Coming from an HD Warriors interview with Shin'en's Manfred Linzner...

On Wii U having enough power for years to come

‘We only know you need to treat the Wii U differently then those consoles because of a very different and in our view more accessible architecture. There is a lot power to unleash in the Wii U. Enough power for many years to come, at least from our point of view.

‘We know many people see us as Wii U experts. That is because we got a lot of technical praise for Nano Assault Neo but it’s not well deserved. Only very tiny bits of Nano Assault Neo took advantage of the Wii U architecture. We had the game from start in 720p at 60fps. We drew the complete game world twice for TV and GamePad. We had tons of overlays, special effects and even camera streaming and still had no GPU or CPU problems. So we simply had no reason to dig deep into the architecture. We didn’t expected to be seen as the spearhead of Wii U graphics as it undeserved, when looking at what the Wii U can truly achieve.‘

So Nano Assault Neo was just a warm up. I'm excited to see ther next project.

These guys know their stuff. They were one of the first groups to speak highly about the Wii U, and even made mention of some of the hardware and how they used them effectively, rather than going off on being negative because it isn't mind-blowing hardware like so many companies have touted now. Makes me wonder what they have in store for us in the next couple of years.

I really like these guys!

I say Nintendo should collaborate with Shin'en Multimedia on a new Star Fox!

Its probably enough for a developer who only developers for Nintendo systems and has the luxury to optimize everything for the system. However for a lot of the bigger developers I can see Wii U being weaker and not being X86 a reason for them not to take the time out to port their games.

Looking forward to the next game by thee guys. I hope its a sequel to FAST.

I was surprised what I could get out of a 512mb 9800GT and 2.5Ghz dual core in my PC before upgrading.
Metro 2033 on high settings, 30fps for the most part.

Depending on how demanding the WiiU's operating system is, they can potentially get a lot out of it.
Obviously it won't top the other 8th gen consoles, but I don't think it'll be as behind as many assume.

The nice thing about dedicated gaming hardware is that it doesn't really have to deal with the same overhead that a desktop platform would. If you built a computer with similar specs to the Xbox 360, it would probably choke and gag. I'm not terribly worried about the Wii U not being able to have real nice looking games vs. the Xbone and PS4. I think where we need to be concerned is architecture/internals differences that might make developing a port to inconvenient to bother with. Some of the hottest games are multiplatform now and it'd be unfortunate for Nintendo to get left in the wind again.

Where's the KABOOM?! There was supposed to be an earth-shattering KABOOM! sigh delays...delays...

Quite true. Though I hear Linux is much less demanding on the system and games (that support it) run incredibly well on it.

I had a thought some years ago, towards the end on the PS2's life span. At the time I thought graphics were good enough and the industry should focus on innovating gameplay.
It'll probably never happen, but I can always hope.

The point about consoles being more efficient is more true of the CPU than the GPU. There's a lot of extra stuff running on a desktop that slow a CPU down even if it's something as simple as looking to see if there's an updated antivirus. Skype or music running in the background. The obvious point to make is that with PC gaming the CPU isn't really the big bottleneck.

So it's probably fairer to ignore the overheads, because they are almost not there anymore, and compare GPU to GPU. Then the only difference is the fact that console developers develop specifically for that particular GPU. Everything is optimised for that exact hardware. So that's probably another bit of performance they get out of it.

I'm part of the PC master race, I love me some PCs and stuff, but consoles have hardware-level access. Nothing like DirectX to get in the way and slow stuff down. Say the PS4 has a (pure speculation) 7850 GPU, it'll run games better than a PC with a 7850 and equivalent CPU because it doesn't have to go through all the bullcrap APIs and stuff.

Lots of censorship here...

Needed an 8800GT and 2.4 Ghz duo core to get the same performance(framerate) as a Xbox360. Although the 8800GT did allow for much better textures.

Optimization helps a lot, but most multiplatform games won't have good optimization so it'll still be the weaker system, no matter how you spin it. We'll see amazing graphics by the end of the Wii U's lifecycle but the XboxOne/PS4's graphics will have advanced as well, so regardless I think the Wii U will be trailing behind the whole generation.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

It doesn't help everyone had more experience with HD than Nintendo so the results show as much. I think having very colorful game worlds do help Nintendo's image as they don't look that bad.

I don't think anybody is going to dispute that the WiiU is be the weakest platform.
Just that a lot can be squeezed out of the hardware to make some really nice looking games for it.
