems likely.

Fatal Frame 5 - A mature horror game released in Japan last year exclusively for Wii U. There has not been word on a western release, though apparently the developer of Devil's Third seemed to imply it might just make it.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

FWIW, since the launch of MK8, there is no statistical evidence that the Wii U is dying in sales. However, it will never reach the hardware volumes of the 3rd-party supported x86 consoles, that's pretty clear.

In terms of AAA 3rd party support, there is not much to count on at the moment, and frankly I don't think Nintendo care that much. The attachment rate for many of the first party Wii U titles are insane, and the Wii U is now started to get profitable. Nintendo and the indie studios will continue to support the WIi U. Replacing the console with another would not solve anything in terms of customer and 3rd party relations, and developing new consoles takes time. The October 2014 Q&A at the investor meeting made it clear that they have a long-term strategy with the Wii U. Perhaps they will clarify it even more on February 17. Or not.

Regarding the existing games, I saw Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Pikmin 3, Hyrule Warriors, Wonderful 101, Lego City:Undercover and Tropical Freeze were missing from the games you mentioned above. All these are must-haves IMO.

The Nintendo-produced Wii U titles known for this year are: Devil's Third, Mario Party 10, Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars, Project Giant Robot, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Zelda U, Star Fox U, Project Guard, Art Academy, Yoshi's Woolly World, Mario Maker, Splatoon

There are some hints on other future games (Metroid, Animal Crossing, another title from Platinum, etc) but nothing announced. I think you need to wait until E3 for more game announcements.

In terms of supported titles, you can also play the old Wii games in Wii mode.

I'll let you decide if you should buy or not.

Let me tell you something: Ive been a console gamer for more than 20 years now, and there is only one system ive ever dreaded to have purchased: The PS4.
Never have i bought a system with such a disappointing, boring and bland library such as this. Grossly overpriced hardware, software and peripherals included.

Also, let me tell you about a system, i purchased day one and never regretted it one tiny bit: The WiiU.
So, why is that, since most people seem to whine about it so much.
Thats rather easy:
At the moment, it has one of the strongest game libraries of the current systems going for it. Especially the 1st party line up consists of phenomenal titles.
As a Wii owner, i didnt have to buy any peripherals what so ever and was still decked out on controllers for, say, 8 player Smash, since the system is compatible with everything. Only thing missing would be a toaster port.
Its games, compared to the copetition, are "dirt cheap".
For example, PS4 games usually cost around 80-100€ around here (not counting DLC), while the average WiiU games goes for 40-50€. Thats pretty much half the price.

And i could go on listing arbitrary reasons why the system has the most run time out of my entire collectoin.
And with games like Zelda and Xenoblade on the horizon, this playcound will only rise by hundrets of hours.

Mario Kart is a game that's better online than locally IMO.

The WiiU does a good back catalogue already, even if it small. There's definitly enough content there to justify the purchase.

@Einherjar I love my PS4. Also, about the prices, the games are quite cheaper if you wait a few months and buy online, while Nintendo games never get cheaper.

Besides, the Wii U Premium (with mediocre Nintendo Land game) launched for €350.. The Wii U price dropped because it failed at that asking price.

It's worth getting a Wii U just for Pikmin 3 alone. If you enjoy playing games, buying a Wii U is a no brainer

And Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, and the new Zelda. I'm still missing a real 3D Mario like Super Mario 64 or Sunshine, though.

I, like you, thread creator, waited until I got my Wii U. There were a variety of reasons, many of which have been addressed here and in other threads. Basically, I was worried it would be a waste of time and money.

I have never played a console more since the days of GameCube. I've had my Wii U for 6 months and I recently purchased my 9th game for the system. I am extremely satisfied with the console, and the games are all top-notch. With the plethora of fantastic games coming this year, I think getting one is a no-brainer, however, we are all different and you should maybe look at some video reviews or Let's Plays so you can see some of the gameplay in action.

I can tell you that the system is worth it for Bayonetta alone, never mind Mario Kart 8. I don't own a game that I regret buying.

Even if Zelda at the end of 2015 was the last big budget exclusive for the Wii U, it's pretty much already worth buying assuming you can find it for a good price. So many good games! They've obviously had serious problems with their business model and strategy but Nintendo are really still at the top of their game when it comes to fundamental game design (and their ability to inspire that same excellence in their 2nd parties)

Good choice. I bought my Wii U at launch (have never bought a Xbone or PS4) and haven't regretted it since.

I don't have either XBO or PS4 and I have absolutely zero interest in either.

I have a number of beefs with Nintendo and predicted that this machine would be a miserable failure, which it is if we're all honest. I never expected to buy one and was looking at the PS4...and then bought one on a whim anyway because I wanted to play NES remix. I fully expected to not have a good experience with the console but I have been very pleased with it, principally because Nintendo as a game developer seems to be going through a red hot purple patch. I still think about getting a PS4 because there are a lot of games on there that interest me but I don't have the time to play the Wii U games I already own so there doesn't seem much point in buying more.

Both systems are ok but not many titles that'll make me play for hours,I can see myself playing the Wii U for hours-a-day.
