I'm not able to find this information anywhere, sorry if it's been answered before.
Anyway, can I use a single SD card to house both Wii U native downloads, and Wii downloads for use in Wii mode, or do I need a separate SD card for each?

You can't use an SD card for Wii U downloads. If you want more storage for Wii U games, you're going to have to get a USB hard driver and pluggerin. The Sd card slot is pretty much there for Wii downloads.
I'm pretty okay.

The SD card slot is not available to anything Wii U related atm. It's there to facilitate what the Wii needs. To have external storage for Wii U purposes, you'll need either an external USB HDD (which is preferred) or an SD card + USB SD card adapter. But, once you "format" one of these for Wii U, it cannot be used for anything else until it is re-formatted.
